Denmark is made up of a number of islands in the Baltic Sea, and Jutland, a peninsular north of Germany. Predominantly flat, the highest natural point is only 171 metres above sea level. With a vast coastline, Denmark offers beaches, as well as inland forest areas and vast lakes.

Denmark holds a rich history, from the Vikings to one of the oldest monarchies dating back around 1000 years. In addition to it's traditional towns and cities, Denmark also holds Gothic churches, royal palaces and large manor houses, along with stunning examples of modern architecture. Denmark holds fame for the fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson and every child's favourite toy, Lego.

A quick recap of October 2: The Olympic committee met in Copenhagen on Friday to decide which candidate city would be the host in 2016. The candidates were Tokyo, Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, and Madrid. This is why Obamas and Oprah were in town. The Danes really like Pres. Obama. His arrival was the only thing on the news Friday morning, and my cousins were almost late for school because they wanted to watch his plane land on the television. I never realized that the host city selection process was a big deal before, but I guess when you are hosting [View Full Entry]

First I was busy, then I was unproductive, but now I'm back. But still fairly unproductive. Saturday, September 26, 2009: The climate is a hot issue in Denmark. Unlike the United States, their available resources and land have always been limited (read: no manifest destiny) so the Danes have developed an acute and sophisticated sense of awareness when it comes to reducing, reusing, and recycling, emphasis on the reduce part. There's an island called Samsø that is entirely self sufficient, as far as energy is concerned. Wind power produces nearly 20% of Denmark's energy. So it makes sense th [View Full Entry]

It's been a while since I've written a travel blog, about 4 years ago when I travelled around Australia and New Zealand. Here I am in 2009 in Copenhagen, for a 6 month secondment. Im going to be based in the centre but going to try and get around Denmark and Sweden as much I can at weekends. Left the UK at 1010 this morning via the new-ish Terminal 5 and had a bit of a bumpy descent into Copenhagen. Was picked up at the airport by the relocation persion, which was a blessing. Didn't think I would make it on [View Full Entry]

Picture this. A place where people are all extremely proper, polite and almost distant; to the point of seeming a little cold, but polite nonetheless. It took the city of Boston hours of nonstop scraping, scrubbing and painting to make Brigham Circle look presentable enough to host the president and hoards "dignitaries" for Ted Kennedy's funeral. In Scandinavia, however, Norway especially, crews of men wearing HazMat-esque suits occupy trucks filled with cover-up paint and window cleaning power washers! (I can see my mom's eyes lighting up at the very thought.) Picture a place where alcoho [View Full Entry]

Samsø, a place to be studied in the modern world of renewable energy. The island has a negative carbon footprint which means they produce a surplus of clean energy which they sell back to the Danish mainland at a profit. They employ an elaborate system of wind turbines that are nearly all community owned or even privately owned (as opposed to corporate energy owned), heating stations which provide the heat for the island's homes in a carbon neutral way, and fields of solar energy panels. We started off our trip by taking a regional train to the western coast of Zealand [View Full Entry]

I don't mean to disappoint, but this week has been kind of slow. I know, I know, studying abroad is supposed to be glamorous and full of crazy adventures and mis-communications. But I'm the dull exception to that rule for now. I finally started Danish lessons, twice a week, for three hours each day! I'm studying at Studieskolen, which is downtown. The other students are from Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Austria, England, Italy, and the USA. I can talk about the weather and deliver a message for you if you're late to work. Good stuff. Since class is three hours long [View Full Entry]

Back in Copenhagen this morning; our first Baltic Sea cruise completed. So many memories! St. Petersburg is absolutely amazing and many times it’s hard to express in words what we saw. Russian nobility sure knew how to live the rich and opulent lifestyle. Roxie & I and Judy & Rodger moved all our stuff to our new cabins just a few doors down. We had 4 cabins in a row - Roxie & I, Barb & Gary, Judy & Rodger, Rick and Diana and Joe & Michelle were just across from us on the other side of the ship. We wanted [View Full Entry]

Hello from the marshlands of the Dani Denmark, I am currently in Copenhagen. I arrived yesterday and will be here for another 2 days the 15 hours train ride from Amsterdam was great. I had a single cabin and slept like a log. I arrived here in the morning around 10 00 am. The weather has been great. Cool, sunny, and perfect for walking. I rented an apartment in the north side of the city, in a newly restored neighborhood called Amerika Plads, walking distance to the center of the city, a few minutes to the statue of the little murmaid, [View Full Entry]
