Berlin... is soo rad.. instead it should be called really old beautiful place where if you dont speak german or arab you have a huge language barrier that makes you laugh every 3 seconds and angry everyone inbetween. Yesterday was our first day.... and we conquered our stupid jetlag by staying up on the plane, talking alot and forcing the evil tired eye syndrome away. anyway... yesterday we did alot of laughing at people.. getting free drinks and chocolate... finding our way through huge airports and trying to keep ourselves entertained. We took the U-baun and some some sketchy people then came to uncle randy's place. which is sooo beautiful!!! it is very old.. and big and decorated like egyptianish... i love it... you would to.. whoever you are. today kat and i woke up at ... read more

Hey everyoooooooneeeeeee!! Today brit and i went and walked around the area. The weather felt like edmonton but kind of muggy. Everything is really clean here. Almost everyone owns a bike!Theres no TV in the apartement we just realized, they dont own a clothes dryer and they have 3 separate garbages here. Also the fridge is in the cubboard!! And the milk smells wierd. the butter is amazing. Brit and i made our first box of kraft dinner today, it was great, im so glad we brought some! So during our walk today, we went into a lot of clothing stores and we were pretty much dying. We wanted sooooo many things but we figured we're going to finish here so we'll buy it when we get back, if we have money left over!! Brit and ... read more

Ok...so Berlin is amazing. Everything about it is unique, and it is totally different from everywhere else we've been. It feels like a european city, but the visual history is limited since so much of the city has been destroyed so many times. The people are probably the friendliest we've encountered yet, which was very unexpected, but obviously very welcome. It's really not a city I could ever really see myself settling in though, because the history really does give it a permanently very eery feeling. Our first day in town we took a free (!!!) city walking tour which was amayzing. It was basically an extremely condensed 3.5 hour history lesson. I won't go into details cause seriously it would take me forever, but the highlights (probably all spelled wrong cause I don't have any ... read more

Well today is our last day in Berlin for the time being. Im glad we are coming back here in a months time to catch our flight becuase i would like to see more of it. John and I have used Berlin as a sort of rest period, which was very much needed but i havnt gotten as involved in this city as i would have liked. We did a free tour yesturday which was really fantastic, guided by a very enthusiastic american girl which really helped get us involved and brave the cold and rain. We saw the wall, the site of the book burning, stood above hitlers bunker and saw the underground hideout of the SS and gestapo. Due to the weather we invested in a couple of umbrellas. By the end of the ... read more

Our trip began on a train that took far too long to depart from the station. I was told that European trains had a very set time table and were very close to NEVER late. From the experiences we've had thus far I can say that apparently this fact isn't true. Emily and I were actually running a little late to the train station this time and were definitely speed walking to find the platform, train, and a place to sit before departing. Once we sat down both of us were feeling a bit sweet-toothish but because we didn't have time to stop somewhere before boarding we decided to look for the food car on board but were stopped by the sleeper car nazi who wouldn't let us through becuase in order to get to the ... read more

After spending most of yesterday at Berlin-Tegel airport we have sorted out what we are doing for the next month. We are still in Berlin, we had to go to the airport because Lufthansa don't have an office in the city. Originally we were to leave berlin today and spend just under 4 weeks in Scandinavia and then fly to Thailand. Now we leave Berlin in exactly 1 month from today but in the meantime we will travel around central Europe on train. After Berlin we head to Munich and Stuttgart. Then on the train we head towards Budapest, Hungary, perhaps via Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Austria. After Hungary we will head to Krakow, Poland via Slovakia. Then back to Berlin to get the plane to Denmark where will spend 5 days. Then Sweden for 5 days. ... read more

In the words of John F. Kennedy Ich Bin Ein Berliner (I Am A Berliner), well atleast until the weekend. We arrived in Berlin on Sunday and have been staying in a very cool hostel in the centre of town. After 10 weeks of solid travelling, sightseeing and yes, drinking, we have used the past few days as an oppurtunity to take a well earned rest, well atleast from the travelling and sightseeing :) The past fews days have been filled with reading, playing guitar and sitting in the cafe drinking coffee. Very relaxing. Anyway since there is not much to report I thought this would be a good oppurtunity to put some photos up (we have around 600)... read more

Today Ange and I hit practically all of the sights that Berlin can boast, except for the museums. We decided that museums weren't going to be quite as interesting and as we quickly found out, I had to depend on Ange for translating quite a bit of the info at the other major sights so going through entire museums would have been a bit much. However, we did exhaust our feet on this trip and the following should explain why. The tallest building that I've ever seen is Germany's massive TV tower. It is a staggering 168 metres tall and the ball at the top is 6 stories high. Painted up with the T Mobile colors it was a giant pink and white soccer ball (the 2006 World Cup is being hosted by Germany). We then ... read more

Ange and I headed off to Germany, the land of bratwurst, currywurst and all other wursts, leaving Nott'm EMA and arriving in Berlin Schonefeld around 10pm. We hopped onto one of the ever cool S bahn trains to get to our hostel. The trains in Germany are awesome! and we made great use of the tracks. Arriving at our hostel (Generator Hostel Berlin) was a bit of a feat because we took the long route. However the long route proved interesting as a very drunk man was aimlessly walking on the other side of the street (a great big wide 4 lane street) yelling and cussing at the trees and cars. It was quite entertaining but not enough to merit us sticking around, as we rapidly walked the mile or so to our hostel. We found ... read more

The next stop on our spring break adventure was Berlin. The great part about german cities is that they're all little monuments to how badly we beat their ass back in the day. Good news for them though, we cleared out plenty of room for 'em to build some great modern architecture. So, Berlin turned into our version of being responsible architecture students. We fulfilled this agreement to ourselves thoroughly I must say. I'm not sure I've drank less in any two other consecutive days than the ones spent in Berlin. That's not to say we didn't have a blast. To the contrary, the adreneline frenzy that the uber-dorky architecture half of my brain was blasted into had me runnin' circles. I didn't even sleep. Anyway, I'm all excited about it again just talking about it ... read more
