Founded in 963, Luxembourg became a grand duchy in 1815 and an independent state under the Netherlands. It lost more than half of its territory to Belgium in 1839, but gained a larger measure of autonomy. Full independence was attained in 1867. Overrun by Germany in both World Wars, it ended its neutrality in 1948 when it entered into the Benelux Customs Union and when it joined NATO the following year. In 1957, Luxembourg became one of the six founding countries of the European Economic Community (later the European Union), and in 1999 it joined the euro currency area. To be updated

Day two in Luxembourg started off rainy and gray, but that’s just par for the course in this part of Europe. A friend once told me that if you wait for the rain to stop before you travel, you may not ever go anywhere. Living in Belgium I’ve learned to take this little nugget of wisdom to heart, and not let the rain stop me. So after a decent breakfast in the hostel we made for the train station to do a little exploring. Now, Luxembourg has a really nice deal for traveling within the country. For five euros you can [View Full Entry]

On the Train to Ettelbruck
Ettelbruck
The Memorial to Gen. Patton

Our next stop in Luxembourg was Vianden, a short bus ride from Ettelbruck. Vianden’s claim to fame is a huge castle perched way up on a hill…something I had to see. Once we got to Vianden we didn’t have much trouble finding the castle since it was the most prominent feature in the town and was visible from just about anywhere, but we did make a few wrong turns before finding the correct road. At one point we sent Daniel into a bar to ask directions. He got directions, but they were all in German, and thus were useless to three [View Full Entry]

Intro There wasn’t much going on this weekend so Daniel, Christina, Laura, and I decided to take a trip to Luxembourg. We had a social event on Friday night so we opted to meet at Gent St. Pieter’s on Saturday morning at 8:30 AM. The meeting time was a bit early, but we all made it. We caught the train out of Gent just before 9:00 and were looking forward to a nice, peaceful ride across Belgium. Initially we got what we wanted, at least for the first half hour. Scouts Everywhere Apparently this weekend was “the” weekend for the Scouts [View Full Entry]

Medium rare horse steak with mushroom sauce...ummmmmmm.
I've ridden them, bet on them, but never knew they were so tasty.... So we’re in Luxembourg, we’ve found a nice restaurant, we’ve been walking all day in the sun and the rain, we’re hungry…really hungry. Since most everything closed at 18:00 and we had nothing else to do, we were planning on a nice long dinner. Which is exactly what we got. We arrived at the restaurant (I’m still kicking myself for not writing down the name) and got a great table for four upstairs. The only problem was that the menu was written in French. Between the four of [View Full Entry]

Luxembourg-ing It seems like a good idea to update this blog before I go on my next trip - or else I'll be overwhelmed by the amount of blogging I have to do! But firstly... may I present "The Day Without Water!" I woke up at 2pm today (due to my wonderful earplugs that shelter me from the boisterous fellow international students coming home between 3:30 and 5am most nights) and made my breakfast. Outside my window were some men drilling in the parking lot. I didn't think much of it and ate. I went to wash my hands in my [View Full Entry]

Luxembourg is a small country with a big visa stamp. Big for a country that small. Well, actually, not really. It's got a good size of a stamp, but it wasn't a proper visa. I got it at the city tourist office, so it was kind of cheating. I was ill all the way from Brussels to Luxembourg, so I can't tell you much about the drive. Whether it was scenic or not, I don't know. I would think so. Spent most of my time there at the Christmas markets which was in the main square. There was the city tourist [View Full Entry]

10/11/2005 Luxemborg? First and foremost, welcome James! I really thought he was on this listserv, but was saddended by the fact that I was mistaken. If I can scrape together $20, when I return I will treat him to some delicious carpaccio (which I've eaten TWICE in Lux! and once in Italy!). Though Berlin, Bordeaux, and Oktoberfest were thrilling experiences, I am sure you've all been wondering about my living experience in Luxembourg. I attend classes in a Château (French word for castle) that has existed for over 700 years. It is quite cozy, with all the modern amenities for whic [View Full Entry]

Well, after a lifetime of thinking that Luxembourg was the capital of Sweden or some such rubbish, I've now discovered that it is, in fact a tiny wee country stuck in between France, Belgium and Germany! It only measures about 50x20km's or something like that, and has only one city: Luxembourg! :) It's lovely, and I'm trying to get my camera to work on this @#$! computer to prove it... wait a minute... meanwhile, in other news we are currently heading to Belgium at breakneck speed (although not as breakneck as some of the cars on Ze Autobahn ya!!) and we [View Full Entry]

After being woken up at 4.00am that morning at the carwash ( it was a big night for the boys).....tried to get a few more hours sleep before heading to Luxembourg. We decided to take the back roads through the north of the country and then head down to the capital. However we lost the road signs on the border and drove for the next hour hoping we were heading to Luxembourg city and not going in circles in and out of Luxembourg back into Belgium. All the roads signs just say Luxembourg! Fornunately our killer powers of navigation (honed after [View Full Entry]

I followed the Mosel River into the tiny nation of Luxembourg. I ended up staying an extra day in Luxembourg. I usually blast through the tiny country on my way to something more interesting. This time I decided to spend a day touring within its borders. What a great choice! Wonderful roads along the Mosel River… other roads wandering through forests so thick that no sunlight penetrated the canopy in spite of it being a scorching day. I’ll defintely have to pay Luxembourg more mind in the future! [View Full Entry]
