Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986. To be updated

we got to porto on the night and managed to make our way to la ribera. we got there and we got ready to go out but found that everywhere was closed for fuck sake! we got back and taylor started to cook. we made friends with 2 old women who insisted trying to talk to us in Portuguese thinking we would understand. as usual every1 relied on me to talk! they told us the police would end up causing a fuss with us parked where we were parked because the whole area was a public transport area for taxi's, busses [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! Iºm writing this entry as we´re checking out of our hostel in lisbon. we arrived here yesterday night on the overnight train from madrid and hit the ground running. we checked into our hostel and explored the area for the whole day. the best sight was from the top of the castle where you could see some pretty awesome views of the whole city. we had some pretty traditional português food for lunch and indian food for dinner. they all were really good! today we might go to the beach and then weºre headed back to madrid on the [View Full Entry]

Lagos…whew!....What a wacky crazy week! I must admit I wasn’t planning to go to Portugal but when every second person you meet is saying.. go to Lagos!... go to Lagos… its hard to ignore. So long story short ‘I went’ and it was loads of fun. Since being there I reckon I’ve told another 20 people to go and about half already have. Basically Lagos is the poor’s man’s Ibiza. It’s a massive party town down in the Algarve in the south of Portugal located right on a beautiful beach. Unfortunately however, the tourist population is a [View Full Entry]

...end of May... Porto Dav and I managed to grab a lift down to Portugal with Ben and Lauren as they had hired a car and were picking Lauren’s parents up from the airport in Porto. Their plan was to check out some of Portugal with Lauren’s folks, and then head back up to Santiago at the end of the month in preparation for their wedding in early June. So, after saying goodbye to Ben and Lauren at the airport while they waited for the flight to land, Dav and I caught a bus into Porto. There we went to [View Full Entry]

Due to the keyboard in France being quite different then what I am used to, I will not be writing much! Here are our highlights from the last few weeks: Seville, Spain - biggest Catholic Church in the world, famous bullfighting ring, and a Flamenco dancer with the body of an NFL linebacker! Lagos, Portugal - Nice beaches and lots of partiers, pour hour (a meal and all you can drink within an hour) for less than 10 Euros! Day trip to Sagres for some surfing in cold water! Lisbon, Portugal - Skinny alleys that turned into night time drinking spots, [View Full Entry]

Porto Fortunately, my departure to Portugal was less eventful than that of mine to Mallorca. It was perhaps unfortunate, however, that my departure would have to begin at 02:45. Not realizing the hours of the first tube departures in the morning, and thinking only of the cheap airfare, I booked without consideration of the logistics at hand to actually get to the airport for a 6:30 flight to Porto. As it turns out, this may have been fortuitous, as had it been any later, I would have had to count on the tube, rather than having to figure out which bus [View Full Entry]

A visita à Rota do Românico
A visita à Rota do Românico
