12.08.2019. Our first full day in Budapest, we caught a HOHO bus this morning and spent a few hours being driven around Budapest. What a grand old city is it too. The architecture is wonderful. The temperature was hot, 33 or so, but luckily we could sit under the sunshade on the top deck. At some stage the driver decided to pull the awning right across the top of the bus, which was a jolly good idea! Aussie weather it reminded us of but even we don’t sit out in all that sun! The traffic was very heavy today so it was slow going on HOHO but we did the full circuit and opted for an early lunch. This afternoon, we found a beaut restaurant on the Pest side of the river where we had a ... read more
We loved the tiles on the church’s roof. Plenty of this around Budapest.

Today is a day of two halves. I have plenty of time to see more of Budapest before catching the 15.34 train to Zagreb. After a fairly cloudy day yesterday I am pleased to look out of the window at a cloudless sky. I have an excellent breakfast in the Barceló - I am in the restaurant before 08.00 and it is still fairly quiet, although it gets much busier by the time I leave. I only need to check out at 12.00 so I head out early. I know it is going to be hot, and plan to get back soon after 11.00 to have another shower here so I can feel fresh for the trip to Zagreb. It is just brilliant to be so central. This morning I want to see other places that ... read more

This is the first post of my travel blog. Please don't expect anything more than a few simple jottings! The purpose is in part to share my journey with friends and family. I am also writing it as a log for myself to remind me of the various places I will be touring to next summer when once again I do my side hustle (tour manager for Trans World Travel, based in Chicago). Day 1 sees me flying to Budapest. This is slightly at odds with the above title - Europe by Rail. However this is simply to maximise the time I have. I suspect that I have already tried to pack too much in which won't be a surprise to any of my friends, especially Sue!! It was pouring down as I left home. I ... read more

The first thing to mention is that I am on a three-week trip with one cabin-sized case, as I want to travel as lightly as possible. I remember from my student interRailing days how important this is. The steps up to European trains are generally high, and you often to have to store cases on high racks. So I recently had treated myself to a new Samsonite Paradiver cabin case. It is perfect for this trip - it is a spinner i.e. four wheels, it is a cabin bag, so fairly small, and it is BRIGHT yellow. This is an excellent choice from a crime prevention perspective. An offender is much ... read more

We had set in motion ideas for our 10th Anniversary quite some time earlier. I had always fancied a cruise and so a cruise to Norway was booked. In the meantime several life events have overtaken us and the high price tag and Southampton departure meant it wasn't such a good option. So thinking caps back on and a trip to Hungary, Slovakia and Austria with rail connections ticked all the boxes ? The Ryanair flight ✈️ to Budapest was mid afternoon and although it was more costly than our usual flights, it wasn't bad at £216 for the both of us which included the priority and extra leg room. The timing was perfect though - time for me to get my nails done ? in the morning without rushing, along with a late lunch at ... read more

Budapest.....Day 1 We arrived at the airport and looked for my name on a board as the Metro from the airport to the city is under repair and we would need to swop onto a bus along the way, so I got our Amber Garden View Apartment fellow to organise a taxi for us. We had a very pleasant ride with a chatty driver and learnt some of the city history on the way. Our apartment was a good choice, very central and walking distance to most things. After settling in we went for a walk around and down to the river front. We found a restaurant in the walking street and ordered our food. It eventually came, as we had ordered local fish with chips for two, we were expecting good food, when it arrived ... read more

The bus leaving Bratislava didn't arrived for the scheduled 4pm departure. The Austrian girl we were sitting, waiting with said she had got a text saying that there was a 90 minute delay so we sat under the shelter of the outdoor bus bay surrounded by lightning and thunder storms waiting for its arrival. It arrived at 5pm and after the poor, exhausted driver checked everyone's passports and loaded their luggage we ended up leaving at 5.20pm, only 10 minutes before the next bus service was scheduled to leave for Budapest, making it even more frustrating for the driver in explaining to most of the people waiting that it wasn't their bus. I felt for him. Christina, the Austrian girl who lived in Budapest, helped us get off at an earlier stop in Budapest called Kelenfold and showed ... read more

What a beautiful city !!! Budapest is my favourite of these Eastern Europe cities . The buildings are lovely .it is really easy to get around , the streets are fascinating where-.ever I have been and getting lost is a pleasure .Although the people do not seem overly friendly they are helpful. . The streets here are relatively straight and have a logical pattern and the street maps are easy to read as the corner building always has the name of the street on it (Prague ,s map was good also ) There are many pedestrian areas . Food is really good , i had wild boar with blueberries on a scone last night , and the subway ,tram and bus system are efficient and not to expensive , a 24 hour pass is @4 dollars ... read more
