hey guys, finally i'm back on the blog which means i'm somewhere exciting, it feels so great to have my backpack even though it's only for 2 weeks. i'm in Milan now, on the way to Egypt, i arrived this morning at 9 and i'm leaving tonight at 10. i chose to have a long transit, not sure if it was a good idea coz i haven't slept for 24h and i've got another night to wait meaning i'll make it 48h without sleeping. you should see me right now, i'm just walking around the city like a zombie. i will be arriving in Cairo tonight a 3 in the morning. Milan is ok but nothing extraordinary compared to the other italian cities. there's not many things to see, so i've got more time to ... read more

Said arrivaderci to Venice and took the train three hours northwest to Milan. On the train ride I could see the Dolomites off in the distance and they were basically saying with their snow-capped peaks “you gotta get through us to leave Italy”. Which I am bummed to do. Its strange, I have been in Italy nine days, I feel comfortable in the country, I am getting the hang of the language and just how the people operate. Great place to visit. Visit and living are two completely different things though. Made it to Milan. Big city, full of fashion and models and a duomo. Only here for the night, trying to cut down the would-have-been eight hour train ride from Venice to Interlaken. Now it’ll only be four or so tomorrow. Got off the train ... read more

FINALLY! ITALY! This morning we left Switzerland and crossed into Italy! We just arrived into Venice a few hours ago (about 7pm) but we did have a short stop earlier today in Milan, aka: fashion capital. I personally did not find Milan too appealing compared to Lucerne and stuff, but there were two redeeming elements in my opinion: Piazza del Duomo and Castello Sforzesco. We were only here for literally 1hour and 15mins but my sister and I ran to the castle from the cathedral anyway. ... read more

i walked to the piazza del duomo today and spent a lot of time in and around the duomo. it was spectacular. my photos are probably not an accurate assessment of its beauty. it is a great gothic structure and the only one i've seen; it made a big impression on me, exposing me to how art can be everlasting and forever changing. 'course i could have done without all the scaffolding. i also saw at the palazzo reale a kandinsky exhibit. its the first time i've seen is work up close. his style is like none other, well planned and executed which makes his work seem spontaneous and exciting. the colors were vibrant and used with real intensity. i enjoyed it thoroughly. the day was good. i spoke italian to most and was even ... read more

Milan was amazing! Always wanted to go there! It is my first trip since I was a young teenager and it was exciting to be on my own. The Dumo was beautiful and the square was a relxing place to sit and watch everyone from locals to tourist to birds on the statues to kids playing and running around. When I sat in the cafes and restaurants, there was always a waiter to talk to and ask about places to visit and how there life in Milan is. I was only there for 2 days, but I would like to go back for a week next time and visit Lake Como and Lake Grada and Bergamo! Watch this space. ... read more

today was an experiment in respect. respect for boundaries, culture, intelligence, et. al. i finally slept a solid 7 hours last night and seem to be adjusting to the time change with very minimal jet lag (hooray!), so when i woke up this morning i picked up the milano section of the corriere della sera (the newspaper). it was harder to read than i'd prefer, but my comprehension of the language is pretty solid. so far my uncle and cousin are speaking english 100% of the time, its their preferred language at home- kind of disappointing. after glancing through most of the articles i decided to take a walk down the street, toward the duomo, but stopped at the basilica where da vinci's last supper is. the church is beautiful. the hoard of tourists in ... read more

11:11 pmin aero lights are on and there’s a baby screaming, wincing, crying, doing everything but sleeping...just like me. i got a few hours of sleep, i think. she’s blonde and a stinker, with the Boo-style pigtails and a devilish smirk; and all her parents have done to remedy her is walk her around so that everyone can be woken up. on a lighter note, i feel some reassurance because the woman i’ve shared the plane ride with is named amy, just like my mom. so much like mom! she is very little and teaches art history, her hands aren’t as old looking but there is only one of my mom. i’m so excited to actually be on this journey. i've been worried, but it will subside because i should trust that i'm capable, 'cause ... read more

So, Day one of Italy occurred on what seemed to be an ordinary Thursday evening. I mean we had a successful flight, found our hostel, checked-in, dropped off our bags, and headed out in search for food. Well, being in Italy we had a very big decision on what to eat.....pizza or pasta. So we went for pizza, especially as it was cheap! 5euro for a whole pizza! So, everything is pretty standard so far, right? WRONG! We happened to sit down at the pizza place next to a fashion guy. He works with a big jeans company. He also is an editor for a magazine. He translates for lost Americans in pizza places on his free time. That is in between his monthly trips to NYC and LA to work with such names as ... read more

Milano... The home to the rich and famous... The World Fashion Capital... Endless galleries of luxurious designers’ boutiques... Mecca for shopping-addicted people from all countries... I just love LOVE that city! I came there to shop for some designer outfits, to catch up with some friends, to meet new gorgeous people, to experience fabulous nightlife, and to breath that Milanese air that makes you believe your life is Dolce Vita and not much more. There is no need to tell that people in Milan are known as very stylish and trendy. Obviously, they are spoiled by continuing fashion shows and high-class shops of the World most known designers. I had a chance to experience Milan’s life from the inside (I am very thankful to my Italian friends for that). I had a chance to visit almost ... read more

…and back to Milan. It is hard not to feel an immediate hatred (or at least apathy) for Milan after being in one of the world’s most beautiful Old World centers, Florence, for a weekend. The two are impossible to compare. Fortunately, the immediate gut reaction can eventually be overcome when the city is explored with a more accepting eye. The metaphor has been totally overdone, but Milan is sort of like an onion: you have to peel back layer after stinking layer until you find something you like… and sometimes it leaves you crying (Easter dinner… yuck!). Luckily, just below the rough exterior is the heart of the city: the Duomo. While Florence’s Duomo is a colorful red-roofed spectacle, Milan’s is a grand, white marble behemoth. One of the largest cathedrals in the world, it ... read more
