As the old Danny Kaye song goes: “Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen, Friendly old girl of a town, 'Neath her tavern light On this merry night Let us clink and drink one down. To wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen Salty old queen of the sea Once I sailed away But I'm home today Singing Copenhagen, wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen for me. “ Anyway, we’re here in wonderful Copenhagen today. We sailed in and docked about 8:00. One of the first things we noticed as we entered the port were a whole series of wind turbines standing out in the water – apparently generating electricity. We had had a good night’s sleep and we went up to the buffet for breakfast before docking. One of these days, we may try to sit-down breakfast, but this is easier and much ... read more

Landed in Copenhagen at 6:00 am. After breakfast, we checked into the Hilton Hotel. Copenhagen was very easy to navigate. Took quick metro to town center and walked the Strøget. A beautiful sunny afternoon. Feel like our trip has begun.... read more

This weekend we had a lot of free time, which was a nice break from our busy schedule. We started off Saturday morning with our last game against a Danish team and went to watch the boys play afterwards. We spent most of the afternoon in a Hummel store in downtown Arhus where many of us bought handball gear. We then all went for ice cream before heading back to the academy for swimming. After dinner we wandered downtown again where there was a music festival going on, but this time with the boys' team and also the ATHF players that are living in Denmark. We broke off into groups to explore for two hours and then met up at a fountain in the middle of the town by a clock tower where we found to ... read more

Denmark blog #1 The morning of Tuesday, August 13th, the teams arrived at the airport to commence their long journey to Denmark. After 16 hours of airports and airplane rides, the teams finally arrived in Copenhagen. We then boarded a bus to Aarhus, where many games of cards were played and many naps were taken. 10 minutes away from the handball academy one of the bus' tires popped, and we were shortly transferred to a new bus. When we arrived everyone at the academy welcomed us; we were very excited to start our handball academy experience. For supper we enjoyed a delicious chicken dinner prepared by the gourmet chefs here at the academy. That night the girls teams had the opportunity to practice with German coach Jan Lucas. It's safe to say that after practice we ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! The time has finally come! I haven't moved my sorry behind out of this country for almost a year and boy does my feet itch! This time i will finally undertake a backpacking/couchsurfing trip. The destination? Turkey and the Balkans! I've been wanting to do this kind of trip for a long time now but I just never got around to it until now. Most likely because I generally travel together with my friends and none of them have really wanted the couchsurfing experience nor have they really wanted to travel around as widely as I will this time. The schedule is a fairly ambitious one as my goal is to visit eleven countries in twenty days. The countries are Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia ... read more

's ochtends ontwaakten we in alle rust.

Began this morning a little later than usual - with breakfast at 8 and our concert at 10, it was worth sleeping in as late as possible, especially given that our room at the hostel overlooks the (rather noisy) street - people gather out there to smoke, chat, and just generally be noisy when staggering back from bars at 3 in the morning and such. We sang a concert at Vor Frue Kirke (which I believe is Danish for the church of Our Lady... Which seems odd for a Lutheran church, which apparently this was, but I'm guessing it probably has a longer history and that the name is a remnant of that) at noon. The acoustic was incredible. The sound lingered audibly for a stunning amount of time before dissipating, and I sincerely hope that ... read more

This morning we mosied out to Helsingor (Elsinore) to visit Kronburg - Hamlet's castle! It was pretty cool. A large part of the castle was open to visitors, including the chapel, the various apartments, and ... The dungeon. Three guesses as to what was my favourite part? The castle was strategically located at the entrance to a sound, across the water is Sweden, and at various points in history, both sides of the entrance were Danish-controlled, and the Danish charged a toll for ships to enter into the sound to continue their journey. The fee was finally abolished in 1857. Personally, I think they should bring it back. The afternoon was a trip out to Roskilde to visit the Viking Ship museum, but more importantly, to get on a reproduction Viking ship and head out into ... read more

Having visited Copenhagen for the first time just two years ago I could remember a great deal about the city and my way round. It is a stunning city which fulfils all my desires of living by water even if I struggle to deal with their daft money which has a hole in the middle so coins look like giant polo mints. Getting to Copenhagen was much more glamorous than getting a flight. I took a train at Malmo central station and 15 minutes later, having crossed this amazing bridge, we arrive in Denmark. The train arrives at the central station in Copenhagen about 10 minutes later…now that is what I call a cool border crossing. Finding my hotel for the night took some negotiating seeing as half the area around the central station is dug ... read more
