To travel up the cliffs to this "white washed" city we chose the cable car over a donkey ride. As we ascended up we learned that this entire island is in fact a volcanic crater. The village we visited was Fira (mostly a shopping and tourist destination). We managed to find 2 churches - the catholic church of St. John the Baptist with bells on top and a Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Both of them were inspiring. We ended up shopping for quite a while as we looked at various icons, jewelry, and clothes. Janine made out well. We then hiked down the 588 stone steps back to sea level and returned to the ship. After lunch Janine was treated to a 50 minute massage followed by a very elegant dinner at Tuscana. This is one of ... read more

Much excitement on the day we left Rhodes as this was our first ferry trip amongst the Greek Isles. We started off bright and early, and just as well as we were re-directed to the commercial harbour from the tourist harbour... this is half an hour walking with all our packs,so we had to dig into that old travel spirit of ours and toughen up. Arriving at Symi was wonderful, the town, of the same name, is situated in a curve around the harbour. You might have expected the white and blue colouring here, but that is not the case. Here on Symi the old patricia style houses are painted in pastel colours. Many years ago Symi was famous for its sponge fishing and these sponges were sold in Triest. The locals of Symi took a ... read more

Hello all! So It's been a while since we last updated the blog, but here goes nothing...... A lot has happened since our last entry. Dusans birthday was great. We ended up rolling back into the apartment at 8AM! So the next day we ended up sleeping until 5 or so and saying good bye to the people we met. Nothing too crazy. Early next day we got up and caught a ride to Belgrade airport to catch our ride to Athens. Nothing too exciting there, but figuring out the Athens metro/ train system sure was entertaining! Every thing we used to find out where we were going was outdated so we made a whole bunch of random stops and may or may not have gotten off and the wrong stop. Athens as a city was ... read more

Thursday 26th May, 2011 Packed our stuff again and left our cases at reception in the Nemesis for the day. We had a breakfast in the cafe just down the road. Full breakfast, which included home made baked bread with butter and jam. The bread was wonderful. Bacon, eggs and tomato, with orange juice and coffee, for €5.90 each. Set us up for the day wonderfully. Then wandered off to into Thira and on the way to find the wonderful exhibition described in all the guides at the Nomikos Conference Centre. We duly found the exhibition and it was shut. We were not far from the cable car down to the old port and went to find it just so we knew where it was for later, as it was about 1230 now and we needed ... read more

This morning we had a relaxing breakfast followed by a walk up the hillside along from the Santorini Princess Hotel. We sat for a while on the wall in front of the church and took in the wonderful views. We then went down to Thira for a late lunch and ate at the Parea Restaurant. I had a greek beef stew and the others had pork and potatoes. Jan and I then went and shopped for more souveniers. My small carry-on bag is bursting with little trinkets that I have collected along our journey. We drove back to the Hotel and had a quiet afternoon before going out to dinner at Maria's and Nikos' place. Jan and Mike were staying with Maria and Nikos last week and they very kindly invited us all to dinner. We ... read more

Wednesday 25th May 2011 Pat popped out to the Carrefour first thing to get some bread rolls for our breakfast. We had this and packed up our stuff. We were due to move rooms this morning. I spoke to reception and the other room wasn't ready yet so we left our stuff and went for a walk. We left the hotel and went to the Museum of Prehistoric Thira just up the road, entrance fee €3 each. As Greek museums go not bad and tells a lot about the city they are still excavating at Akrotiri at the other end of the island, which is not open at the moment because of an accident in 2005. After this as we were next to the bus station decided to pop to the northern town of the island, ... read more

Today we drove to Thira and Mike parked the car in a No Parking Zone. LOL. There were no other parks available. We took the cable car down to the Old Port below Thira. Our sailing vessel was called St Nikolas. It was a lovely timber sailing boat, beautiful. We sailed over to Neo Kameni and hiked up to the top of the volcano. It was quite a struggle to get to the top. The top of the volcano was still smouldering and smelt strongly of sulphur. We then reboarded the boat and sailed to the Hot Springs at Poleo Kameni and some of the people from the tour had a swim in the Hot Springs. We then sailed to Therassia where we had lunch at a water-side restaurant called, Captain Johns. After lunch we sailed ... read more

Sunday 22nd May 2011 contd We had a short stroll around the immediate vicinity early in the evening just to loosen our legs a little. We looked in the tourist shops but didn't spend any money. Did a little surfing in reception and that was really it for the day. Monday 23rd May, 2011. Plan for the day, get back to Iraklion, book ferry for Santorini for Tuesday and find accommodation for the night. We packed up our stuff paid the bill, retrieved my passport and left about 9.30. We stopped at a little roadside cafe along the way for some coffees but basically drove straight through arriving 1230 ish. We had missed the port turn off so ended up coming off the main road at the airport, drove past and took the lesser road back ... read more

Hi all. Just when you thought it was over !!! I found a blog that I had saved but forgot to publish - so here it is. We set off this morning to visit Kamira and have a look at a friend of Michael and Jan's, Kati-na's, church. Firstly, we drove up to Mesa Vouno. This road was a very steep, narrow and winding and Mike did a terrific job negotiating the hairpin bends. The views from the top were fantastic but it was very windy and quite cold up there. We then visited Vourvoulos - Maria's residence- Mike and Jan stayed in a villa at Maria's last week. We then drove along the bottom road and back up to the top to visit Oia. We had lunch at a restaurant called, the Seagull which was ... read more
