Arrived in Munich quite late last night so didn't blog yesterday. The day day spent travelling from Chamonix to Munich via Geneva. The leg from Chamonix to Geneva airport was with Mountain Drop Offs a company that offers airport to hotel and visa versa service. Very professional and very good so that was pretty easy. From Geneva airport to Geneva again easy thanks to extremely helpful airport staff and good Swiss rail. Cheap and efficient. From station to bus station was only 5 short blocks but from the calm efficiency of the rail station it was back 50 years to the no service no frills bus parking yard. The toilets were portaloo things and were about Egyptian pyramid pharmacy standard (Lee will remember that toilet!) and the rest of the facilities were correspondingly either non existent ... read more

Sunday morning, we left at 8 after a nice buffet breakfast. We headed through Germany to reach Munich for a short stop. It rained all the way there. We did get some fog, but it made the green countryside really beautiful. One of the striking things I saw was a large parking structure built over the highway for the airport near Stuttgart. Good idea for saving space. I have noticed in Germany that their are more American stores and services. We’ve passed Shell Gas Stations, Burger Kings, McDonald’s, Starbucks, and even a John Deere factory and showroom. So far every shop I’ve been in they have been able to speak English, very well at times. Munich, Bavaria’s capital, is home to centuries-old buildings and numerous museums. The city is known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration and ... read more

Train to Munich and another Harry Potter carriage, this time with 6 seats all to ourselves the whole way, was awesome I could put all the armrests up and really stretch out. Arrived in Munich early afternoon, managed to walk past our hotel without seeing it, walked about 10 minutes before working out we had missed it retraced our steps and it was a 30 second walk from the train station....idiots! Checked in and was advised that not only was our room ready but we had scored a luxury upgrade.....YAY! The room is huge the bed is huge and it has a big mustard coloured leather chair that Stephen would like to put in his suitcase if he could fit it! Unpacked and headed out to explore, I'm not sure if it's because it's Friday afternoon ... read more

Saturday, 15th April 2017 By day 3, the temperatures in Germany had plummeted to freezing point. We were decked in clothing that would otherwise be befitting for winter. As usual, we woke up at 6am in the morning, feeling really cold while making a trip to the Schloss Nymphenburg (Summer Palace). Located some blocks west of Central Munich, the easiest way to commute to the grounds was via Tram # 17 from the train station. Our tram was near empty as we occupied prime seats at the rear of the vehicle which commanded a grand vista of the streets. The Palace occupied a secluded spot at the end of the gardens. Even getting close to the building required quite a walk from the tram stop. We stopped frequently, taking loads of panoramic pictures of the beautiful ... read more

Friday, 14th April 2017 Rise and shine. After a good sleep at Aloft, we were very well-rested. Even though it was only 6am when we woke up this morning, we were feeling energetic as we made our way to the train station for breakfast. It was a simple bread and coffee affair @ Le Crobag which we went on to patronise a couple of times during the course of our stay in Europe. The weather was chilly and while it wasn't raining, the sky was shrouded with grey clouds as we made our way to the Dachau Concentration Camp later in the morning. Getting there via the S6 Bahn and the connecting bus at Dachau Station was a straight forward affair. Within 45 minutes, we had arrived at the doorsteps of Dachau - the first concentration ... read more

Thursday, 13th April 2017 Spring 2017 European City Breaks The trip started more than 12 hours ago when my flight finally landed at Munich Airport at 6.55am on Thursday. I was dead tired from the flight and the bad news was that I had plenty of time to kill at the airport as H would not arrive before 12pm today. While claiming my baggage at the carousel, he messaged that he had just missed his connecting flight at Heathrow. Munich Airport was simply not the best place to while the 5 hours away. I divided my time across Mcdonalds, the EDEKA Supermarket and sorting out the directions and ticket machines so that we could simply make our way to the Bahn Station as soon as H arrived! Anyway, H managed to appear at the Arrivals sometime ... read more

Oh Munich. I feel you got a bit shafted (cheated - for my non-slang crew, i,e: Mom in case you are actually reading this). I feel I had too much going on before I got to Germany and then Germany was a bit go, go go at first. By the time I got to Munich I was mentally done with the tourist part of traveling. Additionally, history can be pretty depressing. How do people major in this??? Let's hit the highlights shall we. Germany trip went like this: Leichlingen, Dusseldorf, Koln, Berlin & Munich. Which really doesn't sound like much, unless you take the travel in between cities into account. And the fact that I did a lot in Italy before getting to Germany. So where we last left off I was in Berlin and loving ... read more

And finally, I am able to start all the European blogs. Once the little guy arrived Europe was just a little more attractive from a flight perspective (7 - 8 hours versus 15 plus for Asia) to fly to Europe. And for some reason it seems that our European travels always went through and used Germany as a starting point. So, we have been to Germany many times, but have spent very little time there. Our first time was when we decided to do an Austria/ Germany trip. I think it was July (just an absolutely stupid expensive time for tickets from the US to anywhere) so I think an Austria/ Germany trip became a reality simply because tickets were too expensive anywhere else. Initially I was planning something closer to the Swiss border for operas, ... read more
