Where to start... we’ve packed a helluva lot into the past four days, including our return trip from Vienna (Monday), daytrip to Salzburg (Tuesday), a great walking tour of Munich (Wednesday) and an ok bike tour of Munich (Thursday). In between, we managed to become football fans, (we even have the hats to prove it!), Tony learned how to play rummy (something I thought ‘not possible’), and yes, we drank a lot of beer and jagermeister! So here we go; sad to leave Vienna, we woke up to fantastic weather and we were going to Munich which was forecast to be rainy (and it was). The good part about that is that continued our run on the weather. Virtually every day but one in Vienna (Saturday) and then today in Munich, we have had sun, cloud, ... read more

I am officially on European soil, checked into the hostel in Munich and I am dead tired. I have to wait until 3 pm for check in time, so I have been walking around the area and sitting in the hostel lobby drinking a beer. It is awesome, but I need sleep. Hope to see a bed soon... but the beer tastes really refreshing, and I am excited to be here... read more

Just a quick one from Roho since I've got a bit of time... Richard's hand flared up again while we were here in Munich - and the German medical system is much more efficient than the Czech Republic's! In about three hours yesterday we saw a few doctors, had an X Ray and blood tests. None of which showed up anything, but the gaggle of doctors, students and nurses gathered around the X Ray decided to at least treat the symptoms (pain and swelling). This involved wrapping the hand in alcohol soaked bandages and supporting the whole forearm on a sort of half cast thing. Richard can keep taking painkillers and keep pouring alcohol on the top - it's apparently cooling and soothing and take the cast off when the symptoms disappear (what about when they ... read more

Another great day in Germany. We all love this country, and agree that Munich is a great place to visit. When we initially setup this vacation, we thought 3 days in Munich would be enough, but there is way more to see that we were able to fit in. We leave in the morning for Florence by Train, and we are literally across the street from the train station (see picture from our hotel window).... We slept in this morning, and for all of us it was our best night sleep so far. We had a late breakfast (except Rhiannon who opt'd for yet more sleep), and hit the streets before noon. We walked west into the center of town, and I was surprised my how small the center of town really is. I'm sure Munich ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin June 19th 2008

Again, speeding down the Autobahn, we flew to Berlin in about 5 hours. We actually didnt stay in Berlin, but outside of the city about 40 minutes in Joachims family farmhouse. The house was in former East Germany, and it was very interesting to see the differences there. The farms around the house had lettuce patches and horses. It was really quiet and peaceful. We went into Berlin and did some sight seeing. All the neat government buildings and monuments, and then went over to the Holocaust memorial. After that, Checkpoint Charlie, an old gate between East and West Berlin where tensions rose during the Cold War, and also to pieces of the Berlin Wall. That night, we went to the area of town hosting the gay festival that attracted over 300,000 gays from outside of ... read more

Travel Blog: Day 6 Heidelberg Welcome back to the world that keeps spinning. We are now in the old town of Heidelberg. This is a pretty old city, and very different from either Frankfurt or Cologne. I have now been to 3 different cities, and none of them have looked anything alike, its like you are in 3 different countries, but they are only about an hour on the train apart. Things got off to a bit of a rocky start when we got here. When we got off the train, we noticed that it was pretty hot. We figured maybe it was just the train, but its actually 10 degrees hotter here, and the distance is like Elkhart to Indianapolis (probably even less). So we went down to the information station to look at a ... read more

Travel Blog: Day 5 (I think) Cologne/Heidelburg Welcome back to the good life. I hope that all is going well in America, but I must say, things are better here than they are there… this is simply because I am living a glorified life, traveling around, meeting strange people everyday and having fun everywhere I go… sure beats working. We are on the train right now, going from Cologne to Heidelberg. Heidelberg is known in Germany as a students city, there are a lot of universities and colleges there, and it is supposed to be very good to the youth. Problem there, is that when we planned the trip, Josh and I both had different places that we wanted to go to. Cologne was my main choice, because I am very interested in the Kolsch beer ... read more

Travel Blog Day 4 Cologne Quite the day/night in Cologne yesterday. We started the day off by heading down to the Am Dom Cathedral, which was pretty neat… we just missed the English tour, but went on our own mini-tour with myself as the guide for Josh (since I am Catholic, a lot of stuff is universal). The Cathedral was beautiful with a lot of very interesting sights and the extravagance of it is amazing. This Cathedral actually took about 600 years to build instead of the standard 100 or so, because of different wars and trade barriers that prevented its completion. The highlight of the Cathedral though was the tower. There was very large spires on each side of the Cathedral, and you had to pay 3 Euro to go up into one of the ... read more

OK so I know I have not written in a few days, it is because I am having such an awesome time in Berlin!! In fact I am staying 2 days longer because I love it sooo much. I made this choice on the first day. I feel in love with this city, it is not beautiful as Salzburg or the country side, however the history is what made me fall in love with this city. Most of you know how much I enjoy history especially post WW2, and if you did not, well now you do. The great divide in Berlin after WWII of the Soviet occupied area and the West (American, French and the British occupied area) is so interesting. To see how one side of the world lived and then go 20 min ... read more

Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Lake Constance June 18th 2008

In my time living in Baden-Wuerttemberg, I have been lucky enough to travel around to most of the region and discover a new part of Germany. However, I had never been in the Black Forest or to the Bodensee(Lake Constance) both of which I had heard were beautiful. I was luckily enough to be offered the chance to take a day trip to both, by none other than a local Schwarzwalder, Bruno. Bruno grew up in the Black Forest and therefore was the perfect guide for my first trip to the region. (not to mention he speaks Schwaebisch - a dialect of German that is extremely difficult to understand). Our day began in Karlsruhe around 9 am in a car with 4 German window flags attached. Yes I said 4. Bruno was quite proud of his ... read more
