12 July: THE ARTIST who conducted guided tours in the Bergedorf castle park had told me, "On Saturday you must go to the Deichtor (dike gate) exhibition grounds." Problem is, when I get there I find not one but two art retrospectives going on simultaneously in separate buildings. Which one was I supposed to view? I should pay more attention. At first I'm not interested in the show of fashion photographer F.C. Gundlach, but find it increasingly fascinating as I wander around looking at location shots taken of models in such bold natural settings as the Sahara desert or grandiose man-made structures as in Brasilia. There are also black-and-white documentary photos taken during film productions, gala parties and the like in the late 1960s. In one room, which features fashions from the op art and flower ... read more

Geo: 53.5534, 9.9922I left my body wash in the shower yesterday morning - when I went back today, it was gone! Who the heck steals somebody else's body wash??? Aarrgh ...I left the hostel, for the ferry back to Svendborg - on the way, I stopped at the same bakery I went to yesterday but being early, there were none of those yummy thumbprint cookies :( Instead, I grabbed some assorted pastries. I've been having breathing problems since last night - there must be some plant or flower on this island that's giving me problems. I felt kind of like when I was in Naples for the first time, when I thought I was going to suffocate and die (see Euro 2006 blog entitled "A masterpiece so beautiful it made me cry ...." http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/pwong/europe_2006/1157658960/tpod.html?tweb_UID=pwong ) Luckily, ... read more

10 July: AFTER THE SECOND NIGHT at the guesthouse I again get lucky. A small ground floor bedroom -- the only one with internet plug-in -- becomes available. I move... in a hurry. I now can post these scribbles with snapshots again, even in the middle of the night, if I wish. When my mother was pregnant with me after the war, she was warned about high infant mortality statistics at the hospital in Bergedorf where she lived, so off she went to deliver her baby just outside the boundaries of Hamburg. Today I am checking out Reinbek, this small town where I was born. First stop, the local hospital nestled at the side of a forest, a 20-minute walk from the train station. "Sorry, we only keep records for 30 years," an administrator says (I ... read more

This particular video will play sideways as that is how it was shot and I don't have access to any video editing programs here. Our students were quite busy Wednesday evening. A solid group went for a tour of Hamburg SV stadium (the local pro soccer club), and others were packed with other plans. Poor Jeff though was without anything to do. I had received an offer to go indoor rock climbing with my host families son, and of course I took him up on the offer! Since poor Jeff had nothing to do, he jumped at the chance to tag along. ... read more

Here in Hamburg, they have a special name for their special weather. Schmuttelvetter. Even if you know no German, it works as an onomatopoeia to tell you what it´s like; grey, cool, air full of drifting drizzle that slowly soaks you without you knowing it. We arrived here night before last, after a late night short haul from Berlin, where we were supposed to stay. Since the only train we could catch was an Inter City Express (ICE TRAIN!), it was going to be really expensive, so we decided to use a day of travel on our rail pass. So we got in around twelve thirty (they say zero thirty here) and caught a cab to our hostel, then crashed dead. Here´s the thing with overnight trains. If you arrive after midnight, you mark down the ... read more

8 July: TRAIN TRAVEL IN GERMANY is a joy. Halle - Hannover 2 hours 15 minutes (travelling by car on the Autobahn you'd have to add at least another hour)! Thirteen minutes wait for the InterCity Express to Hamburg, 1 hour 20 minutes. And they are on time... by the second! I have a six-seater compartment -- like you see in those old movies -- window seat all to myself for much of the trip. Ah, feet up on the seat opposite (shoes off, of course), write on my laptop computer for a while, then doze as the landscape whizzes by -- from east to west. Conductor slides open the door to check my ticket, but of course no border police appears, like in the old days. After all, this is now one Germany, a united ... read more

Today we took a great trip to the nearby town of Bergedorf. While there, we toured a castle, walked through the woods, stopped to play a bit, smapled the fare at a local street market, and thew kids shopped to their hearts content. We left in a sort of Seattle rain, more of a mist really. By the time we stepped off of the train in Bergedorf, it had stopped. We first stopped at a very old church for a look around at the old architecture and painting inside. After that, when we popped up to the castle, it was already full of visitors, so we changed things up a little. We walked through the gardens and trails through the woods. It was a great walk with many trees, streams and ponds. As we rounded the ... read more

Here are some of the accounts written by our students of their weekend with their host families. I will post more as I get them, but this should be a good start. I just thought it would be fun for you to be able to see what all of the kids are up to over here. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Over the weekend I did a lot of swimming. On Saturday we went swimming for six hours at ,,Die Insel'' with Shelby and Maren. On Sunday we went to the Baltic Sea with Shelby and Maren. When we got there we went swimming at the swimming hall in the center, for three hours. After that we went to the beach, but it was too cold to swim. Later a thunderstorm started so we went home. Thats my weekend!! Shayla ... read more

I spent the majority of the weekend in the downtown area as all of our kids are out and about with their host families. On Saturday, I made my way via S-Bahn to the city center. I spent the day scouting points for our "Amazing Race" and viewing the sights. It was a very warm day, and I spent a lot of time on foot in between stints public transportation, which is EXCELLENT here in Hamburg. I made my way by train, on the tube, by bus and by water taxi, which is all covered on one 5 Euro ticket! Today my host family took me to the German Emigration museum. It was very cool to see "the other side" of American immigrants. People came from all over Europe to Hamburg for various reasons. Here they ... read more

What a couple of days! Thursday we toured a museum that detailed the history of Hamburg. From its beginnings as a small settlement through its rise to prominance as a trading mecca. From pirates to nearly burning down in 1842, to a city of 2 million people today. The docent did her best to give the tour in english, and for that we were all grateful! After the guided tour, we walked a couple of blocks to the church of St. Michael, where we climbed the tower for excellent views of the city. It was a very hot and humid day, much more humid than any I have experienced in Washington. Nevertheless, Jeff Bajema took it upon himself to run up the entire 200 steep steps of the tower not once, but three times! I'm thinking ... read more
