11 May - So yesterday was bidding adieu to Moscow and travelling to Budapest. We had visited Budapest in 2015 and I had promised to return one day to relive the beautiful memories! And here we are! Yesterday was travel, reached late at night and checked into an airport hotel. Today shifted to an partment and after settling down a slow paced stroll along the Danube recollecting what we did 5 years ago was relaxing!. There is another charm in revisiting a place because you are not doing the touristy things. Just soaking in the flavour. Today we start at the Castle hil ,to enjoy breath-taking views over Budapest and the Danube . The Palace, National Library and the National Gallery. We then take a ride down the Castle Hill Funicular Railway to Adam Clark Square ... read more

The Paris of Central Europe: I had read that the best time for visiting Budapest was November and there I was, landing on the city in the wettest time of the year Although prior to visiting, I didn't know much about the capital, Budapest captured my heart from the very first moment I landed on its soils and it is easy to see why the city wins you over quite quickly. For once, it's got plenty of history to offer, delicious food and very friendly locals. Indeed, Budapest comes across as a very youthful city and for me, there is a whole host of reasons why it should be included in those destinations needed to be visited before you die -as they say- or at least, one should make sure to include this must-visit city in ... read more

On our first day of the river cruise we moored up at Solt which is in Hungary. We were driven over the Hungarian plains to a Horse Farm or Puszta Farm where we were given a glass of red wine and a piece of bread with pork fat and paprika on it! Not as bad as it sounds!. We were then treated to a show by the local horsemen who showed us their prowess with horses and whips. They also showed us the long horned grey cattle which are used for tilling the fields. We had a cart ride into the fields for a glass of apricot brandy and a bun and a tour round the stables where we saw close up the long horned sheep which were in the field nearby. A short pleasant trip ... read more

Although we had been to Budapest before we ended up going back to the same places we visited before mainly because we were with different people who hadn't been before. We stayed at the Buda Castle Fashion Hotel ,a nice little friendly place in the old part of Buda. As it was late on our first night we walked out of the hotel and found a lovely little bar with a very friendly lady owner who also gave us meat and cheese to have with our wine. Can't remember the name but it is just down the road from Jamie Oliver's restaurant. The following day we visited St Matthias church which has some beautiful stencilled patterns on the ceilings and walls. The experience was somewhat spoiled by loads of Japanese taking selfies everywhere. After the obligatory ... read more

Slow start, breakfast and then a bus to the Fine Arts Gallery. Then back to , the city station. Which is an amazing old building that I’m sure could tell many a story. Not the one I arrived at. Budapest has 2 very large stations of different eras. But both old to anyone from Australia. I love the way the Europeans called something ‘new’ that is still very old to us. For some things they say, ‘new old’. A lot of homeless/beggars are in this area. Every city I’ve been to has had it homeless people or beggars but some seem more hidden in their city that others. Budapest’s homeless people have been more obvious as I’ve wandered around. More beggars also. I’m not sure what that means or if there are more but that’s how ... read more

A bit chilly this morning at 18 degrees but the sun eventually came out and warmed the day a little more. Today, I decided was going to be a quieter, slow day. Hopped on the bus and headed towards the cruise dock. I can’t come to Budapest and not cruise on the Danube River. In hindsight it would have been better on the 27 degree day but the Danube is the Danube. Arrived an hour too early so wandered off towards the Parish Church of the Blessed Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary nearby. Partly covered in scaffolding I found the entrance and the doors were so large and heavy in stunning 11 Century timber with a beautiful brass handle I could hardly open them. It required a ticket from the reception desk that was 1000 ... read more

A perfect weather day so jumped in the bus and headed back over to Buda. Walked up to the Citadel with the stunning monument of the Symbol of Budapest. A woman with strength in her physical build and her stance holding up a large olive leave to symbolise future peace. A good walk uphill that delighted in the most magnificent views of 360 Budapest and right along the Danube which is the second longest river in Europe. Heading back down on the bus I stopped at the waterfall at Rudy’s Furdo and ended up walking a fair way up the stairs again. There is always that sense of curiosity that takes you much further than intended. But once again the views didn’t disappoint. Unfortunately it was quite a dirty spot as well being littered with rubbish ... read more

On the outside of the Terror Museum wall is a line of portraits of those who were executed or tortured to death by the Soviet regime during or soon after the Hungarian uprising of 1956. Below the portraits people have left dozens of candles, ribbons and lamps, many of them still alight. Inside of the museum are rows of portraits of Hungarians who perpetrated the torture and murder of their fellow countrymen. For reasons known only to the custodians there is a ban on photography inside which was disappointing. It’s hard to summarise the museum. It’s moving certainly, detailing the inhumanity of man but it’s also disjointed and confusing. Many of the exhibits were either unlabelled or only described in Hungarian or Russian. There were strands of barbed wire in a glass case, tattered items of ... read more
