Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

(December 8th - 9th) Germany round two! Originally we weren’t planning on coming to Munich (I know I know, it seems to be a running theme now as we get towards the end of the trip, but hey, its nice to have the flexibility to go where we please). But Brian noticed something in the travel book that I had overlooked. What’s funny is that after Brian told me we were going to Munich, I remembered a photo from the very first night I met Roy. He had just returned from his European vacation, and of all the pictures he showed [View Full Entry]

Christmas Wish List

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
So, I’m obviously not going to be around this year for Christmas which is always fun for me finding presents for you all whether it be something you truly need, something you really want, or something you mentioned eight months ago that I happened to jot down so I’d remember. Anyhoo, this is my Christmas Wish List for my family and friends (if you’re not on it, maybe its because I got you something already :) I hope you enjoy your presents: Mom - a market for your jewelry, I know it’s out there, we’ll find it (oh, yeah my mom [View Full Entry]

Even so, after awhile it does get annoying, to the point we turned off sound volume... We nick-named this marvel of technology "Inga". Since there were three of us on this trip, I thought it would be nice for you to read Kate's version of "Inga", the rental car's GPS... "Keith, being Keith, had done an exceptional job of planning the trip. Exceptional. From the places we would go, to where we would stay, and to how we would get there. Guten tag! We arrived in Munich about a month and a half too late to experience the infamous and legendary Oktoberfest, but we managed to have an amazing time regardless. We arrived from Salzburg after a pleasantly short train journey north. We stayed at the Euro Youth Hostel which was recommended to us by Chelsea and Peter (thanks guys!) It was fantastic! On our first day, we checked in and grabbed some food, and then joined up with the free walking tour offered by the same company as the one we went on in Paris. The tour took us around the [View Full Entry]

Ja, in BAVARIA!

That was a Monty Python reference... Needless to say, my journeys with my mother were not over in Switzerland! I had been given the opportunity to see her AND Sarah again, in the new home that the family had sought out in Germany, right near a beautiful lake. I took the opportunity, and no less than 5 days later, I found myself on a train to Munich, with detailed directions on how to get to the Bavarian country side. It involved some travel on the S-Bahn, which was daunting, because I have a history with foreign subway systems: but my hopes [View Full Entry]

The Isar Gate is located between the Isar River and the center of München. The architecture reminds me a little of the American Southwest (i.e. Arizona, New Mexico).

A warm welcome to the city as we stumble upon a great little local spot
A (not so) girly weekend spent in Munich with Joi... After much bratwurst, saurkraut and even a little bier, we made the trek to Dachau concentration camp. A great city break filled with good food, great company and an experience in Dachau that we will never forget... [View Full Entry]

Many, Much, Munich.

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
It felt so good to step off the train into Munich after a long 9 hour train ride from Paris. There were five of us in a compartment trying to comfortably sleep. We arrived early in the morning and our hostel was located just two blocks from the main train station. We stayed in the Jaeger's Hostel, appropriately named after Jaagermeister, a popular German alcohol because upon checking in we received a ticket for a free drink ticket! It was early in the morning, so we dropped off our bags and had the entire day to explore Munich. We walked to [View Full Entry]

Oktoberfest!

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
Hi!! Okay so I'm going to try and get caught up with all my blogs! OKTOBERFEST in Munich was simply wild. We caught an 8AM bus to Munich. It is around an 8 hour bus ride to Munich. We actually almost missed the bus, we had to run for it, but we made it! On the bus, we had one stop - Katie and I went to the bathroom. We also stopped to buy a snickers, so we were walking towards the bus, and it went a little something like this: Susan: Do you remember which one our bus is? Katie: [View Full Entry]

Junkerschule
This Junkerschule building was taken over by the Americans (General Patton) after the war and renamed Flint Kaserne. It was the home of the 10th Special Forces Group and the 7th Army NCO Academy.
Living in Bavaria was a fantastic experience. Most Americans just visit there; I got to spend a couple of years there. Learning to ski was a skill that I could take back to the states with me and turn it into a business! Munich is the technical capitol of Germany and the capitol of Bavaria. I lived south, down the Munich-Saltzburg Autobahn about 30 miles. During the 1960's, the country had just rebuilt itself from the war. Most folks didn't have cars so I was the exception. In 1936, the Nazis built a school for the SS called the Junkerschule; that's [View Full Entry]
