Normally I wouldn't mention this, but things didn't go as smoothly as I would have liked them to have done. After Stockholm I decided to head back to Scotland for just under 2 weeks before then flying homeward to Canada. I did a lot of searching for cheap flights, and could have flown from an airport near Stockholm called Skavsta for about 50 euro, but that airport was 70Km south of the city, and I wanted cheaper. With one day to spare on my Eurail pass and did some more looking at cities with airports and are inside one day of travel. Turns out I could fly from Hamburg to Glasgow for 15 euro, good deal, best I could get. I grabbed it. With my flight booked for 10:30am takeoff on the 15th, I left Stockholm ... read more

Speaking of which, yes, they call those foods those things here, too, plus there's a tasty cookie called an Amerikaner just to keep things balanced. The last two days we've had a fantastic time seeing Hamburg. First, I must say Drea's family are as wonderful as she is. Even though her kids (aged 7 and 10) speak slightly less English than I speak German, this wasn't a problem for long. I took a wild guess at gifts and brought them each a Mariners baseball cap and an origami kit, which were bigger hits than I could have imagined. Little Lars attached himself firmly to me on all of our outings (I don't really understand this kids-liking-me thing, but once I get over the shock I find I enjoy it) and sometimes practiced his English, sometimes babbled ... read more

Today I got to see the city of Hamburg, in northern Germany. It is a LOT like my hometown of Seattle. Hamburg was a "free" city for many years, which means it was not controlled by any king or government. It was a member of the Hanseatic League, with many other European port cities that traded freely with each other. They are still very proud of this today. We took a ride on the harbor ferry and saw lots of huge container ships and cranes, just like home, as well as cruise ships and really pretty scenery. Afterwards, we walked along the harbor, then took a trip through the "Elbtunnel" which passes underneath the river we were just cruising on. The tunnel has giant elevators for CARS to get down to the tunnel and then back ... read more

Four days in Hamburg meeting up with two old friends from Mannheim followed by two days of project work. 30/10/2004 German Efficiency Well, as typical of German efficiency, the whole trip went like clockwork. The plane landed on time, I switch on my phone and immediately receive a text message from Rene saying that he and George are at the coffee bar opposite the arrivals area. There are no queues at immigration so I wonder straight out and there they are. Try that at Heathrow! Hamburg Hamburg is a port town which sits on the River Elbe. The first thing we saw was the docks at Landungsbrücken (landing bridge) with cranes and ships along the river's edge. Also in the area is the old tunnel across the river, a lift takes you down to the alter ... read more

Date: 25.10.2004 Destination: Hamburg, Deutschland Day: 1 - 4 It was a 4 days Exkursion Trip to Hamburg, or what we call it "Lawatan Sambil Belajar". I really don't feel like going after learning that it is to visit factory, research depatment or Company but as I never been to Hamburg, I thought why not? The people going consist mostly Germans, just some of us Asians. First visit, to the DB Research Plant for High-Speed Train before reaching Hamburg. It was interesting, if only I know that deep Deutsch. We learn how they use magnetic field to move the train fast. But the lunch by the company was tasty. Too bad those Malays can't eat because of Puasa. Ha.. Then we continue to Hamburg. The most interesting things about Germans are they must stop for a ... read more

Sprechen Sie Englisch?" (Do you say English?)"Ich komme aus Hong Kong."(I come from Hong Kong.) "Ich kenne wenig Deutsch!" (I know a bit of... read more

Day 8 (Editors note: prior to Day 8 my journal was written in point form with the intention to rewrite it once I returned to civilisation. The previous evening and sequential conversation with Veronica and Melanie caused me to rethink my personal objective as a traveller and as a writer. From this day forth I wrote in long-form. As previously noted this journal has altered from the original but the concepts, thoughts, opinions, activities etc. are pretty much the same.) Good morning world. Don't you just love dope? One can fry their brain with a few jolly j's until the smell and flavour of eggs is emitted from ones ears and be guaranteed that they will never be bedridden with gut rot from a bad batch of skunky draft. Nope. Smoking that leafy green substance accented ... read more
