Yes, you can surf in Munich, and I don't mean on the WWW. There's a point where one channel of the Isar comes running out of a tunnel and creates a standing wave. When I stumbled on it today there were 6 or 7 people in wetsuits taking turns surfing on it. The best ones were able to stay up for several passes back and forth across the wave before bailing. This welcome break came in the middle of a day devoted to museums. Man, does Munich have a lot of great museums! It helps that the city was the capital of a large, wealthy kingdom for several hundred years. The Wittelsbachs, the royal family, loved to build huge buildings to house all the goodies they bought or were "given". I'm back on my own for ... read more

I left the sunny Mediterranean world, and temperatures in the mid-30s, yesterday for cool, rainy Germany. A bit of a shock! It was great to see brother Dave at the airport - our flights arrived at almost the same time. We picked up our bikes - they're a bit clunky, but should be OK for riding along the Danube. We decided to stay a second night in Munich before starting the ride, since Sunday was forecast to be pretty wet (and, as I write, it's coming down pretty hard). Call us wimps, but we didn't fancy getting soaked on the first day of riding! We'll start out retracing some of the route Lynn and I rode in 1987. When I looked at the map I found I even remembered the names of a couple of the ... read more

Gretchen has all the logistics of getting to and from Munich worked out. It is another beautiful day and we can keep the summer theme going with appropriate clothes for temperatures in the high 20’s again. We must say that almost everywhere we have been on the BBA V3 the public transport system that has been available to take us places we don’t really want to take the car too has been outstanding. There have been buses in the most remote places we have been, and there have been a few of those. And trains haven’t been too far behind. Today we are taking a bus to Wolfrathausen which is about 5 kilometres away and then the S Bahn train to the central station in Munich. There seemed to be at least half a dozen bus ... read more

Monday was supposed to be the day we toured the concentration camp at Dachau. Unfortunately, with all our research about how to get there from hostel and what to see there and in Munich, we missed the fact that the camp, and many other museums in Munich, is closed on Mondays. We were seriously bummed, but it gave me a chance to reflect on some ideas sparked by a temporary exhibit we saw at the Verzetsmuseumin Amsterdam. “World War 2 Today” by the Dutch photographer Roger Cremens, documents the particular and peculiar, ways Americans and Europeans interact with the sites and events of the Second World War. His photographs include reenactors staging various maneuvers, re-creating an US Army medical field station (complete with casualties and corpses), and visiting a classroom to do a show-and-tell for school ... read more

In the day, Portsmouth had the 6.57 crew. A cold, grey morning in Northern Bavaria dawned and we became the 7.07 crew. The bus rolled up early and we were well ahead of schedule to the Nurnberg Hauptbahnhof to secure our Bayern ticket for the 8.10 to Munich. The Bayern “Bavaria” ticket was not aptly named. We were TSV 1860, en route to the Allianz Arena for the game against Saint Pauli. The ticket is however one of Europe’s great transport bargains with prices from a mere 27 Euros for all day train travel anywhere in Bavaria. The ticket allows up to 4 more additional passengers to be added for a mere 3 Euros each. The local transport in cities such as MVV in Munich and VGN in Nurnberg is also included. The catch? Geo: 48.1391, 11.5802We've had a very long day, but everything went on schedule and as planned. It is good to finally get to the hotel in Athens. It was nearly midnight by the time we got to the room. We left home about 9:30 a.m. CDT yesterday going from ABQ to IAH, spending three hours on a layover there, flying on to Munich for a ten-hour layover, then on to Athens. Our wonderful travel agent, Paula Kay, arranged for a car service to pick us up at the airport and take us to the King George Hotel on Syntagma Square. The driver was great, spoke English, and pointed out a few points of interest along the way which took about thirty minutes. When we arrived at the hotel, the desk clerk greeted us by name.
