Day 2 - Planes, trains, automobiles and very little sleep It’s kind of hard to figure out where Day 1 ends and Day two begins. By the time we landed in Philadelphia we were tired. With only a couple hours of sleep and traveling we were exhausted and tired. At this point during the travels you start to read each other a little bit and it was very apparent that we needed food immediately. We walked from the concourse we landed at to concourse A. It was a bit of a walk but it was really an enjoyable walk through the shops that lined each concourse. I love airports. I love people watching. I the journey to get to your destination. We decided on a little restaurant called Chickie’s and Pete’s. We all ordered a Philly ... read more

The day started rather badly, I blame my wife for this. She is a nervous flyer and insisted we stay up drinking late the night before so that she could sleep on the plane. Thus, at 4.30 in the morning I was sat, bleary eyed on the loo, performing my functions and feeling woozy. I have rhinitis and every morning I must blow my nose vigorously to clear my sinuses. Consequently, I was using the toilet paper for… two purposes. My multitasking ability is poor when half asleep and half pissed. I don’t know how the mix-up occurred, but my ablutions were interrupted by a hideous smell. A glance in the mirror confirmed my worst fears; effectively I had shat on my own face. At least I learnt that I don’t suit a moustache. It ... read more

Today we spent the last full day in Germany, driving from Nuremberg to Munich. I dropped my new car off at the transport point at the Munich airport to have it shipped back to the US, in about 8 weeks. While it was a fun experience, I do not think I would do a European delivery again. It was very complicated to set up and the car in Germany did not have all the functions it will have in the US. The car is on it's way back, and Sophie and I are on our way to the second phase of our travels. Tomorrow we fly to Athen for two days and then board the Seabourne cruse which goes from Athens, around the south of Italy eventually to Barcelona the end of June. Lots of fun ... read more

We have been busy the past few days, and apparently also the evenings, as I am very delinquent in updating my blog. Today is Friday, and we are getting ready to leave Munich. Our original plan was to drive to Prague, but in speaking with my ex-boss, Peter Emmert, he suggested that I should not take a new BMW into the Czech Republic and park it somewhere. He advised that while it may be OK, it is just at a greater risk of being stolen since all the immigration has taken place. So we have changed our plans and we will be off to Vienna this morning. On Tuesday, we started the day visiting Dachau in the morning. I have visited several times in the past, but Sophie has never visited a concentration camp. As always, ... read more

auf Wiedersehen, Munich. Jack and I visited the Alte Pinakothek and the Neue Pinakothek gazing at the art of the Old Masters and Immpressionists. One of the Van Gogh Sun Flowers is in the Neue, this was painted as a decoration for Van Gogh's house as he was expecting house guests including Paul Gauguin and he wanted art on the walls to be cheerful for his visitors. Today, we would have run to Home Goods for "wall art"! Our last dinner was at a traditional German restaurant, the Spatenhaus which is across the street from the Munich Opera. We had the pleasure of sharing an upstairs dining room with a Russian couple and their three body guards who at in the other room. #don'tstareattheRussians. Taxi ride back to our hotel. Today we stayed inside the city to experience two really "specific to Munich" sites. First we took the train to Nymphenburg Palace, just outside the city. We wanted to get some walking in and this really fit the bill. Nymphemburg was once summer place of the Wittelsbacher kings and queens when, I guess, it was simply too hot in downtown Munich. After all, it lies a great distance, 8km, from the city center. After taking the train to Rotekreutzplatz, Sophie and I felt like we walked another 8km to get to the palace. But, it is really a spectacular site to visit while in Munich. After living in Munich 4 years and visiting the palace many times, I continue to be amazed at the beauty of the place. We took a long walk around the grounds ... read more

First full day of our European adventure. Arrived in Munich yesterday and today visited the BMW Welt to pick up my new car, to be driven the next 2 weeks and then to be shipped back to the states. We were well treated. I had the luxury of Weiss Wurst and eine Bretze for breakfast, which almost topped the new car. Sophie Knott got to stand near a car she wished she could take home and we took a tour of the BMW Museum. Later in the day we visited with my neighbors from Germany, Margit and Johann Oberhauser, which included a very nice visit to a local Bier Garten for Obatzda and, of course, beer. Super start to our trip.... read more
