It was yet another great day here today! We met as a group this morning and discussed how things were going with their families and at school. It sounds like things are really going well! We heard lots of fun stories from home and trips that they have been on around Hamburg already. Funny and interesting stories abound! After our meeting, the kids went to class with their partner or attended an English class with Ms. Herder and I in order to help some younger German students with their English language skills. Then it was off on a walk to the Phoenix Mall. This 3 story giant had our kids grinning from ear to ear. They had about 2 hours to shop and wander the mall before we met for ice cream at a shop on ... read more

Hey all, So as I begin my last week in Hamburg, I am experiencing a vast array of emotions. A huge part of me is extremely excited to go home, but of course a feeling has crept up on my over the past week, the feeling that I know I will miss this place tremendously. We talked about re-entry shock, the opposite of culture shock, in my intercultural interaction class, and knowing me, I will probably be privileged enough to experience it. This entry will probably jump around a lot, because of all that is running through my head at the moment, but do your best to follow along : ). Joe and I went to my favorite coffee shop today, Black Bean, and just sat at an outside table for about an hour. Neither one ... read more

I arrived in Kiel on the northern coast of Germany (on the coast of the Baltic sea) on June 21 in the mid afternoon. The train from Copenhagen took about five and a half hours, but went very fast due to the very good book I was reading, "Unweaving the Rainbow" by Richard Dawkins. When I arrived in Kiel I was greeted at the train station by my friend Janine who i studied with at Penn State last year. She lives and studies in Kiel, a town of about 250,000 with a lot of students. My trip fortuitously coincided with a festival called the Kieler Woche (Kiel Week), which is a sailing festival officially, but really it's just a big piss up with hundreds of stalls and extremely overpriced food and drink and a lot of ... read more

Hey all, Well, tomorrow begins my last week of classes, and it still feels like I will never get to go home. I'm not looking forward to finals at all... for many reasons. I guess I never really got used to the University system over here. Classes once a week, Professors canceling classes left and right, and I never feel sufficiently prepared whether I go to class or not- for most of my classes. My human resources class, where my teacher doesn't speak any English (and it's supposed to be an English class) feels like a lost cause to me right now. I haven't learned a single thing from him all semester, but am doing the studying from the reader on my own, since that is in English. At this point I am praying that the ... read more

No new updates really, but I did come across some things that made me laugh, and because they are so incredibly true, I decided to post them. Below is the Hamburg song that we all know and love.. such pride! : ) Enjoy! You've studied abroad in Germany When: 1. You have sorted your garbage into at least 3 garbage cans and you know the difference (or should know the difference) between "Gelber Sack" and "Restmull" 2. You have ever drank: a Maß, Meter or Stiefel of beer. 3. You have ever had or not had "lust" to do something. 4. You get excited that CNN is in English. 5. You know what a Döner is, and you've eaten more than one in the same week from a different "Imbiss" each time. 6. You've been to ... read more

Hey all, So you're probably wondering just WHY I can't live without my Chinese roommates... well. Peng and Jueng just made their amazing dumplings and shared with me : ) I love authentic Chinese food, and I know I will miss them terribly when we leave. Anyway, backtracking... so last Saturday Joe and I decided to take a day trip to Berlin. We started out very early in the morning, which I'm glad we did. It is 3 hours away by bus, so we got to sleep on the bus going there, and coming home. Since it was just a day trip, I didn't feel like I got to see everything I had wanted to see, but that's what you get on a limited budget. We did not get to see the part of the Berlin ... read more

So as my title suggests, I found out this morning at the Einwohnermeldeamt that apparently we needed visas for stays longer than 3 months and we didn't know it; hence, as of May 1st, we were illegally living in the country. Bryan and I got our visas and everything is now straightened out. We find it weird that Mike never got this letter in the mail, so we are still confused on that. Last week was kind of a blur- Joe's family got here on Tuesday and I've been hanging out with them for a few days.. they are all great! I was only with them for 2 days as I had school on the other days, but on wednesday we walked around the Jungfernstieg area and went to St. Petri Kirche.. which was rough, as ... read more
