Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986. To be updated

In October 2008 the Porto-Bristol Association had the opportunity to study Roman art and architecture through the "Vale do Sousa", in Northern Portugal. This one day special Itinerary, organised by Doctor Duarte Pinheiro and Anabela Marques, proved a resounding success for the 14 members that went along. A first class tour of some of the beautiful historical monuments / churches in the region, with lots of useful information by our Guide, made the day very interesting. In addition a good lunch was provided in the Quinta de Cedovezas. At the end of the day it was on to see the house [View Full Entry]

Oh dear. So much hilarious stuff to record, so little time. Yesterday I arrived in Lisbon after taking a night bus from Seville. It was a routine drill--the bus was late, packed with people, and Laurn and I were forced to listen to the sounds of an amorous couple in the row behind us. Par for the course. Around 2 am the bus stops in a town called "Davida" or something like that, so that one lonely passenger can disembark. When the driver gets up and comes to the back to call out a "Meester James," I assume that this fellow [View Full Entry]

This poem was written approximately April 12th, 2009, while I spent time with friends in Sesimbra, Portugal Rays of light travel along a cloudy sky, deeply penetrating beams, across the countryside. Passing through the air, striking molecules aplenty, Only to land on my body, and warm me to the core. What a splendid day in Sesimbra, en la praia escondida. Down the slopping hillside, loose rocks underfoot, encountering fields of sea roses, rosemary and lavender. The slow taste the dust, kicked up by enthused youth. An afternoon of activity, followed by fine Portuguese c [View Full Entry]

Only a few more days left on the 'real'part of this trip. (The rest of St. Thomas and Austin ae not traveling in the same way). Ready to come home this time. Started to be a bit tired from traveling at the end of Spain. Castles and churches and museums start to blend into each other. At least need a change of scenary from Europe. I hopped over from Spain on a long bus ride to Oporto. After the lack of people who can speak English for conversations in Spain, I decided to stay in hostels in Oporto and Lisbon. We got into Lisbon on Wednesday, April 22nd, with plans to spend only a couple days. We stayed for four before we could pry ourselves from this city! We met some great people and partied our time away. We were lucky enough to hit it during Portuguese Freedom Day that celebrates the liberation from a facist dictatorship in 1974. The same day is also ANZAC Day! From Lisbon, we moved south to beautiful, windy Sagres on the most southwestern coast. We spent three days beach lazing in this cozy rural setting before our last Portuguese destination, Lagos. Beautiful! [View Full Entry]

I was ecstatic that Portugal was the warmest place of all our port stops. Unfortunately our time at these places was brief so the blog is mostly about the pictures and not so much on profound experiences I've had with this country. Sao Miguel, Azores The island of Sao Miguel was our first port stop and break from crossing the Atlantic. Ponta Delgada was a cute town with black and white mosaic cobblestone streets. I can understand now where the black and white style of the Serenado Square in Macau came from. It was a quick coach bus tour of the [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Lisbon, and it was raining…. It’s an acclimatization stop for us, or so we all believe - from the tropics to the deserts of Egypt and then into the Med and its cold spring weather. On the way in to Lisbon we passed through the straights of Gibraltar and saw snow!!!! on the Spanish mountains. Brrrrrr. The ship "parked" under the singing bridge.... or as it sounds the verrrrry noisy bridge. This is a metal bridge with a high volume of traffic passing on it. We took our time getting of the ship, not the usual hurry - [View Full Entry]

In March 2008 the "Porto-Bristol Association" went dancing along the Yellow Brick Road all the way to the "Casa da Música" in Porto. This was for a rather special Concert, performed by the "Orquestra Nacional do Porto" , who played the music score for the complete Judy Garland film. Afterwards 19 members followed the road to the "Shakesbeer" restaurant, for an enjoyable lunch. In April, the second event for this year was a walk/gathering in the "Parque da Cidade" (Porto), followed by a talk by Maria João Tavares (member of the Association) [View Full Entry]
