After Dubrovnik, we took a ferry to the stunning island of Korcula. Absolutely gorgeous. After a few days, we caught a catamaran to the island of Hvar, which is where the rich Croats hang out. Both were gorgeous, check out the snaps...... read more

There isn't much to write about the month of July spent living and camping on the island of Brač because we didn't do much! Our campground was located in the city of Bol and we were right on the beach. The campground was situated in the back of the Dominican Monastery. We swam almost everyday, went to the Bol library and checked out books, we sat on our favorite benches over looking one beach and read tons of books, grilled all of our meals like baked potatoes and grilled cheese on the communal grill in our campground, saw two movies at the outdoor movie theatre, enjoyed an occasional Croatian beer on the beach, went grocery shopping at the Konzum and Kerum, bought fresh bread from our favorite Pekara and made friends with other campers from Slovenia, ... read more

Well guys, for the last 20 something days I have found and enjoyed a steady lifestyle for the first time in a while. I have been working (unofficially of course) for the green lizard hostel where in exchange for around 3 hours of work I get free accom. and free beer (the beer is an amazing local beer too called Karlovacko). More than a fair trade I believe! So a typical day for me over the last few weeks involved getting out of bed at around 10 45 to start work at 10 30........Work involved cleaning up the dorm rooms and bathrooms, pretty light work compared to the farm. Id finish work at around 12 30 and usually have lunch followed by a snooze, then it was time for the beach (or what they call a ... read more

I woke up for breakfast this morning and headed up to the 6th deck and finally got to get my first glimpse of Croatia. It is so stunning. We are surrounded by mountains, islands, and beautiful blue water. I had signed up for a trip through Semester at Sea to have a tour of Old Town Dubrovnik’s city walls. Dubrovnik is a cute little city and is located at the southernmost part of Croatia. The Old Town is actually enclosed in walls like a fortress and is mainly a tourist hotspot, but lots of people do live there (but not for cheap!). During the War for Independence that took place in here in the early 90’s, the city was destroyed by bombs, but it has been completely restored via government funding. There were still some buildings ... read more

We arrived in Venice at around noon the next day. Pulling into the city of Venice by train is pretty cool. You cross a bridge for like 20 minutes that is surrounded by water. We got out of the train station and you walk right out to a main canal and tons beautiful buildings. We headed to the cruise shuttle since we were spending a couple of days in Venice after the cruise. The bus took us to the port and we waited to board our boat called Splendor of the Seas. We walked around the amazing boat of all 11 floors. It has like 5 different bars and 2 pools. We had our first lunch on board, which was a buffet style with lots of different options. The boat set sail at around 3pm and ... read more

Throughout the last few weeks I have been given the opportunity to engage with many croatians, and now that I am safely out of the country I feel I can finally right about it. I am not writing about all croatians, I am however writing about the majority of croatians that I have encountered. These croatians i am speaking about have come across as incredibly angry and bitter people who do not want to have any of us tourists in their country yet desperately need us to be there for them to earn a living (they arent just bitter towards tourists, they also dont hold back on each other). Im not angry, frustrated or annoyed about their attitude, actually, I think it is quite amusing and funny. Their behaviour has actually given me many, many good ... read more

After 3 weeks of being in big cities and urban life, we took a vacation from our vacation and headed to what we are sure is one of the most beautiful islands in the world...... Krk, an island in Croatia. This seemed to be a popular vacation destination for Croatians, Italians and Germans. It was no easy task to get to the island. 10 hours on the train, a 2 mile hike up hill, followed by 2 hours on a bus, with just enough energy and daylight left over to look out the window and see the Adriatic Sea, surrounding by cliffs on all sides. It made the long day of travel well worth it! Our 5 days in Baska (the name of the town that we were in) were very relaxing as island life should ... read more

After leaving Sarajevo we headed up to Zagreb for a few days. We’re trying to make it a bit closer towards the top of Eastern Europe (i.e. Hungary & Poland), before our InterRail tickets run out, which sadly means we'll have to give the Croatian coast a miss this time. The train was an older train. Air-con came in the form of opening the window in the carriage and then opening the window in the carriage hallway, and trying to create a wind tunnel though the train!! I learned that trick on the previous train by watching this old guy! However, this only works when the train is moving, and as we would spend SO MUCH time stopped at stations this knowledge seemed pointless. I share it though with anyone who may find it useful. Woke up suddenly and it was 830!!!! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa i totally missed that alarm at 515am. Didnt even hear it at all. OH well i slept in a bit more and planned to catch the next train at 230. The girl guides had even got up and out of the room. The Swiss guys must have been out hella late because I didnt see them untill the morning passed out of it. Got up and took my time knowing that the train wasnt untill 230. I had to be out of the hostel at 10 though and it was getting pretty close to that now. The guys finally got up and said they were staying another night. I was like ahhh hopefully thats ok I stay here for a bit longer. They were like ohhhhh yah im ... read more

Check-in; Pretty funny, actually. Our little Istok is the tiniest boat on the Adriatic, so people are a bit weary of it as it is. Add to that the fact that we were docked at a broken-down, under-construction part of the port and the pax had to walk across gravel and pipes and glass shards to get there... the closer they came to the boat, the more you could see them start to rue the day they opted for the low-budget option! Two girls took one look at the Istok and immediately ran to the Ika and upgraded. Thankfully, the rest of the group were as chilled-out as you can get, didn't mind showering outside on the deck (because the bathrooms are too small to stand in!) and we had a terrific week. Day 1; Mljet ... read more
