Clervaux, Luxembourg
The statue of the American soldier, a thank you from Clervaux which was liberated by our troops. Of all the places that I visited, I think the one country I would be most excited to go back and visited would be Luxembourg. When we decided to go to Luxembourg we decided to go to a smaller city that not that many people would go to as a change of pace from big city life. Honestly, I think Trebenice gotten under our skin and left a soft little flutter in our stomachs. Driving to Clervaux was an adventure in and of itself. We put Clervaux into the SatNav and it proceeded to take us on a country lane deep into the heart and forest of Luxembourg. We had read that Luxembourg had the cheapest gas of any European Country, so upon leaving Heidelberg we decided not to put a full tank in so that we could get cheaper gas. But... as the SatNav took us on a random country lane we nearly ran out of gas before we found a gas station that actually sold gas. Luckily we did not have to add "running out of gas" to our list of unexpected adventures.
The town was gorgeous. As we drove along the little country lane in the middle
Clervaux, Luxembourg
Representing the people of Clervaux cheering the soldier. of a forest it gradually began to dip down into a little valley where we got our first view of the city buried into the mountain with a castle at the center and another on a hill to the west. It couldn't have had a population of more than about 500 as you could walk from one end to the other in probably 15 minutes. With the thought of a shower and food in our minds we walked through the little walking only part of town to find a hotel with internet capabilities. The hotel room could not have been more comfortable, but we knew that we were running short on time, so we showered quickly and went to go find something to eat, we tried a bar first that sold cheap drinks and had a menu outside, but when we asked the waitress for a food menu she looked very insulted that we were speaking at her in English, so we decided to try to the Chinese food place next door which was the best decision we could have made ever. The food was amazing, the view was lovely, there was nobody there (probably because it was 10 o'clock
in a town of 500. I'd been trying to explain to Della that in a town this size we would be lucky to find a place open) and the cook was a very nice, very friendly Chinese man that spoke French so we were able to understand a little of what he was saying. He asked us if the food was good about six times, which it was amazing, and showed us a picture of him serving the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. That night we slept better than any other night on the trip an woke up to a castle outside our hotel and a statue of an American Soldier complete with a flag outside our window.
Something that I've noticed about Europe is the people do not try to hide how they feel about Americans. The people in Belgium were indifferent to me, the people in Holand hated me. Poland loved me, Czech was indifferent, Germany hated me, and Luxembourg adored me. We had breakfast at the hotel, which was a complimentary continental breakfast complete with cold cuts, bread and eggs. Della laughs at me because in Europe it is customary to eat the cold cuts with a
knife and fork, and the bread with butter on it, but I have a compulsion where if I'm given bread, meat and cheese I make a sandwich, call it the American in me. So, after lunch for breakfast and a shower we took off to explore the town of Clervaux. We walked up to the first castle and around to a giant church on the adjoining hill and explored the little shops in the town before deciding it was time to go. We had two days left, one day to drive to Paris and see it then onto Normandy to sleep on the beach, and a day to explore the beaches of Normandy before heading north to catch our Ferry back to England. Clervaux truly was an amazing little fairy tale town though, one that I would love to take someone special to for a romantic getaway, because Clervaux deserves romance.
