I reached the train station and found that I had an hour to spare before my train was due so I took to the streets to see what sights I could find nearby. Luckily for me, York is a beautiful clean city full of friendly people, you only need to board a bus for five minutes before you notice the difference between here and London. As it was a Sunday, I could here a church bell ringing continuously and decided to follow the sound to see what I could find. Exiting the station and following part of the city walls which run through the modern day city, the first thing I came to was the War Memorial Garden close to the river bank and sat there for a while. After that and still hearing the bells ... read more

Five days in the South Western English county of Cornwall After 5 hours+ in the car, we finally arrived in Perrenporth, picked up the key to our accommodation and dumped our bags. Perrenporth is a small seaside town on the north coast of Cornwall close to Newquay with a beach area, rocky cliffs, surfing and the other usual seaside pleasures. Unlike other coastal towns, it's small size and lack of fame makes it less crowded. However, a car is needed if you are going to visit the other famous sites in Cornwall. Our first evening was spent taking a walk around the town, seeing the sundial (set at Cornish time) and eating traditional fish and chips, nothing can beat fresh cod caught the same morning! After a much needed night's sleep, it was back in the ... read more

A eight day visit to Slovenia in the north of former Yugloslavia. Slovenia is a beautiful country full of dense unspoilt forests, clear emerald streams and charming towns and villages set in a backdrop of towering mountains. Ljubljana Our flight took us to Ljubljana, a tiny capital city by London standards. Virtually everything can be reached on foot including the various squares (Trgs), the triple bridge and the castle at the top of Ljubljanski Grad. Ljubljana is also a very cycle friendly city with cycle lanes and virtually no traffic so we borrowed bikes from our hotel and made for the Tivoli mansion and park passing the countries parliament, National Museum and Art Gallery on the way. Piran Slovenia is virtually landlocked with only about 40km of coastline sandwiched between Italy and Croatia. Although only 113km ... read more

November 2nd 2004

Four days in Hamburg meeting up with two old friends from Mannheim followed by two days of project work. 30/10/2004 German Efficiency Well, as typical of German efficiency, the whole trip went like clockwork. The plane landed on time, I switch on my phone and immediately receive a text message from Rene saying that he and George are at the coffee bar opposite the arrivals area. There are no queues at immigration so I wonder straight out and there they are. Try that at Heathrow! Hamburg Hamburg is a port town which sits on the River Elbe. The first thing we saw was the docks at Landungsbrücken (landing bridge) with cranes and ships along the river's edge. Also in the area is the old tunnel across the river, a lift takes you down to the alter ... read more

These are my recollections of my time in Germany as I complete an internship during the summer of 2004. Read on as I recount stories of my travels, experiences and mistakes... Visitied: * Mannheim * Ladenburg * Heidelberg * Heddesheim * Stuttgart * Aachen * Cologne * Hockenheim * Hamburg 19/8/2004 In Deutschland I made it to my house in Germany after a journey consisting of every mode of transport possible: Car, plane, train, tram and finally foot! I am now living in a town called Mannheim and working in the nearby town of Ladenburg. So far, life here has been good, the transport system actually works as expected, and the people are really great, so friendly and happy to help. My German has also improved, I’ve picked up quite a lot of words in the ... read more

10 days in Italy staying in Rome for 5 nights before moving to Florence for another 3 and ending in Pisa with a visit to Pompeii, a drive through Naples and a quick stop in Sorrento. Rome The city founded by the twins Romulus and Remus is full of famous tourist sites and follow the tourist trial we did, seeing all the usual sites: The Roman Forum, The Colosseum, The Vatican City and Sistine Chapel, The Trevi Fountain and The Spanish Steps. For someone from London, the centre of Rome is small and everything is easily reachable by foot. The Roman forum is nice, it doesn't cost to enter the area and visitors are free to wander around the remains. The area is actually quite large and there's a lot to see. Pompeii Pompeii was buried ... read more
