Sylvia and I are a recently married couple and enjoy traveling, skiing, and seeing new places. We blog about our travels and enjoy sharing our experiences with family, friends, and anyone else who might be interested to read about the places we visit. We enjoy questions, comments, and messages.

After traveling to Ludwigsburg to visit some of our friends, Sylvia and I drove back toward the Czech Republic to stay with some of my relatives. On our drive back, we were finally able to stop at one of the places in Germany I have always wanted to see, Berchtesgaden with its Obersalzburg retreat area that is the location of the Kehlsteinhaus more commonly known by Americans as Hitler's "Eagles Nest." Obersalzburg is located high up in the Bavarian Alps very near the Austrian border. We actually had to cross the Austrian border for about 5km. Since Austria requires a special permit to drive on its main highways, the Austrian police were scamming unwitting Germans in this short 5km area and checking for these permits and handing out fines! Luckily, Sylvia and I had purchased on

We traveled with a group of Slovak and Hungarian Catholics from the Roznava diocese where we lived on a Catholic sightseeing tour to many of the famous Catholic pilgrimage sights in Italy. We left in the middle of the afternoon after meeting the bus in downtown Roznava. While we knew the local priest who was leading the group, we did not know any of the other people on the bus. Also, we found that we were also younger than the rest of the tour group by an average of about 40 years. Nevertheless, we were excited to be on our first guided tour and take a break from

We nearly gave up on trying to obtain visas, but after three truly unpleasant encounters with the Russian embassy in Bratislava (including paying double for expedited visas), we finally were set for our trip. We flew from Kosice through Prague to Moscow and Kelly met us at the airport. We travelled to their house which is inside the American, British, and Canadian housing compound in Moscow and really a nice place. We were a bit worried about this trip because of the recent metro bombings in Moscow, but decided to travel anyway. The bombings occurred two weeks before our trip on the day we got our

We first flew to London and immediately took a Eurostar train through the Chunnel to Paris for two days. We spent our first day seeing some of the typical Paris sights. We attended Mass at Notre Dame cathedral before visiting the Paris Catacombs (Sylvia's least favorite part) as well as the Sorbonne, the Arc de Triomphe, and of course, the Eiffel Tower. I have been pleasantly surprised in the past in many countries when my preconceived notions of that country's culture have been proven false. This was largely not the case with France. We searched for half an hour before we found a store or restaurant that would give us change for the subway. We were invited into

Sylvia and I came to Slovakia this year knowing that we would get married here on the 2nd of January, 2010. For this reason, we had already started making plans in the United States and once we arrived in June, Sylvia got to work putting the plans into action. We first had to navigate a maze of legal paperwork. We had to establish my residency in Slovakia to make my situation legal, and then obtain certified copies of my necessary documents from the United States. Can I just say that I am tired of European police? Second, we had to satisfy the Catholic Church with documents so that we could get married in the

Christmas traditions begin a little earlier in Slovakia (and Eastern Europe) than in the United States. This is due mainly to the celebration of St. Nicholas Day on the 6th of December. Of course, the legends upon which Santa Claus is based are derived from the stories attributed to St. Nicholas. Children leave their shoes near a window and the next morning, they are filled with candy, nuts, and fruits, as well as chocolate representations of Nicholas or Santa Claus in modern times. Winter sports are very popular in Slovakia and early in December, the outdoor skating rink is opened to skating and hockey practices can begin.

A few kilometers outside of town is the village of Brzotin, which has a population of a few hundred and a large percentage of Roma (gypsies). I struggle with the use of these kinds of terms (gypsies versus Roma, etc) because they all carry various political meanings. I have found that in academics, one must be rather careful with the use of such terms since they can be considered inappropriate or offensive in certain contexts. So with this said, I will continue with the term "gypsy" because of its familiarity, although "Roma" is perhaps a more precise word. My Slovak language teacher taught Slovak and Russian at the school in Brzotin many years ago before it was designated as

My cousin Hana lives in Moravske Budejovice, a city in the Southern Moravia region of the Czech Republic. Sylvia's best friend Janka and her husband Fred live north of Stuttgart (the home of Porsche and Mercedes cars) in a city called Ludwigsburg. Our first stop on the trip was to visit my relatives in Moravia. This region is from where many of my relatives on both my father and mothers' sides of the family emigrated. My dad's family came from near Brno while my mother's family came from farther west, near where my cousin Hana lives today. Last summer, Sylvia and I visited Hana and I was able to take her to several

Throughout the entire weekend, Slovak families travel across the country to visit cemeteries where their deceased family members are located. Cemeteries overflow with flowers and thousands and thousands of candles are lit and placed on the graves. Families take time to meet together and take care of their family members' gravesites. Because some families must travel to multiple cemeteries across large areas of Slovakia, this begins taking place on Friday and doesn't end until late Sunday night, when the actual observance of All Saints takes place. Virtually all Slovaks travel to their local cemetery late on Sunday night to pay respects and light candles. Additionally, war memorials that commemorate the World Wars are highly decorated. Although the practice

I convinced Sylvia that Egypt would be very interesting, since the pyramids were something I had always wanted to see. We booked a trip to stay at a resort along the Red Sea near Hurghada and flew from Kosice on a chartered flight with nothing but Slovak vacation-goers. We arrived at the airport in Hurghada and then took a bus the 40km to our resort, which was really more like a compound. Since such resorts are basically in the middle of the desert, they must function on an 'all-inclusive' program, since there are no restaurants or civilization to go to for food. I was warned not to drink the water except from
