Denmark Travel Blogs

Denmark is made up of a number of islands in the Baltic Sea, and Jutland, a peninsular north of Germany. Predominantly flat, the highest natural point is only 171 metres above sea level. With a vast coastline, Denmark offers beaches, as well as inland forest areas and vast lakes.

Denmark holds a rich history, from the Vikings to one of the oldest monarchies dating back around 1000 years. In addition to it's traditional towns and cities, Denmark also holds Gothic churches, royal palaces and large manor houses, along with stunning examples of modern architecture. Denmark holds fame for the fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson and every child's favourite toy, Lego.

Shems: I Spent much of the day pruning roses around Kernegaarden (thanks mum, for teaching me how!) whilst Chris hacked at overgrown bramble and cleared all the guttering. We cycled down to the sea side in the afternoon and played cards. In the evening we had a lovely meal with Anita and Kai and their two children: Matilde and Anders as well as Anita's mother. We ate lamb from Kernegaarden, drank wine and were entertained by Anders' fantastic card tricks (we were genuinly astonished at his slight of hand!). We cycled back guided by moonlight, through apple and plum trees both [View Full Entry]

Before
After

Chris: Lazy sunday, lovely. Got up around 10am, then did little bits of housework and then generally bummed around. Went for a walk by the sea, Shems did lots of marooned jellyfish rescuing, whilst I skimmed stones. Walked back into Osterby via one of the old schools on the island, 'Skole Fri' which we later discovered is the home of one of the seemingly numerous British expats. We then walked up and down the main drag, examining all the produce that people trustingly put outside their houses with either a little money box with a slot in it or a note [View Full Entry]

Shems: We were met by Anita at 8am to put up posters by the harbour advertising the organic food market taking place on Fejo today. Unfortunately the weather was just so bad. We had a bit of a storm and it wasn't easy trying to secure a large banner onto a building with sea-winds lifting it up. At one point I tried to help Chris to reach up to secure the cord. My foot-up was a bit useless so Anita rushed over to help, and we ended up lifting him up entirely, one leg each. I was laughing so hard I [View Full Entry]

Chris: Woke up a bit later today and went down to Kernegaarden. Today was a day for odd jobs. I used my new found hedge trimming skills to make short work of the front hedge... compared to Michael and Helle's hedge this was just a small shrubbery. Then we collected some apples, raked fruit from around the trees and cleaned out the furnace. After a good day of hard work we went back to our farmhous. I also managed to get out on my first run of th whole trip and went along the road to the east coast of the [View Full Entry]

Labelling bottles
A sea of plums

Let me tell you why I'm having a great day! I woke up and went for a 4.59 km run. My aunt has signed the two of us up for a 5 km race on Sunday! I had leftover banana pancakes and coffee for breakfast! It is very windy today. It must mean autumn is right around the corner. That's my favorite season! When I got to Nørreport Station I went to the ticket office to inquire about the price of a train to Amsterdam. I asked in Danish and... SHE RESPONDED IN DANISH!! THE WHOLE CONVERSATION OCCURRED IN DANISH!! AND [View Full Entry]

Me on a turtle

Update: I met with my French tutor for the first time today. Total International Language whiplash. I thought of all the numbers in Danish. All the verbs in Spanish. C'est la vie. I have some intense French catch up to do. However, I'm going to love the fact that I get one-on-one instruction once a week...way more helpful and personalized than simply taking a French course. Today's blog will be an activity in discerning Neoclassical Architecture in Medieval Copenhagen. My Copenhagen: History and Current Issues course had an assignment where we had to walk Fiolstræde and find the three bu [View Full Entry]

Shems: Chris woke up at 4.30am to switch the boiler on for our shower two hours later. When we woke up it was nice to see the wood still smouldering in the stove. By 7.30 we were at Kernegaarden ready to start work. Our task for today was to clean the small cider-production area for the new harvest and in time for a talk and tasting at 3pm. We worked hard, scrubbing and brushing the floors and equipment and had a lot of fun using the power-hose. Anita made us a lovely chilli-con carne for lunch, which we had at 11am!! [View Full Entry]

Intro Camp Europe » Denmark » Region Midtjylland » Aarhus
So I have been here for a month, and so far so good. Not much has changed, I still don’t know Danish, but I did go to camp, whish was pretty cool. It was a week long, and there were 150 exchange students there, from all over the world. It was pretty intense to experience like 10 different cultures, but also in like 100 different ways. Ever exchange student is so different and has such a different view on things. But basically were all the same because were going through the same things. I met some people ill probably be [View Full Entry]

Having taken the night train from Stockholm, I arrived in Copenhagen just after 7 a.m., slightly less than rested and refreshed. After waiting for the currency exchange bureau to open, I took a bus over to my hostel, the Rest-in-Green hostel, where I would have a bed in a 32 person dorm room. (This ended up being better than expected, as the beds were set up in 4-person 3-sided cubicles, so while noisy, it didn't feel as crowded as I had expected.) For anyone planning a visit to the city, the location of the hostel was good, about a 20 minute [View Full Entry]
