Denmark is made up of a number of islands in the Baltic Sea, and Jutland, a peninsular north of Germany. Predominantly flat, the highest natural point is only 171 metres above sea level. With a vast coastline, Denmark offers beaches, as well as inland forest areas and vast lakes.

Denmark holds a rich history, from the Vikings to one of the oldest monarchies dating back around 1000 years. In addition to it's traditional towns and cities, Denmark also holds Gothic churches, royal palaces and large manor houses, along with stunning examples of modern architecture. Denmark holds fame for the fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson and every child's favourite toy, Lego.

Started with the need for a tree fix. I heard from Linzy, a friend at school, that there was this quaint little town in the north west of Zealand called Tisvildeleje. How on earth you would say this I will never know. A little investigation found that we could get a 24hour regional ticket for 120DKK which was much cheaper than the return fair. So Adrien (Mexico), Denisa (Albania), Kristen (America) and I hopped on the train with our bikes, some food, some wine a blanket each and I brought my tent. We had no plan except to find beach, find [View Full Entry]

SATURDAY 22 AUGUST We crossed into Croatia at around 7am or so, making it three border crossings within 12 hours. Hardly anyone was on the bus by this point - presumably they all got off during the evening somewhere. As I was asleep for most of the trip (at least napping) I guess I had missed most of that. Arrived at Dubrovnik bus station at around 10am and headed to the Hostel International Dubrovnik as again there was no little old lady who I could get private accommodation from. Think I was lucky when I got to the HI as after [View Full Entry]

Chris: Finally met Helle's fiance Michael today, as he had been away in London snce we had arrived. Had an excellent breakfast, and a good chat. Although we were two strangers who had just arrived in his home he was very welcoming and made us feel at home. We then went for a flight in the small prop plane michael uses. Pretty amazing flight over a good portion of Lolland, including their house, Maribo, Rodby and the safari park. Managed to see giraffes and possibly a tiger that just looked like a small moggy from up on high. It was a [View Full Entry]

Today, we are leaving Copenhagen. We had a wonderful time here. The weather was incredible: sunny and warm. Three days ago, we arrived in the middle of the night and were able to sleep at Mette and Magnus´ appartement throughout the whole time. We got their contact via our last couchsurfers. We feel so lucky :) The first day in Copenhagen, we drove by car downtown and walked around the touristy places: the Radhus (town hall and centre) and ran into an open air design exhibition. Very cool, especially for Adam :) Then we went shopping. Its incredible how well dressed [View Full Entry]

Shems: Yesterday Helle had asked us if we would mind going into her school today to help out with a couple of English classes. Naturally we agreed, though this was quite an unusual situation and we were rather nervous. The set-up ended up being working with two high-grade classes. Helle asked us each to work individually with half the group and then swap over half-way during the lesson. We did this differently, Chris did some sort of interesting ad-hoc presentation, utilising the pc and projector in his room. I believe he showed them images of london including the Gherkin. Also imag [View Full Entry]

Last 2 weeks in Denmark, so things are busy. Im cleaning out my room and helping to renovate the youth room. Im working with a guy from Brazil who is a professional painter so it should look really nice once were finished painting the place. There will be a wedding here at Svanholm on Saturday and a number of parties the following week. There will also be a small market at Svanholm for my last weekend and there should be a number of people selling hand made knives, which works out nice since I would like to buy one before I [View Full Entry]

Shems: Vibeke had really urged us to lay in bed the next morning whilst she ran her errands. She had several jobs to do including getting her hair cut. Ok boring yada yada, but seriously at 7.30am? She was back before 9 having also done the shopping, dropped her car off at the garage and arranged our visit to her son's house further north in Lolland. Danes do things very early in the morning, and you can't help but admire this way of life. So after several cups of coffee we drove up to her son Michael's house. Michael is a [View Full Entry]

The apartment

Denmark - pre Bornholm 8/17 - 8/22 So we got our ride into the Center of Odense by Siva, who gave us each 200 kroner, and then went to the Library to try and find a place to stay. It didn’t take long at all actually. After only about 30 minutes of looking on CouchSurfing.com we got a response that we could stay at this wonderful chick Pia’s house. She lived about 4.4 kilometers (about 2 miles) away from where we were and welcomed us at anytime, even on such short notice. So cool! After the Library we headed to get [View Full Entry]
