Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986. To be updated

Lisbon is the Real Deal Europe » Portugal » Lisboa
Now I know why my spelling in the previous blogs are scewed. I am currently learning how to type on a Portugese keyboard. Previously it was a Spanish keyboard. Lol. We arrived at the Airport and you guessed it, our arranged meeting with our landlord did not happen. He arrived a little later, but thats ok. So, we tried to pull some dinero out of the machine that spits out money and it wouldn,t throw it up. Well I figured it was my debit card but it turns out there is a maximum per day you are allowed and I exceeded [View Full Entry]

Nazare - Ilha da Berlenga - Lisbon We left Nazare late on the morning of the 13th of September to sail down to the Island of Berlenga, a distance of 20 to 30 odd miles. We dropped our trolling gear over the side, hoping to pick up the odd mackerel. The conditions were incredibly nice for a gentle day sail down to the island and we just enjoyed the casualness of the trip for the first two or three hours. We ended up getting a bit of tide against us and decided that we needed to get to the island with [View Full Entry]

Ericeira Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Ericeira
Drove an hour south to the town of Ericeira, just 40km North of Lisbon. Lots of headlands and cliff faces with right hand point breaks. Checked out the coastline and then went to our accommodation, Beach Tour Ericeira. A really nice two bedroom apartment with pools and ocean glimpses. Spent the next days at the beach (water getting chiily), eating the local produce and drinking local wine and beer. One day we headed into Lisbon and went to the Castle of St. George and their version of Scitech. Indiya and Jarah really enjoyed the Science Centre. On our last day [View Full Entry]

Batalha, Alcobaca and Obidos. We had to catch the bus to the towns of Batalha and then catch a bus back from there to Alcobaca and of course back to Nazare. The Stellermans are brilliant travellers and Haike is very resourceful as far as her research is concerned so all we had to do was basically sit back, relax and be guided as to when and where to be, too easy!!. We caught the bus from the marina into Nazare town, headed to the local markets which open every day from early in the morning to about 1.00pm and where you [View Full Entry]

Coimbra Europe » Portugal » Central » Coimbra
Coimbra: September 14-15 From Salamanca we caught another bus to Portugal, where we were staying in the Portugese university town of Coimbra. Our accommodation had a terrace on the roof that looked out over Coimbra, affording great views of the houses and university that was built into hillside. The streets were hilly in parts but this is the norm in so many towns that I think I will miss my daily treks up and down the steps. As we arrived late in the day we interrupted our orientation walk to have dinner in a cafeteria style restaurants frequented by the students [View Full Entry]

Pavoa de Vazim - Aveiro - Figueiro da Foz - Nazare This blog takes in about 150 miles of the Portuguese Atlantic Coast, incorporating the departure from Pavoa de Vazim heading for Aveiro, Figueiro da Foz and Nazare, all of which we sailed in company with A Small Nest. The reason we did this part of the coast this way was primarily due to the spring tides and the times they are occurring at the moment. Our pilotage books indicated we needed to be able to enter Figueiro da Foz at or just before high tide and to go from Pavoa [View Full Entry]

Peniche Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley
It took three hours to reach the coastal town of Peniche, which is one of Portugal's well known surf destinations. The town is on a huge rocky headland, with a smaller town Baleal on the next rocky headland. The landscape is dry and baron and the houses rather ramshackle. There was an instantaneous good vibe about the place. Lots of places to surf, although Matt still didn't find the waves he was seeking. The best spot was Consolacao, a right hand point break. Some good waves for me and the kids. Spent three days exploring the region, which included Obidos [View Full Entry]

Guarda Europe » Portugal » Central
Guarda 24-25th August We ventured into Portugal on the 24th. It is an hours time difference from Spain, so we arrived at 10pm. We were staying in Guarda, which is 4 hours north-east of Lisbon (capital of Portugal). We went to the Recidencial Pinto to stay. In the morning we checked the old town, which had a cathedral and the leftovers of the wall around the town. The streets were very narrow. We saw an old man making shoes the traditional way. We drove to the Serra De Estrela, which has the highest mountain range in Portugal. For dinner we had [View Full Entry]
