Geo: 47.2627, 11.3947 After purchasing the Innsbruck Card, we caught a tram into the city centre. First stop was to catch the Funicular Cable Car up Seegrube Mountain. We thought this was high up until we then caught the Patscherkofelbahnen Cable Car a further 1,000 metres up the mountain. Hang Gliders were jumping off a steep incline at the lookout almost in a procession. We then caught a further Cable Car up to the top of the mountain, some 2,500 metres above the city of Innsbruck. No wonder there was snow all around. It was unexpectedly warm though at the top today, being around 25 degrees. After coming down the mountain, we walked through the Old City and visited the Hopkirche. This Church contains the most renowned cenotaph in the western world, being the tomb of ... read more

Geo: 47.2627, 11.3947 We left Melk today bound for Innsbruck (Austria), roughly a four and a half hour drive. On the way we called in to see Mauthausen Concentration Camp, just outside of Linz. Mauthausen was classified as a so-called "category three camp". This was the fiercest category of concentration camp, and for the prisoners it meant "Rûckkehr unerwünscht" (return not desired) and "Vernichtung durch arbeit" (extermination by work). Mauthausen was chosen as a site for a slave labour camp because of the nearby granite quarry, and due to its proximity to Linz. The granite mined in the quarries had previously been used to pave the streets of Vienna, but the Nazi authorities envisioned a complete reconstruction of major German towns in accordance with the plans of Albert Speer and other architects of Nazi architecture, for ... read more

I went hiking in the alps!! Innsbruck was amazing. It was kind of like estes park but in the alps so in a way better, just because it wasnt differrent. The Alps are beautiful in different ways then the Rockies. For one, everything is green because its not dry like it is in Colorado. They were smaller too, at leats in Austria. I didnt get to fully enjoy the Alps because my cold had gotten a lot worse by then. BUt i still made it a point to go hiking, although if you define hiking the way Demitri Martin defines hiking, which he defines it as walking where its ok to pee, then it wasnt hiking. I was still kinda in the city but on the outskirts of it, so there were a lot of people ... read more

June 8 to 11 The Gasthof Halle was a very convenient, comfortable, friendly and clean hotel. It was one of the better hotels I had stayed in during the holiday. But who can turn down the offer of a friend's couch, even if it means rolling up the bed sheets every morning. My friend Mirjam, whom I had met in Malaga, Spain some time ago, made me this irresistible offer. I was able to experience living in a compact centrally located apartment in Innsbruck a stone's throw away from the Old Town with the Hofburg (castle), the rail station and varied shopping opportunities from small family shops where one was served from behind a counter to glitzy malls. Innsbruck is surrounded by snow capped mountains and lies along the banks of the River Inn. The best ... read more

Innsbruck has been a justifiably popular destination for many years but for me it will always be synonomous with the 1976 Winter Olympics. If anyone from my generation knows anything about Austria, it is probably the men's downhill gold medalist - local icon Franz Klammer. Accommodation and Food Stayed 3 nights at Pension Paula conveniently located very close to the start of the hike to Hungersburg and above. My own super quiet room, share bathroom, WiFi, and breakfast with the best coffee you'll find in Austria was 33€. The place is busy with guests from all over and the hosts are terrific. First meal was at an Indian restaurant buffet at Sahib without asking the price prior. Food was good and I did in fact pig out for sure but the damage was an unconscionable 15€. ... read more

You would think that after going 36 hours without sleep, except for a half hour snooze during Shakespeare on the plane, that I would've had a long night's rest once I climbed into bed. Yet I was up most of the night coughing my brains out. I assume I was allergic to the feather bed or some alien German mould in our room. I kept my poor mother awake as well. But when breakfast time rolled around I actually felt pretty refreshed. The planned itinerary for today was the cause for some concern before we left home. We would be driving through the Alps and a couple of high mountain passes on our way to and from Innsbruck. Innsbruck is only 50 miles from Innsbruck but it is over roads prone to receiving some heavy snow ... read more

We went downhill skiing today at Axamer Lizum. I had a very satisfying 4 runs (5 if you count the t-bar run). It took an entire run for me to figure out what I was doing, but by the end of the day I had a lot more confidence. The mountains are incredible! I did my last run looking at a limestone mountain range glowing in the setting sun! Sorry no pictures today-the playbooks had a quiet day in our room. Off to bed, we're going to push our muscles tomorrow and go skiing at Patscher Kofel. The ski area has over 1000m of vertical for a single run. Guten Abend!... read more

I'm sending all of you a message from the future... welcome to 2012! Happy New Year! We brought in the new year beside the Inn river watching PHENOMENAL fireworks to a waltz, 'nothing else matters', a german song and '21 guns'. We have a few videos to show. Enjoy the rest of 2011!... read more

We arrived in Innsbruck last night. Unfortunately the internet coverage isn't great, so no videos for awhile. We were a bit nervous coming to Innsbruck as the weather forecast called for rain today, however since we got on the train at 4pm last night it hasn't stopped snowing! There's been something like 7-10" in the last day. The trees have big blobs of snow on their branches. It looks like a winter wonderland! We explored the altstadt (old city) today stopping at the market hall and a few coffeeshops to warm up and shake the snow off. The coffees, hot chocolate and apple strudal were great, but my favourite is the delicious soup everywhere. Food is one of the three things Austrians must really enjoy based on the stores we came across. The other 2 are ... read more

Today was supposed to be a comfortable drive from Heidelberg through spectacular mountains which surround Fern Pass, our route to the Austrian city of Innsbruck. All started well and we were making good time until we hit traffic which meant we did half the journey at a crawl – making it another long day in the coach. THE TRIP We drove south into the Bavarian Alps to see King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein Castle, one of the most spectacular in Europe and to have some lunch. I had goulash and Jeanette apple strudel – sampling local fare! A bit further along we also stopped to see Germany’s highest mountain Zugspitze. In general the views from the road were stunning, with huge mountains overlooking the green valley’s below. The valleys were dotted with small villages. Farming is still carried ... read more
