The depressing realization that we were no longer on a Greek Island or on a beach called Paradise was with us until we got back to our hostel and found a nice little party. Cheapest beers in Athens they say and they are correct. Then the bar in the hostel closed... but wait they took us to the “Orange bar” (it had a orange sign). After a handful of Mythos and buying a sweet .5 liter mug from the bar for a euro and went back to my room and got a wonderful surprise of some new English friends. After a late night conversation with one of them I hit the sack. The next day we ventured to the Acropolis with our new English friends. We had a guided tour guide; well it was a ... read more

Well, as it turns out, there are no trains to Barcelona on Thursdays. So we stayed last night in Milan, it was actually quite nice, a little hotel just by the train station, quite cheap. They even brought us a lovely breakfast in bed. Fresh rolls, all kinds of jam, two hard boiled eggs, tea and orange juice. Yummy. Our train dosen°t leave until 750pm, so we have some time to kill, (it is only 230) AND there are some train strikes today sooooo.... we will be keeping our fingers crossed. I don°t really know what to write about. OH the gypsies! Yes, there ARE gypsies, and YES they are exactly how you would imagine them to be, skirts, scarves, bangles and all. And pigeons. Lots of pigeons. The ones here in Milan are much more ... read more

Surprisingly, we got up at a reasonable time and caught the Metro into Milan’s city centre. The first stop was the Castello Sforzesco, originally started in 1368, but torn down to use the bricks for the city walls in 1447. It was rebuilt over the years with help from Da Vinci. Personally I think one of my favourite features is the fountain out the front! We walked through the Castle to the park on the other side which houses the Peace Arch, Milan's equivalent to the Arc De Triomph. We walked down the main street, Via Dante, lined with exquisitely old buildings, which lead us straight to the city centre and the magnificent Duomo Cathedral. The Duomo captivates the whole city, sitting centre stage in the large piazza. The pinky-white marble structure took over six centuries ... read more

Ever since I was little I have always had a desire to explore the world, to get out of the small town that I grew up in. I knew that there was more to the world than what I was used to. So I told myself that one day I will travel and see what I can. And so this is where it all begins, and why I chose to study in Milan, Italy. I know that I am starting this blog about 4 months late and that I have only a few more weeks left in Europe but I will try to back track a little bit to tell you about everything for all those people I haven’t kept in touch with (I’m sorry!!). January 2007- At Logan Airport I dragged my three suitcases ... read more

This morning, as I wake up BACK in Milan, BACK at my same place with my same life coach landlord, it just seems so surreal! I thought I'd be livin it up on St. Patty's day with dave and friends... but no. I'm stuck here in Milan until god knows when. Read on... I was SO proud of myself. Yeah, maybe I was tired... but my only 2.5 hours of sleep last night would mean that I would sleep for the entirety of the plane ride home to the US and beat the jet lag. Up at 5:20am, taxi to Milano cadorna at 6am (which, in milan is still considering "night time" and the fare STARTED at 10.20 euros!!!), and train to the Airport at 6:27am would mean that I'd get to the airport around 7am... ... read more

I left the Pinoteca Brera around 18:45 and it was just getting dark. Hopefully you'll enjoy these pictures I took on the way home and at dinner. I ate outside and I had a spectacular view of the Duomo all lit up. Also, you'll see pictures of the drummers... there was a large commemoration event surrounding an historic battle (italians v austrians is what someone told me) in Piazza Mercanti.... read more

Well, after a month living and working across the Atlantic... it's time for me to head back home. Just when I thought I couldn't possibly see a case in the OR that was *any* cooler, I walked in this morning to see a patient awake and talking to the neurologist while her dura was being cut open! This was a 38 y/o WF who had a low-grade fronto-temporal astrocytoma on the L that was found to be (based on MRI, perfusion scans, and functional MRI) dangerously close to both Broca's and Weirnicke's areas and also the primary motor area. Therefore the used "awake anesthesia" (as the italians call it) and performed cortical mapping with an electrical brain stimulator. I was looking directly at the patient's cortex and also watching her respond to the neurologist's questions and ... read more

I did not know what I was in store for when I set foot in this GORGEOUS GEM of a church on the busy and very hip Corso Magenta. Every inch of the interior is covered with ornately painted frescos. The brilliance of the color and design is unparalleled by any other church I have ever seen on ANY of my travels. It was initally built in 1503 and was home to the Benedictine nuns. Because of this, the church is two parts adjoined: one section with the altar for the congregation and then a larger cloistered hall in the back for the nuns. Both parts are equally as incredible. Since my first visit I've been back a couple of times... to relax and unwind in the special space that is San Maurizo. ... read more
