After a horrendous night’s sleep (thanks sinuses) I took it easy today. Fortunately there isn’t a whole lot to do in the city of Innsbruck. Most of the allure is in the surrounding mountains - so I didn’t miss out on much. It looks like a great place for outdoor enthusiasts with access to a car. I walked into and around town for a few hours and sat on a bench watching the people. The most exhilarating part was chugging a liter of OJ for some Vitamin C. While I can’t say I really enjoyed Innsbruck (mostly due to my own circumstances) it is a pretty town. The old buildings appear so vivid with their pastel facades. They sharply contrast the surrounding mountains, which almost appear to be a painted backdrop. And the water in the ... read more

Today was another travel day as I went from Lucerne to Innsbruck. Along the way, I stopped in Zurich for a bit. After putting my bags in a locker I took a brief walk around the old town. It was nice but I was short on time and really couldn’t appreciate it. I arrived in Innsbruck this evening and took the bus to the hostel. This one is much more out of the way than the others at which I have been. Even trying to find an open restaurant or grocer nearby proved to be a challenge. Everything closed by 7:00! I finally ended up with a can of soup from a gas station. And I had to pay €0.50 to turn on the stove top. That’s not going to break the bank but come on. ... read more

Let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start. I decided to catch the afternoon train from Ljubljana to Salzburg last Friday. However, the train was more than one hour late, so this afternoon train became an evening train. While I was waiting for this train, I was stung by a wasp on the top of my ring finger. I was eating an apple at the time. The sting was quite painful at the time, but the pain changed to a discomfort, and by the evening almost all traces of the sting were gone. We finally got onto the train, and it moved slowly, and stopped a few times. A couple of hours later, we crossed the border into Austria and pulled into the town of Villach. The conductor said that the train ... read more

... read more

Pariin otteeseen osui raju ukkoskuuro. Tiet muuttuivat joiksi ja näkyvyys häipyi. "Ohhoh", kommentoi Henkka. Erilaisten Alb-seutujen kautta ajeltiin Allgäuhun, katsomaan niitä lehmiä, jot... read more

Well I was pleasantly surprised to find Innsbruck quite a large place and our accomodation 500m straight out of the train station. Right next to the famous arch and on the edges of the "Old town" Loved it..... Room was fair and breakfast was included. It was about 7pm and we asked reception about internet but the girl told us to go down to a Uni club that had a faster connection which was free. We were a bit out of our league............ lots of alternative younger & middle age people, emo's, dreadlocked hair, hippy people............ ha ha The young waitress was most helpful with the menu so we settled in with a few beers and pizza. Good value at 28 Euro woo hoo bargain with free internet too! She even told us where to go ... read more

If you've seen the movie Dumb and Dumber, then you might recognize the quote in the title of this blog entry from when he (Jim Carrey's character) talks to an AUSTRIAN girl and erroneously says a stereotypical Australian phrase. Dates of travel: April 15th-17th We drove from Milan to Austria and arrived at the Hilton Innsbruck at around 1am and almost immediately went to bed because the drive was long and exhausting. It would have been really cool to make that drive during the day because we drove right through the mountains and went through dozens of mountain passes, including the famous Brenner Pass. The view when we woke up the next morning and looked out of the hotel room window was amazing. The surrounding scenery that was pitch black when we arrived the night before ... read more

From Munich, I took the train to Innsbruck Austria .. right in the heart of the alps. I was surrounded by snow covered mountains, but you would never know it because it was short sleeve weather. It was rather warm. It was the end of snow season, and the summer season hadnt quite kicked in ... and it was a Easter Weekend .... so the town was rather dead. Because of this I was able to finagle a dirt cheap hotel room at a hotel that was way nicer than I had any business staying in for only a fraction of the price it typically costs. Given that it was a ghost town, I really didnt do much ... other than take advantage of the huge bed and quiet room to catch up on some rest, ... read more

We woke up early on Tuesday and boarded a bus for the 3 hour drive to Innsbruck. The ride went pretty fast and there was plenty of neat things to see along the way. Upon arriving in Innsbruck, we ended up taking a brief bus tour of the city seeing the bell foundry, landhaus, as well as some other interesting stores. We ended up at Basilica Church where we entered and heard the history of the church. The use of color and gold was prominent throughout the church. It also was colder inside than it was outside. After hearing all about it we snapped some pictures in front of it as well as the cemetery adjacent to it and a nice shot of the Olympic ski jump across the way on the mountain top. We then ... read more
