I had a ten-hour layover in Milano on my way from Amsterdam to Prague, so of course I went into town for a looksy. From the Malpensa Airport, I took an express train to the center of town. I had heard from everyone who had been in Milano that the city does not have much to offer and that it is just a modern Italian city known for its graffiti (which if you have not guessed it is an Italian word). In fact it is Italy’s largest city, but my experience was actually different from what I heard from people. True, there isn’t much to do in Milano except shopping. Unless you’re a fashion fanatic, the top sight in Milan is either the Last Supper painting or the Duomo (the cathedral). Since I didn’t reserve to ... read more

We woke to the smell of freshly baked warm croissants and floated downstairs on the aroma. Let me clarify, our accom this time was what they call an Agrotourista which basically means a farmhouse for tourists. Usually its a husband and wife deal, they have extra rooms and rent them out to travellers, serve them meals, let them help out on the farm etc. This one was a bit more upmarket than that, but VERY cool and still VERY authentic. Today was going to be a real struggle....not. Absolutely beautiful day, not a whisper of a cloud in the sky and after breakfast we were going to walk 20 mins up the road to learn about wine making and then enjoy a homecooked lunch over some tastings..... We had a blissful sleep although I suspect there ... read more

(note to readers...this is a little delayed due to impossible net access further north in Italy) Yay! Today we head to Priocca, a divine little vineyard town about 1 hour east of Milan. We got up in Levanto, and headed up the massive hill loaded up with our packs (wishing I had a suitcase with wheels) to the train station. While waiting for the train I figured out how to play one of these crazy Italian pokies and managed to win enough money for lunch, great start to the day! We boarded yet another train, I thought I'd let the Trenitalia staff drive today, I was a little tired, then headed for Milan! We only had a day in Milan, in fact we only had about 4 hours, so we had to make the most of ... read more

So it is my last day here in Milan.....and I have slightly mixed emotions. I have been a little sad to leave but now that I am all packed and pretty much ready to go, I am ready to come home. It will be good to get settled and stop spending so much money traveling every weekend (even though I love it!) These last few weeks have been great....its really cemented how blessed I have been in this whole endeavor, how much this is exactly the place I was supposed to be. At the beginning I knew that because things kind of came together like they did....I found housing (for free at that!), we had a great bunch of interns that I loved hanging out with, the people I worked with were so welcoming and interested ... read more

So here I am, looking out my 7th floor window and thinking how much I love this city.....also thinking I have six weeks left here....then having the jolting realization that it is really 4....and so I must get everything I have yet to do done really fast. That is going to include climbing the Duomo in Milan, trying my best to see an opera at La Scala, going to Naples this weekend with Francesca (yay for Napoletano food!) and of course wrapping up all of the things I have started/worked on here at my job. Things have been busy here but I really didn't think it would fly by this fast, and I really didn't think I would be so sad to leave! I have so much enjoyed the work environment here, I really like A ... read more

This week was so busy at work! I feel like I barely slept this week but its okay because that means I was out doing fun things. We are in "peak season" for visas, which let me tell you is great fun. I have been enjoying apertivi after work (which I was corrected actually means a drink, but in trying to equate it to something in the U.S., I said appetizers, which is actually antipasti). So moral of the story is that "apertivi" is kind of like happy hour, but with better food than peanuts and chips. So there. That's what I've been doing a few times a week and its fun. On Wednesday night I went out to dinner with Stefano and Lucia to (re) celebrate his birthday. It was really fun, albeit long, but ... read more

So Friday night the Marines had a TGIF happy hour at their place. They have a really nice place where all of them live, just on the other side of the wall from the consulate. It was fun and nice to socialize with people from work outside of work. One thing I reallylike about the group at this consulate is that it is a pretty close group, everyone is really friendly, knows everyone, and is really helpful. The CG's secretary, Debra, is always telling Laura (the other intern) and I that if we need anything to just let her know because she knows how hard it is moving to another country all alone. So it was fun. The Marines do this happy hour every Friday to raise money for the Marine Core Ball, which I guess ... read more

This week we went to Turin, where the winter Olympics will be next year. We went on Tuesday to meet with a group of people who are in the hotel industry there. It was a really nice "light lunch" of pork, pasta, vegetables, really good wine, a delicious dessert, although i have no idea what it was, and cappuccino afterwards. We had lunch and then my boss held sort of a forum for questions about the services that the U.S. Consulate in Milan would be providing to American citizens in Turin during the Olympics. It was basically to inform them of what types of situations they could send right to us and then to make good public relations with these people so if we needed something with them (like a room for destitute Americans or something) ... read more

So I have just about finished my first week of work here and I think I like it. It has been a bit slow this week for me because I am still getting used to things here and seeing how the office is run. But the nice thing is that Im not learning the entry-level job that most people in the office do. My boss is giving me things that he needs to do but doesn't have time to or just that he wants me to help out on, so that is nice because I am actually seeing what it would be like to do this as a job. I sit in on visa interviews with him also, the more interesting of which are in the afternoon, what we call the "not-so-easy-cases" because they are the ... read more
