Denmark Travel Blogs

Denmark is made up of a number of islands in the Baltic Sea, and Jutland, a peninsular north of Germany. Predominantly flat, the highest natural point is only 171 metres above sea level. With a vast coastline, Denmark offers beaches, as well as inland forest areas and vast lakes.

Denmark holds a rich history, from the Vikings to one of the oldest monarchies dating back around 1000 years. In addition to it's traditional towns and cities, Denmark also holds Gothic churches, royal palaces and large manor houses, along with stunning examples of modern architecture. Denmark holds fame for the fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson and every child's favourite toy, Lego.

I would now like to introduce a new section of the blog called TINADAD - Things I've Noticed about Denmark and Danes. (You should pronounce the acronym like Trinidad but without the r.) TINADAD 1: Gas here costs about 9,71 kr/liter. After some simple arithmetic I've discovered that gas costs about 7.25 USD/gallon. Apparently though, the cars are much more fuel-efficient. So one week ago us cool Copenhageners took off on a grass roots adventure in Western Denmark (the Danish equivalent of a New Yorker visiting Kentucky). Here we learned all about rural / less cosmopolitan Denmark and visited the second largest city of Århus (way cool). Embarkation Day - Sunset

Got up, packed, ate breakfast and took a taxi to the ship. We wanted the driver to take us by the "Little Mermaid" so I could get pictures from the front as the canal pictures show her backside. However, he didn understand us and must have thought when we said Mermaid that the ship was named Mermaid as we went straight to the port. The past few days I have been in Western Denmark, aka Jylland again. I got a really bad head cold the day before we left, which was highly unfortunate, but I survived. We left Copenhagen at 7am in the coolest bus i have ever seen. This bus was like a space bus, it had blue track lighting, a full bar in the back with a Heineken tap, like 10 TVs, reclining seats...it was AWESOME. Danmark is amazing! Unskyld for not writing in this before! I have been So busy! I never imagined that being an exchange student could be this time consuming :-P So anyway...I have already done so much, yet it feels like I just got here. Vanaf deze week woon ik officieel in Silkeborg! Dankzij het geweldige instituut dat bureaucratie heet hadden ze er hier in Silkeborg eventjes moeite mee dat ik al was aangekomen, maar per 6 september hebben ze me hier geregistreerd. Om dit te vieren heb ik deze week dan ook mijn eerste echte les in Deens gehad en het gaat meteen al een stuk vooruit. Chris: Today was our final day at Kernegaarden and the idyllic island of Fejoe. It was also the day of the music festival back on Lolland, which Thomas and Gitte organised. Frederiksborg Castle

Got up early and ate breakfast buffet (primarily pastries, meats and cheeses) and then walked to the train station for about a 40 minute ride to Hillerod where we toured the Fredriksborg Castle and chapel. Some amazing and VERY OLD art work. There were 2 weddings and 1 baptism so we walked into a little cafe and got something to eat, which we took back outside and picnicked along side the castle moat. Goats in their plush new pad

Chris: Moved out of our lovely home at Norregard farm and into one of the nice modern apartments at Kernegaarden. The goats also moved house into their new sparkling clean home. Later we Went for a ride to the beach and fished jellyfish, although the intention was to get crabs perhaps for dinner. Shems had a bike fall but dealt with it very calmly and got straight back on her bike. Spent the evening enjoying internet access. [View Full Entry]
