Belgium. The Netherlands. Luxembourg. Sometimes shortened to the term Benelux. I have now visited each of them! But, before I get into that, it was actually a surprisingly fun and exciting week. As you all know, Tuesday was St. Patrick’s Day. What you might not know is this is one of my absolute favorite holidays! My obsession with the Irish is shared and celebrated on this one day each year when everyone expresses their love for the Irish! So, of course, I wore green, went to an Irish pub, drank a Guinness and danced the night away. Oh, how I love St. Patrick’s Day. Another exciting point in my week came on Friday when I got to visit the Headquarters for NATO. In addition to most of the European Union institutions, the headquarters for the North ... read more

I can't write a lot, because I'm leaving in about an hour for Italy. I don't have class again until two Mondays from now. Carnival is a huge celebration in Europe for the beginning of Lent. People everywhere derss up in crazy costumes like clowns and jesters and theres lots of parties and parades. I'll be going to Venice, Cinque Terre (a group of five small towns), Florence, and Rome. Two random things about Europe that I have yet to mention...theres dog poop all over the side walks. When I go running I have to be sure to avoid this. One time I even saw someone with their dog letting it poop and then they just left without picking it up. Do they think it decomposses into the cement? Another thought...people here don't care to move ... read more

Today I was just hanging out at home when my host sister, Michelle, came up from the basement with two rabbits. They were so cute and she gave one to me to hold. She told me that she was going to the docter for the bunny to get its teeth cute because they were too long...I don't know if this is normal but I acted like it was. I decided to ask her if she wanted to make cookies with me today and she said yea. They didn't have some of the ingredients so we had to go to the grocery store after she got back with the rabbit. I had trouble finding baking soda because they didn't really know what it is. We spent probably 3 times as long in the store as it should ... read more

Here's a few funny things that happened this week: This week I received a package from my parents : ) There were some yummy chocolate chip cookies in the package that I shared with some people at school...everyone definitely appreciated a treat from home. One kid proclaimed that the cookie "tasted like America". This was pretty funny, but so true! I guess we're all starting to really miss some things about home (like skim milk because they drink 3.5% here). I offered some cookies to my host family and they enjoyed them as well. From their reactions it seems that they've never had a chocolate chip cookie before. This really surprised me, but then I realized that I haven't really seen any cookies since I've been here. The only ones I've seen are in tourist cities ... read more

Life in Luxembourg...there is also so much more to my experience here in Luxembourg besides just my weekend travels. A host family, classes, and public transportation take up my days during the week. In my host family I have a host mom, Claudine, a host sister, Mandy, a host brother, Yannis, and 3 dogs, Serko, Ricca and Saphira and a cat, Dutchess. They all are very welcoming. They have been hosting students for the last 13 years. They take two students every semester and over the summer as well. Claudine and Mandy speak English pretty well and Yannis and Kursh, Claudine's boyfriend, do not speak English as well so we use Mandy mostly to translate for us. Mandy is 19 so it is nice to have someone our age who we can hang out with and ... read more

Well so I thought it would be smart to go to Amsterdam central and catch a train at 3:45 am to Luxemborg. After 2 train changes where I nearly missed the connection because we had to wait at Brussles Nord - right before the station for 45 minutes as there was something wrong with the track, I finally made it to Luxemborg at 10:36am. This time I was couchsurfing with a girl, her name was Benedicte. She was really cool. Originally from France, and also having lived in Berlin, she was living in Luxemborg for the past 2 years. I had a lot of fun with her. I initially asked if i could come and she show me around the city, but I had so much fun with her that I ended up staying the night! ... read more

Last Thursday we went to Nancy, France for a school trip. The city was really cool. The entrance was all gold lampposts and decor. The walking tour was really cold, but it was interesting to see all of the arcitecture. It was really cold so when we got the chance to go in banks and see the design we all took up the tour guide on the offer. After the tour we had 30 minutes to walk around...that didn't give us enough time to get back to the part of town with all of the shops so we picked up a warm waffle wiht sucra (sugar). It was so good...it went down like a hot KrispyKreme doughnut. But then we had a few minutes and it was cold so Emily and I decided to walk around ... read more

So I have arrived in Luxembourg! We have spent the last few days doing orientation activities with school. We have had to sit in lectures on different aspects of the culture, family life, and school and also had the opportunity to visit/tour different cities in Luxembourg. I went on a tour Lux city half by bus and half walking. We got to see where the Duke lives and where all the shops and cafes are in the area. We also went to visit the WWII museum and listen to a lecture on Luxembourg involvement in WWII. We have learned so much and gotten to see so much so far. I have figured out the train and bus situation too! I have very early mornings, but it is all worth it because I'm in Europe!! I get ... read more

Today, like the title says, was our first day of classes. By the looks of it the semester shouldn't be too hard. Other than that two exciting things happened today: Our luggage came AND my name got picked in the raffle for a cell phone! The cell phone will save me a little bit of money b/c I won't have to buy a new one. I have yet to unpack but I'm so happy that its here...Now I can finally wear a different shirt other than the three shirts I've been rotating through! A couple girls and I walked around Differdange today just to check it out. Some of their stores are so strange...for intance one store had shoes, some clothing, kids toys, silverwear, bedding, vases, picture frames...and the list of random things goes on. A ... read more

Wow, I've done soooo much the past few days so I'll try to not get too detailed. On Friday we had orientation in the morning and after lunch we got on a bus and visited two cemetaries from WWII, one American and one German one. Then we went to Luxembourg City and did a walking tour. It was an hour and a half long, so needless to say we were all freezing by the end. THe City is beautiful and I definitely want to go back so I can walk around on my own and go in the shops and everything. After the tour me and some girls caught a train back to Differdange. We almost missed the train, and then for about 15 minutes we were sitting in first class (we have a second class ... read more
