Arrived in Munich quite late last night so didn't blog yesterday.
The day day spent travelling from Chamonix to Munich via Geneva. The leg from Chamonix to Geneva airport was with Mountain Drop Offs a company that offers airport to hotel and visa versa service. Very professional and very good so that was pretty easy. From Geneva airport to Geneva again easy thanks to extremely helpful airport staff and good Swiss rail. Cheap and efficient. From station to bus station was only 5 short blocks but from the calm efficiency of the rail station it was back 50 years to the no service no frills bus parking yard. The toilets were portaloo things and were about Egyptian pyramid pharmacy standard (Lee will remember that toilet!) and the rest of the facilities were correspondingly either non existent or just as poor. The coach did however leave only 5 minutes early(yes early) and it was pretty good although it did have a toilet on board that stunk. Anyone brave or silly enough to use it came out looking worse than when they went in! We stopped in the most out of the way, desolate parking zones imaginable but we did make it
to Munich in the time stated. This was despite the fact we stopped every couple of hours for what could only be described as a compulsory cigarette smoking session, Julie and I said we didn't comprehend and were hence the only ones not smoking.
We arrived late in Munich but knowing we had accommodation that was booked and not far away made us pretty comfortable. We are not in the prettiest area (unless you like strip clubs!) but it is still safe and really close to the train station which we need in a couple of days. We have been spoilt lately with excellent breakfasts (fruit, yoghurt, cheeses, meats, breads, pastries...) so it was a rude shock to run on empty until we could get some pastries today mid way through the first of our walking tours. I'm full of those fascinating facts and stories you pick up from a guided tour so maybe I feel a quiz coming on soon. Julie and I did the walking tour, 3 hours around the old town which was pretty good then signed on for another 3 hours in the afternoon for a tour specialising in the Third Reich which although hardly
riveting for 100% of the time certainly raised some fascinating stories and ideas. To see the cafe that Hitler drank coffee in is a spooky sort of sensation. The talk was laced with photo evidence and to stand in the exact spot that this events took place was quite surreal at times. So 2 tours on it was beer oclock. We had to be at the beer garden quite early and you can see we weren't alone. But the beer and the pork knuckle were good. I plan to go agaIn tomorrow as there are a few dishes that were tempting and I'm certain they won't run of beer! Big steins that hold a litre and the beer is very good make for a great combination.
I think it's hop on hop off bus today tomorrow but I don't think Julie is that keen. We will see, it's not vital we go together.
Anyway until tomorrow. Guten nacht.
