Tuesday February 27. Left Komano and followed the north bank of the Danube for about 50 kms before crossing the river at a Hungarian town with a very striking castle on a hill overlooking the river. Unfortunnately I didn't write down the name in my jounal. I must look it up. It is a sad fact that one day does so often merge into the next. I followed the bend of the Danube until I reached the suburbs and the traffic. The speed and aggression were unnerving. I saw a terrible accident with a red family car reduced to the size of a domestic fridge (see photograph) underneath a rather small lorry. I stayed the next two nights at the Papillon Hotel on the Buda side of the city, a very nice hotel on a steep ... read more

Sunday February 25 The train was supposed to arrive at 07.30 but was very late in arriving at 09.40. I cycled through the city to the Radweg on the western bank of the Danube. Here the river consists of three very separate channels each very large. One of the channels is a flood control measure and the main river is divided by a long island. Each time the Radweg came to and end I had to cycle back north to find a bridge to cross to the opposite bank to find a way south. This happened three times and cost me some heartache. I eventually got on to the northern road to Bratislava. The road sign said Wien 30 kms and I had done 66 kms. The wind was bitterly cold and from the south ... read more

The Austrian Train system (called OBB) has a deal going through the month of March, were students can by train tickets to travel on Saturdays. You can go anywhere in the country all day long for only 11 euro. This is a great deal, and we more than utilized our 11 euro, as we were on almost 10 different trains on Saturday! While Austria is very beautiful, it also is part of the dark history along with Germany during the Second World War, as it was a part of Hitlers government. In the town of Mauthausen, in Upper Austria near Linz, the concentration camp was built in order to imprison not only Jewish communities, but also people who went against governments rule. Many people from Mauthausen came from Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and areas in Austria. More ... read more

Sunday March 4, 2007 - After a very sombering experience at Mauthausen, I decided it would be good to do something more upbeat and fun. On the train ride home from Mauthausen Tyler and I decided we would find a train to Bratislava that night. I knew absolutely nothing about Bratislava so I first had to ask him what country it was in. Of course it is the capitol of Slovokia. So after we got off the trian from Mauthausen, we came back to the dorms and grabbed some stuff to take for the night. We made our trian and were awoken about 1 hour and 15 minutes into the trip by Slovokian soldiers checking our passports. It was an interesting thing to wake up to. We did not arrive in Bratislava until about 1:45am and ... read more

We arrived in Bratislava on an overnight train which arrived at 5am. Needless to say we were exhausted (European overnight trains don't offer the most comfortable sleeping conditions!), so we were slightly unimpressed that we couldn't check into our hostel until 1pm. However, we shook ourselves awake and headed into the City to see what we could find and actually managed to see most of the sites before lunchtime! The Old Town consists of smart, winding cobbled streets, lined with shops and cafes (none of which opened until 8am- grrr). There are some amazing buildings with decorated roofs and numerous squares with fountains. The castle is set up on a hill next to the river Danube. It is a fairly new looking building, having been renovated by the Communists, and the castle gardens offer quite memorable ... read more

The morning of the 6th Suzy and I ventured out to go to visit Vienna's neighboring city Bratislava, Slovakia. We had decided that it would be the perfect day trip based on it close proximity to Vienna, 45 minutes, as well as short train ride. Upon arrival at what seemed to be a completely empty and abandoned train station we were a bit dumbfounded, not being able to open any of the doors into the station. We sat and pondered and watched the group of Spaniards pull everyone of the door handles to know avail, but soon enough we saw a tiny arrow pointing to the left/end of the building and entered the train customs area. After a couple quick glances and two stamp thuds we were through the gates and into the main station, now ... read more

With scary beggars and shifty looking guys. And i'm loving it! Ok so maybe the whole of Bratislava is not like this, but the train station definitely is. Really feel travelly now, because it's really eastern europe, which is what i was looking for in this trip. gotta go get sorted for going out for the bells. c yaz xxx... read more

Being sick sucks. We had a single full day here, which i spent in bed. I ventured out once at night to get food, it was quite scary. Speedy and Captain CB tell me the locals here are nice, real nice. The next morning, New Years eve, we boarded a train to Prague to party. I was reminded why I like train journeys so much as we glided peacefully through the snowtouched countryside to our destination.... read more
