So, after a long night of trying to sleep in a train, and not being totally sure if we were on the correct train, and of strange stoppings and random police boardings, fading in and out of sleep, and general lunacy, not to mention the entirely too recent memory of Oktoberfest on our minds, we woke up at around 0700 somewhere in the province of Lombardy, Italy. Our excitement, however, was short lived. As we neared Milano, everything became more and more dirty. We finally arrived in one of the largest and nastiest trainstations I have yet seen, where I had to wait around for what seemed like an age guarding our stuff while Eric changed in the bathroom. Frankly, my first impressions were not very positive, apart from the melodic tones and overall animated Italian ... read more

PHOTOS AND FRENCH VERSION TO FOLLOW SOON / DES PHOTOS ET VERSION FRANCAISE A SUIVRE PROCHAINMENT... Ciao ragazzi e ragazze di Milano! It's fashion week darlings, in Milano, or it is next week? non lo so, but already this week the fashionistas are throwing parties (Armani!) and visiting their stores (Dolce! or was it Gabbana? non lo so again but it was fabulous, darling, fabulous), and George, Robbi and Nina are mooching through Via Monpeleone, checking it out, and looking gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous, except for the oil and cheese I dripped all down the front on my t-shirt from the deep-fried bread stuffed with cheese I ate (delicious!)... I slank (slunked?) off home to change and met George and Robbi and their posse of Italians and Italo-Australians for Lombardi food (Milano is in the Lombardy region) ... read more

Next morning we had brekky then went to Central to try to get our tickets to head to Lake Como also referred to as Lario. This is the third largest lake in Italy and the deepest, with a maximum depth of around 410 mtrs. While the Como section is relatively narrow and the mountains behind are somewhat uniform, the Lecco branch is more rugged and rocky. The northern part features deep valleys and tall mountains, and is the most dramatic. The central section of the lake, based around the triangle of Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna, is where the scenery is most spectacular. We used the self service machine (thanks to all Nat’s research!!) and thought we were doing alright even though it was more expensive than we had expected. We finally managed to validate it (with ... read more

It was then time to move on so we went for a wander and decided to look for Castello Sforzesco which we finally managed to find… turns out when we were at the Dumo we were within a few minutes walk but because we wandered the other way we ended up having to trekked half way across Milan to find it!! I like to call it the scenic route!! Ok, so the castle, have to say Nat and I were too busy talking to do the full tour of the castle (but hey that’s why we were in Milan, to catch up right?!?!) The castle is huge, and was the old duke of Milan’s headquarters. Many artists took part in its construction: Brunelleschi, Bramante, Gadio da Cremona and Leonardo da Vinci. Napoleon ordered its destruction, but ... read more

15th September We went for a walk to Piazza della Scala, home to the city's famous opera house which was designed by Giuseppe Piermarini in 1776-1778, to hold up to 2,000 spectators. We decided that rather than take a tour through the theatre, we would try and get last minute tickets to the final performance for the month. The deal was you had to come back at 6pm. We went for a walk, had lunch then went back for the tickets, after working out the system we finally managed to get some (which were close to the last ones!!) and then had an hour and forty five minutes to get back to the hotel using the underground, shower and get back for the show! It was a challenge but we’ve been under pressure many times in ... read more

Whilst waiting at the airport I got a message from Nat saying she was delayed by 1.5hrs… but that’s the way it goes with us!! Nat had set about planning it perfectly so that our flights coincided with each other, but alas it wasn’t to be!! After checking through and a long wait and a relatively short flight, I finally arrived in Milan where it was raining, glad I had taken out all my long sleeve item after checking the weather in Milan for the last few weeks!!! Argh!!! It took over an hour for my bag to appear at baggage claim. I was dying of thirst and there was no where to get a drink… I exited and waited for Nat at the arrivals section. I couldn’t see her flight on the board for ages ... read more

First thing in the morning we found a nearby internet café to check to see if our booking for ‘The Last Supper’ had been accepted, unfortunately we left it a bit late and didn’t get one. We went back to the hostel and I checked out because it was my last day. We bused into town, and decided to check out the Milan Duomo, (Milan’s main church), It is a fascinating building with an equally fascinating history, dating back to 1386. Check it out here if you want: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duomo_di_Milano). We spent quite some time in here, especially because it was raining outside, (the only occasion during my whole time there). We didn’t really know what to do for the rest of the morning, so walked around again, we found a supermarket that sold whole cooked chickens. ... read more

We were gonna get an early train, but couldn’t be bothered in the end so had a bit of a sleep in until checkout. Our train got delayed for some reason so we went to a café in town with Tamara. We said our goodbyes to her (Thanks heaps for everything Tamara), and made our way to Milan. Once we got into Milan we struggled a wee bit to work out where we had to go, they really haven’t labeled their underground system that well. They have signs but they are few and far between. Once we deciphered it all, we made it onto the correct train which was absolutely chocker, half of the people were football supporters going to AC Milan versus Athens. We thought about going, but tickets had run out, and we wanted ... read more

Absolutely wasted - flying at midnight after leaving Ko Samet early getting little sleep and arriving early morning is the recipe. Despite that the view flying over the Alps was beautiful. Europe is all sparten chic efficiency after asia. It all worx very smoothly with occasional slight language confusion. I stayed one night in Milan to have a look around. The old city is fascinating with its medieval architecture. Apart from the huge number of cafes the other thing thats hard not to notice is just how fashion conscious and dressed (or not) the women are. I checked out the Piazza del Duomo, city walls and buskers before a 2 hour train trip to Bologna. ... read more

Time spent in the suburbs of Milan: One Month The Garbagnate Camp was comprised of the naughtiest children, however, I stayed with the sweetest family. The Uboldo Camp (a twenty minute car ride away) was the most orderly and best functioning of all Camps… There Paula and I habituated in a new modern flat…with a spiral staircase and lemoncello chilling in the fridge. There was seven tutors and seventy children. ... read more
