Denmark is made up of a number of islands in the Baltic Sea, and Jutland, a peninsular north of Germany. Predominantly flat, the highest natural point is only 171 metres above sea level. With a vast coastline, Denmark offers beaches, as well as inland forest areas and vast lakes.

Denmark holds a rich history, from the Vikings to one of the oldest monarchies dating back around 1000 years. In addition to it's traditional towns and cities, Denmark also holds Gothic churches, royal palaces and large manor houses, along with stunning examples of modern architecture. Denmark holds fame for the fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson and every child's favourite toy, Lego.

Day 5, September 5 The forecast for the day, Rain, and it did. We walked to the convenience store and retrieved our bottle deposit. The clerk had to run a price check for the customer in front of me by calling on his cell phone. To check out and pay for 6 items took 5 minutes while I nervously looked out the window hoping our every 10 minute bus did not pass. It didn't. At the stop 8 other people waited, so we walked the extra 2 blocks to the National Museum. After going through 10,000 years of early man, my [View Full Entry]

The usual tea, granola bar, banana breakfast got us out the door by 8:30. Bus 5A picked us up outside the CabInn and the driver told us he would show us where to get off for Assistens Cemetery, present home of Hans Christian Andersen. Kind of a scruffy recent immigrant end of town the cemetery looked like a well kept park. Really interesting stones, usually in family groups, open spaces, trees, and many interesting plants made for a relaxing stroll in a tranquil setting. Signs pointed to HCA and other notable Danes we did not recognize. Bright red squirrels darted [View Full Entry]

Day 3, September 3rd, 2009 We checked out, and the desk clerk asked with feigned sincerity, "How was your stay." I answered, "Except for the people yelling all night in the street, it was fine." She looked shocked, and I'm sure will remedy the situation (that's sarcasm). After a perfect 70 degree clear blue sky day yesterday, this one started wet and wild as we walked to the train station. The automatic ticket machine did not list the flughaffen/airport, so back to the information window I asked where to get a ticket. "The green machine." Silly me, I should have known [View Full Entry]

Day 4, September 4th The next morning the front desk girl told us to take bus 26 to Den Lille Havfru/Tiny Topless Trollop/Fine Fishy Female/The Little Mermaid. The driver responded, "20 minutes" when asked how far we had to travel from the City Hall Square bus stand. We got off the bus at a circle, walked a ways before asking a lady where Lille Miss Havfru sunned herself. She pointed where she thought LMH sat, and at the same time I detected a dozen tour busses - BINGO. With the sun behind her and everyone molesting the poor girl, I got [View Full Entry]

Friday Today was the date of the announcement of the host city of the 2016 Olympics. I headed over to the Rådhuspladsen (The Town Square), which is outside the town hall where the presentations were taking place. A massive stage had been built and as part of the Olympic festival some kids were doing a demonstration of wrestling on it. Also in the square was a BMX track, TV studios and a bar which was going to be selling five drinks (inc soft drinks) for 100kr. That’s right for the bargain price of £2.40 each, you too could be the proud [View Full Entry]

This week has been especially eventful in København. Wednesday I had an exclusive tour of the royal palace Amalienborg with my Copenhagen: History and Current Issues class. Because President Obama was coming, I saw the Royal Tabledresser preparing the luncheon for Obama and the Queen. I toured the citadel with them also. Thursday, my Irish friends and I went to the concerts at Rådhusplasen for the Olympic Decision Event! Friday, they had more concerts with the top Danish pop stars including Medina! The pictures are from that concert. It was awesome to be packed into the square waiting fo [View Full Entry]

Hi Guys, Well it's taken me a while to write this seeing as i've had no internet at home but I thought it should still be done as i've managed to record every other trip i've done so here goes.. Annie and I left Gatwick on Friday night and after a 2 hour flight arrived in Denmark. We got the train to Andorra then two buses out to where we thought our Hostel was. We had a lovely old Danish Man (obviously he'd had a few) sing to us on the bus (much to his wifes embarrassment). When we finally got [View Full Entry]

A quick recap of October 2: The Olympic committee met in Copenhagen on Friday to decide which candidate city would be the host in 2016. The candidates were Tokyo, Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, and Madrid. This is why Obamas and Oprah were in town. The Danes really like Pres. Obama. His arrival was the only thing on the news Friday morning, and my cousins were almost late for school because they wanted to watch his plane land on the television. I never realized that the host city selection process was a big deal before, but I guess when you are hosting [View Full Entry]

First I was busy, then I was unproductive, but now I'm back. But still fairly unproductive. Saturday, September 26, 2009: The climate is a hot issue in Denmark. Unlike the United States, their available resources and land have always been limited (read: no manifest destiny) so the Danes have developed an acute and sophisticated sense of awareness when it comes to reducing, reusing, and recycling, emphasis on the reduce part. There's an island called Samsø that is entirely self sufficient, as far as energy is concerned. Wind power produces nearly 20% of Denmark's energy. So it makes sense th [View Full Entry]
