We started our 2 week summer trip island hopping up the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia by flying into Dubrovnik. A picturesque town with an ancient walled citadel encasing countless marble paved streets and vein like alleyways that disappear off the main thoroughfare, called The Stradun. Pleasant people, great weather, rich culture and Italian influenced Adriatic/Meditteranean cuisine. All in all, a great destination. After Dubrovnik, it's off to the Islands of Korcula and Hvar then making land again in Split ("Come on Goran!!") before heading up the coast to fly back from Zadar aka ancient Zara. ... read more

There is an amazingly sweet girl who works at the Green Lizard Hostel named Kristina and today we decided to make the most of her day off work and hire a scooter to fly around the island on. Two scooters would have been ideal but Kristina clearly didn't trust herself driving and the economics worked out better with one scooter also, so we ventured out on one. After a late start to the journey (2pm ish) we hired our scooter down in the main square of Hvar town with the much appreciated help of Kristina's 1st language (being from Zagreb) and I was the driver. The scooter cost 200 KN between the two of us for the day (around 50 bucks) which was a very reasonable price. It did seem a little dodgy compared to how ... read more

At request, here is a blog post :P (Written by SS, SB is doing something more exciting, like sleeping) We are in Zagreb, Croatia. Today was the worst day expected for me, (SS) as my degree results were being puiblished and this hostel has one computer, which is usually occupied. Therefore I got up early to steal it. Obviously there was then the time change, which meant I had to check my results at 10am, not 9am. Anyway, lalala I passed. Therefore now I am Sarah Seaton BSc (Hons) and all that woop. I'm not specifying class on here, loads of people I dont know read this! But I passed, so will (hopefully) be seeing most of you at graduation in a fortnight! (flights pending!) Well as I said we are in Zagreb. My results kinda ... read more

Since the last time that I have written I have flicked the tourist mode switch to the off position and flicked on the "r n r" switch. I have backtracked to the dalmatian island of Hvar in order to enjoy what I couldn't last time I was here. And boy oh boy am I enjoying it. I have settled into the daily routine of beach, nightlife and snoozing with a little food every now and then. Its a good lifestyle but has been taking its toll. I cant elaborate too much on the lifestyle right now, but all will be revealed in the future. ... read more

Day 1; Omis Pax for dinner; 22 (BBQ onboard) Everyone was thoroughly bonded by the time we even reached our first swimming stop, and I knew this would be a great group. When we arrived in Omis, I decided to postpone the fort walk until the next morning in order to bring Monica's group up too (they were late arriving in Omis, and Monica couldn't bring them herself with her hurt leg). So we all went to my favourite coffee shop for a drink, used the Internet, then came back to the boat for bbq and beers (and a Michael Jackson/Farrah Fawcett/Pirate part ). We went out to the bars for a few drinks that night too. Day 2; Makarska Pax for dinner; 22 (at Susvid) Good dinner at Susvid, good time at Marineta bar, then ... read more

First story: Until 1632, when four village parishes were founded, the area of Labin parish was considerably larger than today. The villages are: Skitača, Sv. Lovreč, Sv. Martin and Sv. Nedjelja. Apart from the diminished area of jurisdiction, the Labin parish also had less income. Therefore, laments were directed towards the bishop and Venice mentioning pauperization of the parish of Labin (town close to Rabac , Istria ) by this change, quoting that the parish was “submitted to hunger and destruction”. Pastor Giovanni Battista Toscan Cargnel was one of the pastors moaning the sad destiny of the Labin parish for a very long time. It is interesting to mention his will: he left behind 3 houses, herds of cattle, 8 bags of ducats and other gold coins, 2 parcels of land ... read more

(1) Grape vine was brought to Istria by the old Greek and Phoenicians, favourable climate and soil have greatly contributed that the Histris started growing it and had with time perfected wine. (2) Near Kanfanar there is Dvigrad, remains of an old Istrian town that is consisted of two towns - Moncastello and Parentino. Moncastello is situated more to the north and its citizens abandoned in the 17th century, exhausted by sickness and barbarian attacks, and Parentin was abandoned in the 10th century. (3) Do you know who Valvasor was? That was a man we can thank for numerous graphics and inscriptions on ancient customs and beliefs, as well as the image of medieval Istrian towns.... read more

We spent three rainy days in the safe but noisy harbour of Rab waiting for the storm, which packed winds of 35-40 knots gusting to 60 knots, to pass. From Rab we sailed north to Krk and on to Cres in brisk, cool winds and while these northern towns are interesting they do not have the extensive historical remains that we found on the Dalmation coast in Trogir, Dubrovnik, and Zadar, etc. The weather settled down to the hot Mediterranean weather we have come to expect and we sailed in perfect conditions on our last day from Cres to Pula. We left Thetis, our home for the past month, in Pula and our crew departed with two taking the ferry to Venice and two driving to Slovinia. Having heard good reports about Prague, we decided to ... read more

So after much difficulty and confusion I finally met up with Richard! I was down at the harbour looking for him for 2 mornings...the first day he wasn't there because he accidentally told me the wrong day.....ooooops. *bloody forbes* The 2nd morning I was up at the crack of 9 again to meet him at the harbour....but again, to no avail. He was re routed into Zagreb and had to take a bus down from there....quite the ordeal he went through so I couldnt be too mad at him. When I didnt find him down there I took a ferry to the Island of Brac, from there I bussed to the city of Bol. This island was unreal....just gorgeous. It has that crystal clear water and white pebble beaches that you imagine when you think of ... read more
