Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986. To be updated

SUNBOY IS HEADING HOME Well after getting the boat tied up and sorted Willem and I headed off to one of the local bars that has wi fi to check emails. The very exciting news we received is that Sunboy is now an official starter in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers 2009, along with 225 other cruising and racing yachts. Wahoooo. Our elation was soon quashed when the technicians told us that Hanse had sent the wrong windows and just as I was about to ring up the factory for a few quiet words, Debs rushed up to tell me that [View Full Entry]

The first official ISA excursion is completed, and I have to admit, it was nice getting out of Sevilla for awhile, and though I’m starting to appreciate the benefits of going to see the sights of a place in an organized mass of people, I still prefer traveling in a smaller group. Two people is best. Day one: After the sleepy bus ride to Portugal, where Connie and I had plenty of time to bond, we arrived at the infuriatingly luxurious hotel (just give me a bed, seriously… I’m not that hard to please and rather cheap…) and Raquel and I [View Full Entry]

Lisbon, Portugal. Europe » Portugal » Lisboa
Ola! Well my friend Rebecca was going to Lisbon with her mother Pat for a weekend as part of her travels before heading back home, so when she asked if I wanted to join her I jumped at the chance. After an early start (getting up at 3am to catch flights is never fun, especially since I am a procrastinator and end up going to bed at midnight as I will find something to do rather than pack my bags!!!) I landed in a very humid Lisbon and was excited for the weekend that promised much- my last taste of summer! [View Full Entry]

Rio Tejo, Ponte 25 de Abril, Christo-Rei.

I arrived in Lagos on Thursday and it's incredible here! It's a small town in the Algarve (the southern part of Portugal) of about 20,000, and it's basically just a beach town with lots of bars and restaurants and tiny winding streets (like all of Portugal!). The beaches are incredible, though. They have these enormous cliffs and make you feel like a tiny little ant when you're up next to them! The last couple of days have been a welcome retreat from the business of traveling, especially after all the walking in Lisbon. I've just been lying on the beach all [View Full Entry]

Leaving behind Lisboa and the broad Tagus River (the same one flowing in smaller form through Toledo) we headed northward. North of Lisboa are rolling hills and small mountains, often forested with pines of various sorts and the overtaking eucalyptus. As is thus far always the case in Spain and Portugal, you are never far from olives trees and vineyards. Our first stop was in Fatima, site of the famous religious shrine (which interestingly was named originally after one of the daughters of Mohammed). On May 13, 1917 three shepherd girls told of seeing a vision of Mary in an oak [View Full Entry]

Lisbon (Oeiras) - Sines - Sagres - Lagos - LATE BREAKING NEWS We tied up in Oeiras Marina, smack bang next to a boat called Solitude, a very large and beautiful looking Hanse 54. Small Nest was a couple of boats away and, as usual, saw a few other boats we had shared marinas with since we struck Portugal, a few of them being British and Northern European Yachts heading south to make the Canary Islands for the start of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers which leaves from Las Palmas on the island of Grand Canarias for the 2800 mile crossing [View Full Entry]

Oeiras Harbour - Lisbon
Lisbon
Sooo good,

So I got into Lisboa (aka Lisbon) on Sunday and its wonderful here! I actually ended up getting a ride with Francisco, the guy Im staying with while in Lisbon, so that was great! Saved me some money, and it was strangely nice to be in a car after having traveled by public transit for the last couple of weeks! We went to Fatima on the way, which is one of the most important religious sites in Europe. Although Im not particurlarly religious (as most of you know) it was still so beautiful there and very calm...they have signs everywhere asking [View Full Entry]

Beautiful Porto Europe » Portugal » Northern » Porto
I've been in Porto for two days now and it's the most wonderful place. The buildings are old and somewhat run down, but it also makes the city ridiculously charming. The entire city is all hills - I am going to have the best calves after climbing up and down the streets the last couple of days! - with the lowest point being the Douro River. Similar to Edinburgh, the most recognizable buildings - the citadel and the castle - are visible from almost any point in the city, so it's relatively easy to orient yourself. The weather has been absolutely [View Full Entry]

Now I know why my spelling in the previous blogs are scewed. I am currently learning how to type on a Portugese keyboard. Previously it was a Spanish keyboard. Lol. We arrived at the Airport and you guessed it, our arranged meeting with our landlord did not happen. He arrived a little later, but thats ok. So, we tried to pull some dinero out of the machine that spits out money and it wouldn,t throw it up. Well I figured it was my debit card but it turns out there is a maximum per day you are allowed and I exceeded [View Full Entry]
