I’ve now been back in Dublin for almost a month after going home for the holidays. As soon as I got back, it was as if I’d never left. The city was as welcoming as ever, my friends were ready to meet up and catch up, and classes started back up before I knew it. Though I had a great time back at home, it was great to get back to Dublin. Things have been quite busy since I got back. The first weekend I was here a few of my friends and I ran a 10k in Phoenix Park, one of the largest parks in Europe. Aside from the wind, rain and even hail, it was great! I hadn’t run a race like that since high school and it was my first 10k ever! I ... read more

I did it! I survived my first semester in grad school at Trinity College!! It's almost impossible for me to believe the entire semester is over already. It went by so quickly! And though the past few months have been some of the most fun I've ever had, they were not without work and far from easy. Especially the last few weeks. After coming home from my grandfather's funeral, I had a lot of catching up to do. I went from class to the library to work and back to the library, day in and day out. I had so many papers coming due and tests to study for, it seemed at times quite overwhelming. But with my birthday falling on December 9th, usually right before finals, it's always a nice break from it all. Though ... read more

Getaway in Galway

It's hard telling what could happen when you take four Americans, two Irish and one German and put them in a gorgeous coastal town in Ireland for the weekend. Things could get crazy. This is exactly how I spent "reading week" last semester. "Reading week" on campus, meant that we didn't actually have any classes, so some of my couresemates and I decided to celebrate by spending the weekend in Galway so we could relax, refresh and regroup for the second half of the semester. Though we didn't have classes, we still had hundreds of pages of readings to do and a thesis outline to write, so we were all in the library more than we would've been had we had classes. By Friday, we were ready for a break. And a break we got. The ... read more

I learned long ago that when a friend invites you to visit them in a place you've never visited, it's foolish to refuse. When my friend Samantha said she would be visiting Scotland for work while I was in Ireland and asked if I wanted to come over to see her, my first question was, "when should I book my flight?" I had never been to Scotland and after hearing from so many people how beautiful it was, Scotland was definitely at the top of my list of places to visit this year. So, after class one Thursday, I set out on the painless 45 minute flight from Dublin to Glasgow. Though it was quite late when I got in that night, it was so nice to see my friend Sam and her mom who had ... read more

How is it even possible that I am about to start my fifth week of grad school? Time has flown by so quickly since I started that I can hardly believe it. My semester is almost half over. Here is my assessment of my program this far: I love my classes. I love my professors. I love everything we’re studying. I absolutely adore everyone in my course. I am honestly having the time of my life. I have to say, I think I got incredibly lucky with my course. I don't think I could've designed one better myself and the people I'm studying with are just incredible! We're currently taking three classes which means we are only in class for six hours a week, but spend at least 20-30 hours a week reading or writing papers. ... read more

It’s now been two weeks since I landed in Ireland - and I’ve been loving every minute. It’s very rare that you come to a place, especially a place abroad, and feel completely comfortable and at home. That is exactly how I’ve felt from the minute I landed in Ireland. I got incredibly lucky in regards to my living situation. My house is right in the city center and just a short 10-minute walk from Trinity. Everything you could want or need is within walking distance. My roommates are amazing and we have so much fun together. And after hearing horror stories of looking for places to live from the other graduate students, I feel especially lucky since I didn’t even see the place before moving in. Attached are a few photos of my house (though ... read more

I can feel that westward wind blowing. It’s about time for me to move on again. Next stop: Ireland. After an incredibly relaxing and much needed two months at home in Kansas, today I’m heading to Ireland to start a master's program at Trinity College Dublin. I'll be studying Comparative European Politics and couldn't be more excited. And while it sounds like quite the unbelievable move, I'm not sure anything has ever felt more right or that there's ever been anything I've felt more ready for (or so I think). I just finished a year in Washington D.C. My first year out of college. My first real job. My first time to move away from Kansas for an indefinite period of time. And, at first, it horrified me. For the first time in my life, there ... read more

Nearly three months after returning to the United States from my internship in Brussels, Belgium, after applying for nearly 85 different jobs, I have found and accepted a position in Washington D.C.! Though I had never been to D.C. before this summer, for years I have wanted nothing more than to end up in D.C. On August 3rd I will start a position as the Press Assistant for former Vice President Al Gore's non-profit The Alliance for Climate Protection and I could not be more excited. - July 23, 2009 It's now been over a year since I started writing this post that I, until now, had not been able to find the time to complete. That in and of itself is very indicative of what my life was like in D.C. From the moment I ... read more

I suspected that my post about my final day in Brussels would be my last entry. I know it's been a month now since I left Brussels, and I apologize for just now getting around to writing about it, but it's been quite the month and it looks like my adventures are far from over. Well, to quickly summarize my last day in Brussels, Michael and I flew back from Venice early enough to do a bit of Brussels sightseeing before packing everything up and heading back to the U.S. the next day. Believe it or not, I had not yet been to see the Atomium since I got to Brussels nearly three months earlier. The Atomium is this massive atom-looking structure that was built for the 1958 World's Fair. As Michael and I headed towards ... read more

We had heard that though over 20 million tourists visit Venice each year, a majority of the visitors only stay for one day. Though we thought Venice was absolutely breathtaking and incredibly relaxing, one day sounded about right to us. Beside’s St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, there aren’t many must-sees in Venice besides the city itself. The canals are amazing and it’s stunning to just see Venice, but even the gondola rides run around 100 euros for 40 minutes, it’s not the easiest city to navigate around in, and it's jam packed with tourists. It is very nice that there are no cars in the city, though navigating through streets that randomly end at a canal can be a little frustrating. Once again, the first thing we did when we got to Venice was ... read more
