Exams have ceased to rule my life now!! So excited. However, it is also a sad day because people have already started to leave. :( Deborah and Cynthia left last week for Italy (I so totally wanted to go with them but my stubborn lecturer wouldn't let me write an essay rather than sitting the exam). They seem to have had an interesting time sleeping in airports and such because the hostel had overbooked. I won't have that problem, hopefully, when I get to Italy in 2 DAYS TIME!! It's T-38 hrs for me to be in Roma, Italia. I have very high hopes for this trip to be an amazing adventure. I'm taking a Contiki tour of Italy for 10 days. I am going on the tour by myself but seriously plan on making a ... read more

This past weekend Flaze rocked Women's Outdoor Nationals, taking 2nd place behind Leeds' Jedi. Our team was on fire (literally, thanks to my handy stenciling skills) and it showed. Flaze, a combined team of Loughborough's Haze and Nottingham's Random Fling, were strong, witty and had a blast of a weekend. Heading up Friday night was a great plan, considering that we played 4 straight games on Saturday. On the Friday night we had a little mixer of spraypainting our kit in a car park and generally having a blast. We also had matching visors which was really fun. Saturday was really really hot (for England at least) and we definitely felt it, using some sunscreen (the first time all year!!) and sweating lots. We lost our first game against Shimmy but came back to beat the ... read more

April 25th 2006

As it is my 21st birthday, I continued to do my typical Tuesday routine. A bit lame for some people, but at least it kept me busy. So I went to class, which was a bit boring but not too bad and then hung out with Amy at Rutland. We scarfed down our lunch and then headed off to our seminar which was incredibly dull as usual. There's just something about that class which makes the seminars so incredibly tedious. Afterwards I decided that I wasn't going to do any work because that's just no fun on your birthday, plus I had gone to 2 hours of class already and that was the extent of school for the day. Yay! While the day of my birthday was a bit boring, the night adventures were much better. ... read more

Wandering around Berlin

Today Ange and I hit practically all of the sights that Berlin can boast, except for the museums. We decided that museums weren't going to be quite as interesting and as we quickly found out, I had to depend on Ange for translating quite a bit of the info at the other major sights so going through entire museums would have been a bit much. However, we did exhaust our feet on this trip and the following should explain why. The tallest building that I've ever seen is Germany's massive TV tower. It is a staggering 168 metres tall and the ball at the top is 6 stories high. Painted up with the T Mobile colors it was a giant pink and white soccer ball (the 2006 World Cup is being hosted by Germany). We then ... read more

Ange and I headed off to Germany, the land of bratwurst, currywurst and all other wursts, leaving Nott'm EMA and arriving in Berlin Schonefeld around 10pm. We hopped onto one of the ever cool S bahn trains to get to our hostel. The trains in Germany are awesome! and we made great use of the tracks. Arriving at our hostel (Generator Hostel Berlin) was a bit of a feat because we took the long route. However the long route proved interesting as a very drunk man was aimlessly walking on the other side of the street (a great big wide 4 lane street) yelling and cussing at the trees and cars. It was quite entertaining but not enough to merit us sticking around, as we rapidly walked the mile or so to our hostel. We found ... read more

London to Dublin

London: I caught a very early coach to London from Nott'm to meet up with Charlotte and Jessica (her travel partner) for a few hours of fun. We grabbed some grub from EAT. and then checked out St Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London by way of Tower Bridge. We passed by the Clink Museum and took a look around the Britain at War Exhibit which was pretty cool. They then got me to the station to catch a train to Stansted for my flight to Dublin to meet up with Mom, Jim and Grandma for a 2 week fun-filled tour of the Emerald Isle. Dublin: Mom and Jim picked me up from the airport and we stayed the night at the Fitzwilliam Guesthouse (it was a bit illegal but it worked). :) ... read more

...was where I found myself for outdoor regionals this past weekend. It was an amazing and awesome weekend playing some great outdoor frisbee and generally having fun, despite the wind, slanted pitches and a few bumps and bruises. Saturday saw everyone getting up incredibly early to drive the couple hours to Witney, near Oxford for the first day of regionals. The tourney was hosted by Oxford Uni and was held at the Cokethorpe School. The school grounds were sooo cool!!! It used to be an old manor house with extensive grounds, which when you walked through was like walking through the inner bailey of a castle, or as Biscuit remarked, like walking through a French village. It was just an amazing setting, complete with a flock of sheep grazing nearby. Very picturesque. Game recap: Our first ... read more

February 26th 2006

Sitting in my room listening to Simon and Garfunkel, procrastinating once again, I've decided to update everyone on past events and awesome future plans. So here goes.... I gave my only seminar presentation for the semester on Thursday, which went really well I think. We were the first in our seminar group to go and after a scary and shaky start we actually pulled it together and really knew what we were talking about. Amazing, isn't it? The topic was pretty interesting as well: sexuality and asceticism in 6th century Europe. This weekend Nott'm hosted University Women's Indoor Nationals (UWIN) for frisbee. I went to watch on Saturday morning, since I wasn't playing in the tourney, and the girls did a really good job. I don't know how they fared overall but Saturday they were well ... read more

Quest for Culture

February 12th 2006

In talking to other international students the number one question asked after one finds out which country you hail from is what the culture is like, in order to compare to what they understand as culture from home. Well, I've found that there's a problem in answering this question with the answer close to being "I don't know" until one actually stops to ponder if there actually is a culture and how do I find it. For the US it seems that there isn't one overarching culture that can describe such a vast landscape of different peoples. And in addition to that, since the nation is relatively new compared to the rest of the world (excluding Australia and other new nations) that it hasn't had enough time perhaps to distinguish one separate culture that defines the ... read more

February 10th 2006

As a lot of international friends continue to catch flights home, we begin to attend numerous bon voyage parties and get-togethers. Thus it was the case, although for the second and perhaps for a third time, when Tarishi was headed back to Melbourne, Australia. In honor of her departure, a few of us got together and headed to Wagamama's, a fantastic Japanese noodle restaurant unique unto itself, and to which most of the Aussie's had not yet experienced. We talked and observed and ate some delicious food. However, Kateri's food was incredibly late so we all tried to eat rather slowly (we were told to so our food wouldn't get cold) until her food arrived. Stuffed on some great food, lots of water or green tea, we still felt we had room for dessert. Afterall, it ... read more
