Started the day with a good breakfast in Plzen. On to the brewary tour. Initially thought to bea waiste of time, but well worth the time and money. Die ondergrondse kelder was die hoogtepunt. Gevolg deur n tasting vanunfiltered bier. Baie lekker gewees.

PART TWO, CAMP (Miřenice, Czech Republic) The next morning my nose piercing fell down the drain, so I walked over to the center (in shorts and a tank top) to buy a new one. On the way back it started to pour, and pour hard. I walked up the huge hill and got back to the pension completely drenched. The owner was nice enough to drive me to the train station. The trains were late because of the rain, which meant I missed my connecting train…I´ve since learned that Czech trains aren´t very reliable. Also, people in the smaller towns REALLY don´t speak very much English, and they don´t announce what the name of ... read more

Tuesday 3rd June 2012 After breakfast and a last stroll around Prague it was time again to load up the bikes and head to the train station. It was nice staying at the apartment for a few days, plenty of room and right in the centre of the old town - great location. We pushed our laden bikes through the crowded cobbed streets until we were able to ride them the rest of the way to the station. I went and purchased tickets for us and the bikes to Cesky Krumlov out next stop. 237.2kc = $11.86 per person with bikes. We had a little time to wait for the platform to appear on the board and hoped that the loading of the bikes onto the train would be a better experience than it was departing ... read more

With a month left in the Czech Republic, I finally got a student of mine to show me some proper Czech parts of their countryside at the weekend. After speaking in our last lesson about my desire to see some more of the Czech Republic before I go back to the UK, he invited my girlfriend and I to the Orlik Reservoir, an hour south of Prague on the River Vltava, a place he seems to have a love for which borders on the sexual. Calling Zdenek a ‘student’ sound ridiculous to me as it conjures up the idea of him being below me in the ladder of life but he is in fact a successful civil engineer with a seemingly perfect Czech life and English which is arguably better than mine. Actually, hanging around with ... read more

Both under 16's and under 18s are playing well here in Pisek and Strakonich at the World Junior Ball Hockey Championships as we head to the medal rounds. Pisek is a lovely little town about 1 hour drive from Prague. It's all cobble-stone streets , a lazy river and church towers, very peaceful and walkable. We've found it to be incredibly safe and never for a second felt any danger. Our hotel is on one of the many squares : HINT: if you are booking a hotel room here in summer, make sure there is air conditioning! (this isn't standard!). From every corner there are bell towers that chime every 15 minutes...not joking! The one outside our room chimes about 40 bells at 7 am, and that's not including the enormous flocks of birds that inhabit ... read more

Cesky Krumlov This town appeared out of the trees as a picturesque storybook place complete with castles and tiny tall white houses with orange tilled roofs. I was already in love before I had walked over the quaint bridge we had to cross to get to our hostel. The hostel actually looked like it belonged to the castle complex, I was pretty excited about our new home for the next 2 nights. It was the last bus tour with Joel, my favourite guide so far and just before he left he told us that the hostel used to be a hospital for lepracy and was actually haunted. As I have already lived in a very old minor's cottage with my own resident ghost this didn't bother me, but some of the others were a little concerned. ... read more

Quite often a hurried day trip for visitors, Cesky Krumlov (the pronunciation is a bit difficult) was a world away from the other cities I had visited to date. My goal was to visit as many places as possible, no matter how big or small! The old town, with Renaissance and baroque buildings, is crowned by a stunning castle and surrounded by the Vltava River. In my lap around the small town that only took me an hour, the sun was shining, autumn leaves were falling and there were no crowds. I was surrounded by green mountains, the calm (mirror image) river and church bells ringing. I felt like I was in a bit of a fantasy land and at this point I fell in love.. with Cesky Krumlov that is! (I hope the last line ... read more
