Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Our assult on Munchen coincided with a gigantic lesbian street festival, highlighting the party vibe you'd expect from ze crazy Germans. We quickly assimilated, scoffing bratwurst and swilling Lowenbraus in the street surrounded by The Village People lookalikes and a host of latexed and feathered friends. Dinner involved a rowdy bier hall complete with a totally German menu and a menapausal bier wench. Thank god for the friendly locals and their exceptional translation skills. Hello! We are typing to you from Munich, Germany! We left Prague yesterday and were definitely sad about it. The first night we were there we met Ryan, from Coronado! It was so refreshing to be able to make San Diego references and have them be understood by someone. Then we met a couple, Lera and Mike, who were from the Bay Area and it turns out they went to school at UC Davis with Ryan! Small world. Hi everyone, After lots of fun in Köln tonight I made myself to sitdown and write my blog about Munich. On friday 11th of July we headed to München . My thoughts on waking up: "Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, we're going to Salzburg today!!!!!!!". We couldn't get to Austria without changing trains in Munich though, so naturally, we couldn't resist the opportunity to spend a couple of hours exploring the city before moving onto Salzburg. A hang gliding adventure one day after the engagment? Coincidence? John decided that it would be an awesome idea to jump off the side of the mountain and I was going whether I liked it or not. Beer and Sausages Galore

After doing one days sightseeing we headed from Venice up to Munich through the picturesque Austrian Alps by train. Upon arrival at the Munich Central Station we were greeted by the sight of Germany's High Speed trains called ICE which look and go pretty damn fast. Also jetzt muss ich die Zeit nutzen um einen weiteren Eintrag zu schreiben. Alle die es noch nicht wissen: Nein ich bin noch nicht in Südamerika. Ich sitze am Flughafen in München und langweile mich sehr. Aber alles nach der Reihe ... Gestern nach einem gemütlichen Essen mit Familiy und Freunden ging es am Abend zum Flughafen nach Linz. Munich Beer Hall
Just what Steve was waiting for!

Munich was the land of large food and larger beer - just the way Steve likes it! We went on a really interesting walking tour and saw were Hitler and his 3rd Reich began. We wandered around the Marienplatz (town square) and watched the Glockenspiel with the life-sized figures dance aruond the clock. So I made it; at least to Munich. I’m waiting to board my flight to Florence. The flight over here wasn’t all that bad. I sat next to a Greek gentleman, and that was interesting, to say the least. But I do have to say that I had the best seat: 33K, a window seat right next to the wing. It was the perfect seat for my first international flight. And I do have to say Lufthansa is awesome. MARTA LOVES MUNICH doo dah doo dah It;s one of those places that really suprises you. I didn't hear that much about it beforehand and was a tad apprehensive about going there because of Dachau and it's potential resonance with the people but I'm so glad we did we had a ball!!! Hofbrauhaus was one of the most fun places I've been to, despite weird poms shelling out free hugs and a Hulk Hogan look-a-like from Gundegai, Ally drank litre radlers and I litre beers so we've the beer thing down pat.
