Saturday 27th January We have been to Madeira many times before, this cruise we don’t plan on doing too much galavanting so after a stroll around the sun deck we took a panoramic tour around Funchal, just a couple of photo shoot stops. The guide was very informative, a lot we already knew but did learn a few things new. One of the stops we have been to so many times I think we should get loyalty points for visiting, but the view over Funchal is great and so too the swan neck Agave (Agave attenuata). Some of the passengers stayed in Funchal, but we returned to the ship and enjoyed an alfresco lunch back on board. A lovely sunny day and everyone was feeling upbeat now that we had finally reached our first destination. Saga ... read more

Thursday 25th January Our location is off the coast of Portugal The seas were quite calm last night & this morning when we opened the curtains we saw a beautiful sunrise, after all the grey days and high winds the calm sea and sunshine were a delightful start to the day. We enjoyed breakfast in the grill and then took a stroll around the deck, it was a bit breezy but still enjoyable. Many of the chairs on the deck were still tied down but were released as the day progressed and some even venture around the pool We still have a fair way to go but the estimated arrival into Funchal is Friday around 8pm. I think everyone will be glad that we finally will be able to walk on land again. Tonight being Burns ... read more

Travelling days are always long and tedious adventures. Finding the right check in for the luggage, then the right boarding gate which is usually 40 miles away. Landing in Lisbon and after collecting our luggage, we are required to walk from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 to find the check in for Faro. Then it‘s finding the boarding gate which in this case is an even bigger challenge. We know the area but not the gate number and it doesn’t come up on the board until it’s time to board. But got there successfully - then hurry up and wait! We have met some really nice people. In Toronto desperate for a beer we scanned the seating area for a table - none to be had. A couple offered to share their table and we soon ... read more

Friday 26th January A beautiful sunny day as we get closer to Madeira. The Grill is our favourite place for breakfast, lovely and light and airy with ceiling to floor windows looking across the sea. Yesterday we spotted a couple of dolphin fins but no luck today. In the evening the Grill has the same menu as the Grand Dining room, with table cloths added & flowers to coordinate with the pink decor it gives a pleasant ambiance and not as busy as the Grand Dining room. We are Portside so have the sun on our balcony in the morning. It was so nice to just sit and relax and enjoy the sunshine after the past few grey days. Time for an Alfresco lunch today on the Verandah, deck 12, what a difference that sun makes, ... read more

How lucky can a person be? Tomorrow we leave for Portugal to spend a week with Anne’s brother and his wife in the house they have rented for a month. It will be a welcome break from all the rain that has fallen in January (what am I saying? If that had been snow we’d be buried 6 feet deep in it). It has been a dreary winter with very little snow and even less sun. I need some sun (and fun). I anticipate lots of walking in the sun. There are so many things to experience and see in Portugal. I love the old cities of Europe and each one has an ancient medieval village centre to be explored. The worn stone buildings and cobblestone streets have been beautifully and lovingly preserved. I can picture ... read more

A recent trip to Paris Baguette, a newish French bakery in downtown Pleasant Hill, yielded a plethora of pastries and French delicacies. Among my favorites are the mochi donuts and the Pastel de Nata. From Eater Seattle: Pasteis (Pastel) de nata, also known as Portuguese egg tarts, were url=https://theculturetrip.com/europe/portugal/articles/a-brief-introduction-to-pastel-de-nata-portuguese-custard-tartsinvented by monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon hundreds of years ago. At the time, monks and nuns used egg whites to starch their clothes (the past was a strange place), so they had a bunch of yolks lying around. Someone came up with the idea of putting egg custard in a pastry shell, sort of like a miniature pie, which is browned on top and sometimes sweetened with flavors like cinnam... read more

Another warm morning dawned in Lisbon, for what we learned to be the norm since April. Rain days have been in the single digits since summer began, and the terrain we would see on the southern peninsula of Lisbons outskirts certainly showed it. Parched parks and low irrigation ponds; you could say this southern area is in drought. We trundled to the ferry steadily along the main road bike path, trying to avoid for the umpteenth time broken glass. Our cycle alert system, shouting “glass”, with a waving hand somewhere or other, continued. The weekday Lisbon waterfront was less frenetic, and we got there in ample time for the 11.30 departure, buying tickets “with two bikes, Obrigada”. Our mishap began in boarding, faced with a turnstile fit for an average sized person. With no obvious bike ... read more

After flying Brussels Airlines from Kinshasa to London via Brussels, I'm on the next leg, on TAP Portugal with a super early flight first to Lisbon. I've read and heard not very good things about TAP lately. After 4 flights, I can claim I'm lucky with all my bags with me, and no big delays to suffer! The first flight was at 6am in Heathrow. I decide to arrive at 4.15am for the check-in....good point as the security is only opening at 4.30am! The Lufthansa lounge was supposed to open at 5am....but it never opened with a sign for "hygiene reasons"! Well, at least I cannot blame TAP about it. My layover was 24 hours and 50 minutes, so they would not check my bags all the way to the final destination. Flight was smooth in ... read more

“Half the enjoyment is in the planning”. And how fast time went from then to now. We cooked this idea up as a combination of unrealised plans in Spain from 2020, with the opportunity to one day visit Portugal. Adding some new knowledge, and an aspiration to see Portugal more than what a lengthy bike packing weekender from Extramadura or Andalucía could have been (it was a two town based unrealised adventure), and here it is. Lisbon to Barcelona by bike is something that might be seen as adventurous, but, we hope to take it gradually, allowing both body and mind to absorb the journey and maybe several paderia/ panadería on the way. There is something about having another birthday, and one’s health, that meant the time’s now. Night time flights for 17 hours are generally ... read more
