Well, we've been spending the past week and a half bumming around the Greek islands and I have to say I am loving every minute of it. Sasha and I caught a red eye flight from Rome to Santorini, with a six hour stopover in Athens in the wee hours of the morning. What can I say about Santorini? It's everything you imagine when you see photos of it. It's magical, beautiful, captivating, and has that mysterious feeling about it. Sasha and I really hated leaving and had even extended our stay there by two nights, but that just wasn't enough for us, and we still talk about going back there instead of to Mykonos. That most likely won't happen. We made some great friends during our stay there and ended up having our own little ... read more

Well, we arrived here in Santorini on the 19th (I think, the days are blurring together...) and are planning on being here until the 25th. We've already done quite a bit since being here. We checked in at about 6am and went to the beach out front here in Perissa and watched the sunrise. Quite beautiful! We then eventually got some breakfast down the road, and spent the rest of the day just lounging around the hostel as we were both quite tired. I unfortunately fell over with my big backpack on some brick stairs our last day in Rome and effed up my ankle pretty badly. It was the size of a tennis ball for quite a few days and has only just gone down, but I still can't bend it very well which makes ... read more

Santorini We arrived in Santorini and managed to snag a double private room, I agreed not to cuddle Kel while we slept and then we were off to find Jem and Grace's accomodation. I followed Kelly's dodgy advice and navigation and we ended up in the entirely wrong direction. We finally turned back to town but were stopped by two girls on a quad bike as they asked the time, I eagerly grabbed my phone out to tell them and they said they couldn't hear me, just show me the phone. When they attempted to grab for it Kelly snatched my hand back and the girls took off. I immediately thanked Kel for saving me from getting my phone stolen. Arg I am so naive sometimes. We found our girls and headed into town for jewellery ... read more

04 Aug 2012 Last night we arrived in Santorini. This is an amazing spot. An island that literally blew its top 2000BC spelling the end to then Minoan civilisation on Crete, some 70, miles away as a 100m tidal wave swept the island of all existence. The crater, or caldera, is several miles across and small villages cling to the basalt clifftops. It is not a done deal as only as recently as 1956 a new landform appeared in the caldera. We moored up against it last night and tied to huge lumps of pumice! This morning we moved to main part of the island an Oia and climbed the hills well above the boat in the bluest of bays. The views from the rim of the caldera are quite astounding. The little Greek villas and ... read more

Day 3. Kargi Koyu to Astypalia. Whilst not fluent in German I think I recognised some of the words screeched by “Bruno” and “Hilda” next door to us as the Meltemi picked up at about 0100 this morning and they swung into the path of recently-arrived gullet (a Turkish pleasure boat). Not knowing them we felt for them as the Turks were utterly non-compliant or interested as they had little option but to up-anchor and find somewhere else with echoes of “schiesse” as they disappeared into the darkness. Lisa was clearly pretty concerned as she rolled over and did slightly less than the Turkish protagonists. After that the wind blew still and we wrapped up a little yet still sleeping on deck until 0630 before we heard Dad putting on the coffee and it ... read more

We were stoked cos today we had almost a full day till we flew out so could have a day all of us just relaxing by the pool. We got up about 9am and wandered down to breakie to enjoy the buffet style again! Then togs on and down by the gorgeous pools! We started off in the shade actually skyping home – nanny, gramps, Janine and barry – to get all the local goss back home! J Then dad stayed in the shade and mum and I headed for the sun. It was so hot! Ben tells me apparently it was 37deg! So I didn’t last long between swims! I was in and out of the pool like a yo-yo! But was really nice. We then had a break from doing nothing after about 5-6 ... read more

We slept in until after 9am, we must’ve been really tired! After leisurely showering and dressing we wandered down to breakfast...a great assortment to choose from...bacon (quite salty tho) eggs, croissants, fruit, cereals, and a coffee machine...not too bad at all. After breakfast we were off...at least keith and I were off on a day trip on a boat...for someone who feels seasick on a boat moored at the harbour, not a great thought...but, armed with wrist bands that were supposedly going to stop the seasick feeling, off we went, leaving Rach to lie in the sun and catch up on some of the blogs. After being picked up in a bus, we had to weave our way down to the port to catch the boat, down a really steep, really narrow road on the edge ... read more

A wonderful day around the island - though brutally hot, topping out at 40 C (what is that in fahrenheit?). Started with a taxi down to one tip of the island, Akrotiri. This is home to the famous archeological site. Akrotiri, back in its day during the 1600s BC, was one of the great cities of the world, and had established trading routes all throughout the Meditteranean. It also produced some of the great artwork of the world. But it was horribly decimated by a giant earthquake and volcanic eruption, and never really recovered after that. At Akrotiri, a lot like at Pompeii just outside of Naples, you can see volcanic ash mixed about in the ruins. What's also nice about Akrotiri is that it's completely covered, meaning that the Greek government was smart enough to ... read more

To me, Mykonos is just okay. It's extremely beautiful, and the town is fun to get lost in, but if it honestly wasn't for nearby Delos I probably would've skipped over it and gone maybe to Naxos or Paros instead. Mykonos is just too hung up on its party animal image, which is a shame, because it has so much more to offer. Same reason why you can't spend more than 3 or so nights in Vegas. The appeal wears off fast when there's nothing really beneath it except money. So I wasn't really upset to take the 2:55 ferry about 3 hours farther South to Santorini. This was on a far smaller vessel, a catamaran, that can go super fast over the water. Added to that, we only made one stop, on Paros. Got in ... read more
