Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986. To be updated

Porto Fortunately, my departure to Portugal was less eventful than that of mine to Mallorca. It was perhaps unfortunate, however, that my departure would have to begin at 02:45. Not realizing the hours of the first tube departures in the morning, and thinking only of the cheap airfare, I booked without consideration of the logistics at hand to actually get to the airport for a 6:30 flight to Porto. As it turns out, this may have been fortuitous, as had it been any later, I would have had to count on the tube, rather than having to figure out which bus [View Full Entry]

Portugal. Oporto As the name suggests, Porto has a lot to do with Port. In fact this is where the first Port was created and the wineries line the Douro River that runs through the city. The second biggest city after Lisbon Porto is mountain goat territory and dates back to the 5th century. There are extremely steep hills and valleys throughout the city and you think twice about heading out to the shops and double check once down there that you’ve not forgotten anything as the steep climb back up to the hostel is devastating on the legs. There is [View Full Entry]

We travelled to the south coast of Portugal on the 5th of june. Spend 5 hours in a bumpy, local train with no options for buying food/water, got us feeling pretty sick midway there. Live and learn kids, which has become our motto when somethings goes wrong(even though everything more or less has been going smooth so far!). Got to Lagos late a night and were in no mood for socializing. Therefore it sucked even more that we couldn´t find the hostel that we booked. Tired and hungry we finally found a sweet, old man who let us sleep in his [View Full Entry]

So we made it! Finally, we are currently backpacking Europe and we start of in Lisbon, Portugal. Our travel down here went smooth and we found the "Home" Hostel pretty easily in the center of the old part of lisbon. We took a little walk around in the neighborhood and tried some local wine. Nice to be sitting outside at a street cafe sipping wine (and this time it was actually pleasent being outside, Carol!). Next morning we started touring around Lisbon on our feet. We walking up to the Sao Jorge Castle thats build on one of the hilltops. It [View Full Entry]

I don’t know if I have a severe writers block, or if its because I haven’t had very much time to myself the last couple of weeks, but my blog is lacking. I’m sorry. I will try to revive it and remember what has gone on in the last couple weeks. Primero, the weekend before last, was my very own first road trip across Europe. It sounds grand, and I am pretty ecstatic about it, but what really happened was that my friend Megan (who came to stay for a couple weeks to learn the ropes of traveling Europe) and [View Full Entry]

This weekend my friends and I went to Lagos, Portugal. It was about a five hour bus ride from Seville. Me and seven other friends left Friday afternoon for our weekend getaway! We got to Lagos around 8 pm, checked into our hostel and went out for dinner. It was my first European hostel experience and it was awesome! Since there was eight of us, we actually got our own apartment with six beds (we had to share) and a bathroom to ourselves and a full kitchen for less than 20 euros a night! Mama (the owner of the hostel) even [View Full Entry]
