If you ever go to Milano by plane from the North (for example from Stuttgart or Munich) in the winter time, try to catch a flight in the early morning. In case of this you will have a great view over the Alpes and the rising sun! I flew from Stuttgart to Malpenza airport and saw the Lake of Constance and the Lago Maggiore as well. Milano downtown can be reached within 40 minutes with the Malpenza express for 11 €. I've been there on business, because of that I've been able to see Milano just at night near my hotel.... read more

Ive just spent 2 weeks in Milan learning Italian - and what an experience! I lived with a family - a women and her 2 children (a girl aged 18 and a guy aged 25. They were really nice. Luckily the mother and daughter spoke English. I love the Italians but some of the ways they do things just confuse me. I hope I dont offend anyone with the following stories (just know that I'm telling it as I saw it and I get that not every Italian is the same). First the language since that was the main reason I was there. I was told that the gramma was going to be really hard. But to me if you know the words then saying them in the right order isn't 100% necessary. I think probably ... read more

Trick or Treat? I still can't get my head wrapped around Milan. Today's the first day I did proper sight seeing. Everyone (particularly the men) are in business suits, giving it a more serious vibe compared to any other Italian city I've been to. However, the cathedral, Il Duomo, changed my opinion of Milan exposing the historic side of Milan. It's absolutely stunning. Inside is dark and I was almost immediately accompanied by 'Rodolfo' who insisted on guiding me around. He did point out interesting notes about some of the history and art peices but when he tried to kiss me (and not just on the cheeks!) I'd rather walked out clueless. ICK!!!! After flat out rejecting his request to see Milano together I quickly escaped and climbed to the roof, every single step trying to ... read more

Unfortunatly Milan turned out to be one of our least favorite places to stay. Beyond the hostle that I mentioned in the last entry the sites in the city were all too far apart and required us to travel on one of the worst Metros that we have traveled on so far. It was way too crowded well beyond rush hour and it smelled pretty bad. The few places that we traveled to were not that interesting. The most interesting part of this city was trying to find the sites. We started the day visiting the Duomo (cathedral) in Milan which was pretty, but most of the building was covered with scaffalding for cleaning. The stained glass windows were probably the best part of this disapointing visit. We paid for an audio guide of the church, ... read more

Yet again another travel day. Only this time instead of having the usual train, we had one with compartments like they do in the Harry Potter movies (the theme music from the movie got stuck in my head as we took our seats). It was neat to know what it's like to travel in one of these. I also noticed that in the period of one train ride they actually change the direction of the front of the train. It was strange and I'm not quite sure the purpose of this. All I know is one minute I'm facing forward, and the next I'm backwards. It's tricky. We had a hard time getting around teh station as this was our first day being in a place where neither of us speaks the language at all. But, ... read more

This morning, we had planned to take the Venice Aquabus to its furthest destinations, the islands of Burano and Tronchetto. Burano is supposedly like a smaller Murano, and Tronchetto is the first island settled in the area and full of history. Unfortuantely, it was very foggy this morning, so we decided to move inland to Milan. Milan is only about 90 minutes from Venice and is on the way to Lake Como, so we decided to stop in to see the Duomo Cathedral and have some lunch. Little did we know, driving into and around this massive city is no easy task! It was like Udine times one hundred. Once we finally parked the car (1.5 hours after exiting the freeway) and walked out onto Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, we were able to breathe a sigh ... read more

Last weekend Erik and I went to Milan to visit our Italian friends. We had always been told that Milan was nothing really special and we would be better off going to Venice, Pisa, Florence, Rome…. What a bad advice! The only good thing about this bad advice was that we haven’t created expectations, and once we got there…. Milan pretty much exceeded all expectations! Despite all the rain, we had a wonderful weekend with our dearest friends and enjoyed a bit of good food, beautiful sightseeing and of course, excellent shopping trips! The least we can say about Milan is that it is glam! To my surprise, Milan is quite different than any other Italian city. Sorry if I will upset others, but Milan is a country apart! Very polite people and service, efficient public ... read more

This was my least favorite city -- note the lack of interesting pictures...the best part of the whole trip was the transvestite palm reader name Ashleigh that Juliana and I ran into walking out of one of the museums....he or she should i say, told me when I was going to get married, when I was going to die, and numerous other minor details hehe -- it was an interesting experience to say the least...... read more

Note: I am posting this a couple of days late. I wrote it earlier, but it takes a while to load all of the pictures, and I haven’t had a couple of hours to sit down and dedicate to posting it. Just FYI…Also, I should mention, for my parents' sake, that we were not in Rome when the trains crashed... First off, let me just give a quick clarification here in case you missed the last post. All of the pictures that we post on this blog have captions with them—even the ones at the bottom, below the text of the blog. If the captions do not automatically appear, just (double?) click on the pictures, and the picture will become enlarged and the caption will appear. Okay, enough of that… I tried to get Gretchen to ... read more
