Today is christmas eve and when Jonny and Joelle returned from Germany, we accompanied them to Echternach, a little village about 6km away from Mullerthal. Yesterday morning Jonny had bought these croissants that were filled with chocolate and it was so delicious that I just had to get more, so we went to look for a bakery that had some available, but as it was christmas eve most of the bakeries were already sold out or closed - just my luck:( After a short tour of the village, we managed to find a bakery that had the last four panne au chocolaat and as it was christmas eve and they were about to close, they sold it to us for half the normal price:) We visited a church in the village where christmas mass was going ... read more

Today the Orrs left for a concert in Germany. The kids were with Joelle's parents. We were alone in the house with Oonagh their big beautiful dog who we had to take out three times a day to do her business. Jonny wrote down the bus number and the directions into Luxemboug City as we wanted to spend the day touring the city. They also said we could use whatever groceries we wanted from the cupboards and we could also do our laundry, but darling Ben had already done all our laundry so now we only had clean clothes. The girls wanted to stay at home - Wi-Fi again, but I insisted we go into the city. The Orrs also said that they were not going to be able to do the christmas dinner thing as ... read more

OK the dates are all mixed up as the blog dates cannot overlap or the system cannot organise all the entries into one trip, so most of the dates are not right.:( Today is actually the 23rd of December and sadly we have to leave Verdun and the Augustinis. The recipe to spend a few cheerful days is definetely in Mesnil sous les cotes! It looks like an uninhabited back country village in the middle of nothing, but here's an extraordinary place - Ben and his sweet little family's home - a feeling like at home, a simple way of life - no barriers, full of exchange, totally truthful, with a bit of eccentricity, just perfect! The girls loved it here too and to add the cherry to the cake, they discovered Wi-Fi. We did not ... read more

So, what perfect way to start off a trip to beautiful France than...wait for it...LUXEMBOURG! Saturday evening, after donning our bussen to France, we watched Amelie, a very crazy French movie, on our way to the southern coast of Zealand. We then boarded a huge ferry, bussen and all and chugged across the Baltic to Germany. It was rough waters that night and we could feel the ferry swaying back and forth! Upon docking in Germany we fell asleep as we drove all night long. The ever lovely Ditte Marie (our fearless leader) woke us up at 9 am the next morning "Good Morning! You're in Luxembourg. Let's eat breakfast." Thus we had a typical Luxembourgian breakfast of a croissant, egg, and coffee. Yum. Afterwards...on to France!!... read more

Of all the places that I visited, I think the one country I would be most excited to go back and visited would be Luxembourg. When we decided to go to Luxembourg we decided to go to a smaller city that not that many people would go to as a change of pace from big city life. Honestly, I think Trebenice gotten under our skin and left a soft little flutter in our stomachs. Driving to Clervaux was an adventure in and of itself. We put Clervaux into the SatNav and it proceeded to take us on a country lane deep into the heart and forest of Luxembourg. We had read that Luxembourg had the cheapest gas of any European Country, so upon leaving Heidelberg we decided not to put a full tank in so that ... read more

Cruised down to Luxembourg city for a weekend break. Sitting at lunch on Saturday arvo, we noticed heaps of supporters dressed in red and white. When we enquired, we discovered that it was a World Cup game there that night, Switzerland vs Luxembourg. Ah, that explained all the cow bells!! We followed the crowds to the venue and scored a couple of tickets outside the gate. It had been sold out for some time, so we considered ourselves pretty lucky. The game ended up 3-1 to the Swiss and I suppose that ratio also reflected the number of supporters. Heaps more Swiss than Luxies. After a sleep-in the next morning and late checkout, we returned to the carpark across the road to put away our luggage and to go for a walk through the valley. Alas, ... read more

Four days to departure and six to commencing the trek! I can't sleep at night! Wake up in the middle of my dreams! and, dream I do, every night the past week! I never had so many dream nights! Wow! And not all dreams are about the mountains, some are about smaller peaks and valleys, if you know me, you also know what I mean :-P Others are about being chased by wild animals, others are … well … can't write about them here since my family reads it too :-P This past Sunday I run the 'Route du Vin' half-marathon along the most beautiful track I have ever run on - 10 km along and the retrace same path along the Moselle river, amids the vineyards and cheering locals. I was taking it ease, watching no ... read more

Last night was the test drive of the 65+15 liter backpack (it's huge!). I loaded 17 kg of junk (inlcuding a few bokks) and went for a one hour walk. First on the flat road along the Moselle river and then up the steep hills amongst the vineyards. The backpack felt great. It sits on the waist and barely feels to touch the shoulders, it pulls them back a bit, only enough to support the pack vertically. It should be fine to carry it for longer periods! 180 euros well spent!... read more

Learning from the experiences of my esteemed fellow travelers, I have decided to sign up early to the TravelBlog site and get a feel for it from the comfort of my couch, before I am forced to stare at some medieval monitor in the sticks and type on a crunchy/sticky keyboard in a dimly lit cyber café :) There are many interesting features in this site for which there will be no time to learn them on the road, so here I go, begin my travels a whole 10 days ahead of schedule. I also look at it that I extend my vacation by the same ten days. Though not sure how it works, because my whole life seems to be a one long vacation. If one thinks of work as means to live, and I ... read more
