Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Beer, beer and more beer

Oktoberfest Welcome
Oktoberfest Welcome
Opening gate of Oktoberfest
We have busy for the last two days drinking beer! Largely due to Oktoberfest. Munich is a great city with a lot of interesting places and a very efficient, clean subway system. It has taken us only a few minutes to get to a beer garden or Oktoberfest. The beer is amazingly good, cold and cheap! Buffie has an alergic reaction to some bug bite and the only thing that is helping the pain is beer, so we are drinking and siteseeing! We visited at least 3 beer gardens and as two cute girls we were constantly being offered drinks or [View Full Entry]

24 & Cooking School today Jill and Markus must go to the offices, so i had time to rest a little bit, refresh from the last couple of days. Good thing was, that I found some DVDs of the series 24 with Kiefer Sutherland, bad thing was that i can´t stop watching it. After Jill and Markus coming back, we had a late lunch, eating DÖNER. A turkish sandwich. At 6.30 p.m. we are leaving the apartment to drive to a cooking school, learn how to prepeare italian food. [View Full Entry]

We took the train yesterday for 6 hours across Germany to get to Munich. It was good to finally get off the train and see some more things. The train system in Germany is excellent - very well marked and efficient. It is the best train system that we both have ever been on. I do not have a ton to write as we just got in last night. It is overwelming here with all of the festivities around Oktoberfest! Both of us went shopping again last night to a local department store and they have an entire section of the [View Full Entry]

The amazing trip to Ingolstadt today we drove to Ingolstadt to see the Audi Factory, where Markus´ Car was made. We also visited the Museum of Audi (see Pictures). In the factory it was not allowed to take pictures. so we will write you some imformations down. 1. The whole factory is the same size as monaco and more employees then residents of monaco (about 32.000). 2. They produce about 2.300 cars in this factory per day. Audi sell about 1 Million cars per Year. 3. In the Audi Forum - people can pick up their new car. about 60.000 cars [View Full Entry]

Landed in Munich

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
After spending 2 days in airports and paying 15$ for a hamburger in England, I finally arrived in Munich. Wolfgang drove me straight to his place and has basically given me the keys to the city. His house has more than enough room for Ashleigh and it is at least half as much bigger than our house in Canada (which surprised me). Wolfgang lives in a village of about 700 and I"ve already had several Bavarian beers despite being here for only 12 hours. I"ll write a little more later on today or tomorrow! Our Trip to Neuschwanstein

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
Our Trip to Neuschwanstein Today is Tuesday Sept 23 2008. After breakfast we left Munich for a tour of a famous castle "Schloss Neuschwanstein" which is the castle that Walt Disney copied for his theme castle at Disney Land. To get to the castle we had a half an hour walk uphill before viewing the castle. King Ludwig II who built that castle died under mysterious circumstances in the Starnberger Lake. He was a very powerful and rich ruler who built up three castles in Bavaria. Other politicians were upset with him spending so much money on arts and castles. These [View Full Entry]

Up to speed

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
Oktoberfest was crazy, getting there was just as crazy. After leaving London me and P took a quick flight to Dublin. We stayed in a not so great hostel called The Shining, close to the river, maybe a 10min walk to the Temple Bar Area. it's basically a strip of tourist bars. We had a pint in that area, then moved on exploring. We found a couple spots off the strip where the pints were a couple of euro cheaper, so we hung around there instead. we actually went back to one sunday night because they had a live jazz band. This weekend I went to Oktoberfest in Munich Germany. I feel like this one doesn’t need too much explanation of what it is since this is one German Tradition that most Americans have heard about. We all had a great time and in the end only left behind 2 people out of around 15 so I think that our trip was pretty successful. Munich is about a 4 and a half hour train ride from Radolfzell and since we were going to be such a large group round trip it only cost us 10 Euro’s. We all met at 6 in [View Full Entry]

O’zapft is - this means that the first barrel of beer has been opened by the major of Munich, who also speaks the opening words for the Oktoberfest. We have not been to the Oktoberfest for the last 5 years and really have not missed anything. However, when we went last Saturday it was a lot of fun although we had an awful headache the next day! The two weeks in Munich were very short. We travelled through South Germany to visit our friends and Family from Reutlingen to Plattling and back to Munich. We bought additional trekking equipment we were [View Full Entry]
