Well my journey began when I left Sebdog's apartment at 11:00pm and I knew it was going to be weird for the first few nights not having him to share a bed with. The train journey I was embarking upon was around 20 hours long and I knew my arse was going to feel it. My first connection was in the wee hours of the following day and then again at around 7 am (when I got onto my final train at hamburg). And there I remained for the following 12 plus hours until finally I arrived at Krakow at around 8pm. I, after battling to find my way out of the train station (in a huge shopping complex), found my hostel quite quickly. After settling in and showering I was ready for bed, but after ... read more

After an early start where we tried to sleep in as Long as possible before making a mad dash for breakfast and somehow getting your belongings organized we were shoved into the bus and driven from Africa to Asia (under the suez canal, through alot of desert and through some beautiful mountains) to the coastal town of Dahab, located an hour or so south of the border to Israel (and the crossing to Jordan) on the Red Sea. After enduring the crazy heat along the Nile it was great to see the coast again. After checking into dahab paradise resort I met my new room mate (An Australian by the name of Matt was my old one) who was English chap who served in Iraq named Rob. Both great guys. After a bit of free time ... read more

After a restless night (thanks to the shoulder) we had breakfast and jumped on the bus and drove north to Luxor, stopping at two temples along the way (Kom Ombo and Edfu). Edfu was the most remarkable seen thus far as it was mostly preserved thanx to the layers upon layers of sand that had covered it for the majority of it's life. All of the temples we have seen have been located right beside the river Nile and have all had sections of the temple that water from the Nile has had a tunnel to, literally passages that disappear into the water. All temples have had nearly every inch of stone covered with hyroglyophics and a few temples have had charred ceilings from the Christians taking refuge in the temples and having fires.  After visiting ... read more

After a somewhat reluctant allnighter (where there was no alcohol involved) I ventured out onto the streets of London at around 3 am and caught two public buses to heathrow airport. Once I was through security etc I had 2 hours to wait until boarding, perfect time for sleeping right? But no, after my poor form earlier in the week I didn't wanna fall into a deep sleep and miss the flight so I desperately tried to stay awake, but failed. Although I woke up at boarding time I was still a long way from my gate. I moved incredibly swiftly to be the last one to board. On arrival at the airport in Cairo, still have asleep, I sorted out a "visa" for under 10 pounds and moved through customs where I was greeted by ... read more

I had the intentions to head into the English countryside to see the real England, but everyone was advising different places so I couldn't make up my mind. Then someone dropped the magical word, surfing. So newquay it was, not for sight seeing but to scratch a massive itch of mine. After booking a bus for 11 am Sunday morning I woke up at midday, clearly I wasn't going to male THAT bus. So I booked an overnight bus for same day at an extra 80bucks. But I was to pay even more for the sleep in. After a pretty rough night on the road I arrived in newquay just before 6 am and in classic English style it was pissing down. I made my way to the hostel and discovered that the place doesn't open ... read more

After an early start in Istanbul on Tuesday I caught a minibus to the city's secondary airport. Arriving at 9:30 for the 2pm flight. We boarded the plane at 8:30pm (yes, 11hours of waiting), arrived at gatwick airport at 10:30 ish and finally got to my hostel at around midnight. We were told during the flight a few of our crew (including the pilot) were ill and they had to fly in another crew from London for the our flight. On the Wednesday, my first day in England, I already knew weeks in advance what I was going to do. I went to the walkabout pub in order to watch the Geelong game from the weekend. It had been a while and I was suffering withdrawal symptoms. During the game and after a few 7 buck ... read more

So the time has come to head down the Turkish coast to see the one place o/s that all patriotic Aussies should visit, Gallipoli. After a sleep in I took the public transport to the main bus station in Istanbul where I caught a bus down to the town canakkale on the Asian coast of turkey. After arriving at the hostel, I met a fellow Australian and a few others who were also planning to visit Anzac cove, etc the following day. We decided that we wanted to do the memorials on our own so that we could take our time and not be rushed. We also mentioned that it would be wierd receiving a tour there from a Turkish guide and after finding a government website that has ample information and descriptions for each site ... read more

After a very interesting night I woke up in a hostel bed in Istanbul, I was feeling somewhat tired, i was still unable to put my full weight on my foot and as I had no sense of direction yet I decided to do a tour to get my bearings and savour the energy I did have. I relictantly chose the double decker bus option, but in the end I cherished the relaxing day. Over the next few days I would explore the city and sights more thoroughly and in the evenings I tried my best to avoid the party scene by checking out a couple of movies. But I could only resist for so long. On a couple of nights we ended up on the top floor bar of the hostel enjoying some beers and ... read more

After seeing enough of Transylvania I decided to bolt on Romania and head down to turkey, and yes Bulgaria is in the path of this journey but I don't really have any interest and haven't heard many good things about it. So I try to catch an overnight train that leaves from Bucharest. I missed it by 20 mins, apparently I was running off an old timetable! This was awesome, being stuck in buchurest trying to find a way to Istanbul and the only people who could tell me anything about an alternative way were thieving taxi drivers that conveniently stated that it left from a station 14km away and they would take me there! Haha! I decided to consult my bible (lonely planet book) and it gave me direction. I found a company that sold ... read more

I have to admit that the only reason I was interested in visiting Transylvania was because of the Dracula movies. But Ill have you know that it wasn't because of Dracula, but rather the castles and the mountainous scenery the movies showed. And although it wasn't quite like what I had imagined, I certainly was not disappointed. The train ride through the Carpathian mountains was jaw-dropping; mountains that were over 2500m high, lush forest all around, following a beautiful stream and every now and then a beautiful castle. After arriving in the city of Brasov, I once again followed a backpacker to their hostel (although I have kinda been travelling with the girl (Jacqui) I followed) and it payed off once again. I quickly ditched my bags and went exploring this touristy but beautiful town that ... read more
