Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986. To be updated

My journey to Porto didn’t exactly get off to a smooth start. I knew I had to catch a train to Coimbra B railway station but wasn’t sure which train to catch. I couldn’t see the train status screen. The bane of the blindy on the road. There were two trains waiting to leave so I had to make a choice. Naturally I made the wrong choice on the advice of a guy waiting on the platform. Got on the train which was totally empty. I waited a minute or two and still no other passengers. I saw people walking toward [View Full Entry]

Portugal

So it was time for another easyjet flight, although this time we didn't have to go through stansted. We flew from Madrid to Lisbon and were suprised that we had to change our clocks when we landed. The heat continued, we picked up our rental car and only realised it had airconditioning 2 hours into our trip to porto and after acquiring a 50 euro fine for Greg failing to pick up the toll ticket when we left lisbon (give me a break I was still adapting to driving on the wrong side of the road). Still it was awesome to [View Full Entry]

SunsetFinal Day
Well it's good bye to my favorite place in Europe, Ericeira. What makes this place my favorite well it's the surf, sun and most of all the people. Northern Portugal is fortunately for the locals but unfortunately for the economy a little forgotten gem in Europe. It has some of the best coast line, few tourists (or at least less) and generally has only the committed tourists rather than the package types. Debs checked into surf school in Ribeira d'llhas.. "that was headquarters . they want me to go to las vegas and make contact with a portugesse photographer named laserta, he has all the details. all i do, is check into my sound proof suite, he'll seek me out." - raoul duke im in lagos portugal, we lost some crew along the way to other obligations so were in search of new blood. so far our search has borne no fruit, but i remain optimistic. the weather is also proving uncoopritive, making for a unpleastant ride from here to lisbon. ill have more details on that when we get there. Lisbon
After a stressful arrival into Lisbon trying to find a caravan park and our brakes getting very soft we spent a relaxing afternoon before heading into Lisbon the next day. Lisbon was a different city to Porto having lost many of its old buildings in a big earthquake, tidal wave and fire in the 1700s. Here we exhausted ourselves wandering around tiny streets and up steep hills, visiting the Castle and the cute Alfama district. Had a few well-earned cerveja that night before indulging in a night of Fado music, wine and more seafood. Next day included trips on funiculars and [View Full Entry]

This was written on a roadsign and it just might be correct for me, as I had a great experience of life there. Lady Luck was on my side when I was looking for a place to stay in the north. Magic internet helped me find Vitor and his family. I guess almost by accident as I almost never use the site I used. They made me feel wellcome, despite my poor poruguese speaking skills and spoiled me to the limits with the great food of the lady of the hous (mum) and by being drivene absolutely everywhere you can imagine!
