The theme of this blog is choked. Follow closely. Bratislava was to be our hero. And at first glance it was. Free parking in front of the Hostel. A good, clean hostel. Free internet. Cheap beer (a buck sixty for a half litre). Slovakian girls. Our first night we head into old town in search of these infamous Slovak clubs. We ran into some girls who said they were headin to Charlies Club. We had been forewarned by another Canadian, Jamie, that Charlies was a locals bar and they do not take too kindly to tourists. This was quickly proven when we had to pay 3 times that of locals - a whoping 12 dollar cover! CHOKED. Upon entering the club, we checked our sweaters, but were not allowed to put both onto one hanger and ... read more

10th October - 12th October.......... Bratislava........ I arrived back in the Land of Oz yesterday but let's you and I pretend I'm still over there having a good time! Don't forget you can click on a photo to enlarge it. It was an easy ride out of Vienna and before I knew it, I was cycling towards the derelict Austrian-Slovakian border crossing. It was so unused looking I didn't even notice the officer in a booth and had to go back when he called out to me. I'm glad they don't shoot and ask questions later any more. The guide book warns to appreciate the last town in Austria because things were about to change. Being on a bike and changing from one country to another highlights the saying "Oh, but for the Grace of God, ... read more

We needed to leave Vienna relatively early in the morning (for us anyway) in order to get to Bratislava as we were only going to be there for the day. We were to spend the night in Budapest. The train trip to Bratislava only lasted an hour. The border person that got on to check our passports gave them a quick once over and didnt even bother to stamp them as we crossed the border into Slovakia. The Bratislava station is not very grand at all, in fact it is probably the most modest central station we have seen so far. Rather than having lockers it simply has a left luggage desk where you have to check your bags in with an attendant. We did this and found the tram which would take us to the ... read more

The next morning we tossed up going to the Sziget Festival again, but making a short trip to Bratislava won out. Bratislava was a huge suprise to both of us. After getting lost on the way from the hostel to the Historic Centre, we were a little dejected until we accidently stumbled into one of the most beautiful old city´s we have ever been to. I was so impressed that I nicknamed it "fairy land" immediately. We made the trek to the top of the hill to see Bratislava Castle, which had a great view of the old town and to the other side of the river where the huge communist remanents of apartment buildings provided a stark contrast to the beauty of the old city. We discovered that nightime was when the beautiful people came ... read more

Currently I am sitting at a hostel in Vienna which is surprisingly very nice and clean. But, before arriving in Vienna myself and 5 of my comrades ventured slightly east to the city of Bratislava in Slovakia. The 5 hour train ride from Prague to Bratislava was priceless. Just sitting back and enjoying the extensive green countryside and small cottage villages over a beer with 5 friends was a memorable time. When we arrived in the city it did seem a little less sanitary than we have been experiencing in Prague but we soon found that it was just a less desirable area of town. When we arrived at our Hostel (btw this city is where the recent horror movie Hostel took place, kinda intense) we immediately checked in and hustled downtown since we were only ... read more

On our way between Budapest and Vienna, we stopped for a night in Bratislava, Slovakia. Bratislava was not necessarily at the top of our list of must-see destinations, but we figured since it was so convenient (on the way from Budapest and only an hour from Vienna), we’d stop and take a look around. We had read in the guidebook that outside of the small old town area the city was kind of grim, and we were kind of bracing ourselves for an unpleasant trip from the train station to the hostel. It wasn't really at all like we were led to believe, and some of the neighborhoods we walked around in were very pleasant and nice. We got on the bus at the train station to go to our hostel, but hadn't realized that ... read more
