Cruised down to Luxembourg city for a weekend break. Sitting at lunch on Saturday arvo, we noticed heaps of supporters dressed in red and white. When we enquired, we discovered that it was a World Cup game there that night, Switzerland vs Luxembourg. Ah, that explained all the cow bells!!
We followed the crowds to the venue and scored a couple of tickets outside the gate. It had been sold out for some time, so we considered ourselves pretty lucky. The game ended up 3-1 to the Swiss and I suppose that ratio also reflected the number of supporters. Heaps more Swiss than Luxies.
After a sleep-in the next morning and late checkout, we returned to the carpark across the road to put away our luggage and to go for a walk through the valley. Alas, no car! Our errant hotel clerk who had advised us to park in this particular carpark as it was free after 6pm on Saturday night, failed to tell us however, that particular Sunday was the ONE and only every year when there was a war memorial service and the carpark was blocked to the public...
A visit to the police station confirmed we had been
towed. And, we were 20 minutes too late that day to pick it up. Come back tomorrow morning at 7am - Monday! So, we spent another night there, rose bright and early to get to the police station by 7am, only to be told this time that although the office was open, the paperwork didn't arrive until 8am...
Anyway, nearly 200 Euro later in fines we had our car back and were on the way home...
Despite that, Luxembourg is a very pretty city. Check out the photos and I think you'll agree.
