Another enormous gap and now I realise that if I continue at this rate I´ll only do another three or five entries by the end of the trip. That´s no good. Split So. After checking into the hostel in Split, we had a bit of a chill day. Kathleena decided she was going to go shopping, and we walked around and around the old town. There are narrow cobbled streets, lots of marble, and some very, very old buildings. It´s right on the sea, but the sea isn´t quite as nice as Dubrovnik. The reason for Split being a big tourist draw is that it´s the site of Diocletian´s palace, which is not so much one building as a neighbourhood. It´s surrounded by tall walls, outside of which is the old town. Kathleena got a dress ... read more

I arrived in Berlin at 10am on Wednesday. I went to the hostel, dropped my bags and walked straight to the Brandenburg gate. I had lunch and then went on a "free tour" (it's tip based) of Berlin. The tour lasted four and a half hours and I really enjoyed it. The guide was really good and he told us some German history and showed us around former communist East Berlin. I really like Berlin, it has some weird energy. It's so steeped in history. I instantly had the feeling that my four days here will not be nearly enough. We saw the gate, the holocaust memorial in the centre of town, the site of the bunker where Hitler committed suicide, a remaining section of the Berlin wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the main sites in central ... read more

Our last Europe installment took us back to Nurnberg to view the Eurocup quarter finals (Germany vs. Turkey) back with our friends. We spent a great evening watching the game in a pub in a small town near Nurnberg where Joachim's boyfriend, Stephane, went to dental school and lived. Once again the excitement in the air was extreme, since Germany was playing Turkey, and Germany has a high Turkish population, there were high tensions. Whoever won this game would play Spain in the finals on Sunday for the championship. Germany won... and the streets went wild. An impromptu parade broke out in the streets. Cars blowing their horns and German flags being waved everywhere. It was a blast. After the show its the after party... On Saturday, we took off to Wortzberg in search of a ... read more

Had a bit of a rough start yesterday...was packing before work and could not find my one and only check card. Turns out Tuesday night got a little too crazy and I left it at the bar. Despite all the minor panic, I flew out of Cedar Rapids on time to Chicago to D.C. to Brussels, Belgium, to Berlin! Now I am awaiting check-in time at 2 pm (have been waiting for about 4 hours now). I got lost in transit from the airport to my hostel. I tried extremely hard to speak decent Deutsch, but the minute an English word pops out, suddenly no one can communicate with me. Besides the nice bus driver. The first driver was not so friendly and i got off at the wrong stop for the U-Bahn (train). All in ... read more

I really thought I´d be telling you all so much more, but using the internet isn´t cheap here, and we have so much to see. So, I´ll be frank, and post some pictures. I came down with a cold in Interlaken, and spent much of the time resting. The weather wasn´t so great, so being indoors wasn´t killing me. On our last full day, Graham went canyoning, while I laid low. I knew that getting in the cold water would only make me feel worse. I needed to feel alive for bungey jumping, so after a nap, and a Red Bull, i was ready to go. The scenery was incredible. We took a gondola, up a mountain, passing homes that looked like they could have been the home of Heidi. When we got towards the top, ... read more

We then left Holland and headed over to the west of Germany. Really nice and green country side. Was quite a long drive so we ended up spended the night in a place called Werden, not far out of Essen. It was a really nice little village with alot going on (for a Sunday night anyway). The next day we headed further down to the Rhine river and stayed next to it in the City of Cologne. Rode our bikes along the river and had a walk around the city. We then sat by the river in the sun and drank a few beers. Later on at the campground we meet an American guy called Dan. He was from Colorado and was currently hitch hiking around Europe for 3 months. He was a really nice guy ... read more

"Berlin ist arm, aber sexy."........"Berlin is poor, but sexy." spoken by Berlins' mayor in 2004 Many cities are recognisable by their grand old buildings. London has Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Edinburgh has Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile, Beijing has Tiananmen square and the Forbidden City, Prague by Wenceslas Square and Charles Bridge. Berlin is unlike these other cities in that much of what is recognisable about it was built in living memory. The dust is still settling around Berlin after momentous, traumatic change - you can still see pieces of the Berlin Wall and where it once stood and sealed up bullet holes in buildings. Walking around Berlin, you can identify whether you are in the old east or west Berlin by the traffic lights at pedestrian crossings. The pedestrian traffic lights ... read more

I arrived in Kiel on the northern coast of Germany (on the coast of the Baltic sea) on June 21 in the mid afternoon. The train from Copenhagen took about five and a half hours, but went very fast due to the very good book I was reading, "Unweaving the Rainbow" by Richard Dawkins. When I arrived in Kiel I was greeted at the train station by my friend Janine who i studied with at Penn State last year. She lives and studies in Kiel, a town of about 250,000 with a lot of students. My trip fortuitously coincided with a festival called the Kieler Woche (Kiel Week), which is a sailing festival officially, but really it's just a big piss up with hundreds of stalls and extremely overpriced food and drink and a lot of ... read more

First entry here in Dortmund, Germany! We've travelled around 1000 miles on the road already and are well into the swing of things. Driving on the right has been pretty easy for us all to adjust to, though navigating on a map with only the largest roads in Europe on has proven tricky! After cramming all our junk in the car, our first stop on day 1 was in Paris via the Dover-Calais ferry connection. Arriving around 7.30pm, we had time only to plan the next day's activities. We were delayed entering Paris due to strikes but spent the morning in a lovely little cafe in the suburb we were camped in. Our whistle-stop tour of Paris included the Arc de Triomph, the Champ D'elysees (no idea on the spelling!), some of the famous streets in ... read more
