We are new to travelling and new to blogging. The kids are off our hands and the mortgage is under control so we're celebrating doing the hard yards - and surviving them by heading off on our Big OE (about 30 years late)! We leave Wellington New Zealand on 23 July and will spend 3 months exploring UK/Europe,a mixture of organised tours and independent travel.

ROME TO HOME Today was the long haul from Rome to Auckland via Singapore. We booked a 9am shuttle to the Airport for our 12 noon flight. The airport was extremely busy but we found our Singapore Airline check in with relative ease and started the ordeal of being ‘processed’ through the system. Despite the number of people things ran smoothly and efficiently and it wasn’t long before we were through the official part and into the departure area. We took the inter terminal train to Terminal 3 where we were scheduled to depart from. We had something to eat and grabbed a couple of books for the flight and before we knew it we were winging our way on the 12.5 hour flight to Singapore. We travelled Singapore Airlines both ways and for 3 of ... read more

Today was the last full day of our European Tour. We left Siena and headed to Rome for an overnight stay out near the airport to simplify things for tomorrow. If only it was that simple! SIENA Firstly though a big 'thumbs up' for Siena. It ended up as part of our itinerary almost by accident. Originally we were going to spend 8 or 9 days in Cinque Terre to unwind before we went home, however our Travel Agent who had been to Cinque Terre thought 5 nights would be plenty and we should spend a few days elsewhere. He suggested Florence, but because we had covered that with our tour he got out a map and had a look at what was nearby. He suggested Siena, probably because it was the next biggest name on ... read more

Today was our last in Siena and our 3 month epic adventure is drawing to a close. Tomorrow we head to Rome and have an overnight stay before flying out for Singapore/New Zealand at midday on Friday. SIENA SHOPPING We had no firm plans for the day, we were just going to have a look around the central area of Siena and do a bit of last minute shopping. Whatever thoughts we might have had went out the window as soon as we walked out of the Hotel. As we left the building right outside the Hotel and extending over the surrounding area was a massive market –mainly new season winter clothing-but lots of other stuff as well. There was no chance of me getting Jeanette past it so we spent an hour or so battling ... read more

DONATELLA’S TUSCAN WINE TOUR We spent most of today in rural Tuscany with a company called Wine Tour in Tuscany owned and operated by Donatella. She picked us up in her minivan from outside our Hotel at 8.45am. There were 5 other people in our group, a couple in their 30ths from Seattle in the States and another American couple in their mid 20’s and a friend of theirs who was older. The Tour was possibly an odd choice for us because we have no real interest in wine, but reading Donatella’s website and reading the Trip Advisor reviews we were confident the tour would give us the opportunity to experience the ‘real’ Tuscany – and so it proved! GOING ORGANIC We headed south towards the heart of Brunello wine country – Brunello is one of ... read more

Today we left Monterosso and headed to Siena for our final stopover before heading home. GIARDINO INCANTATO We will miss our special B&B Giardino Incantato; staying in such quality accommodation in a really special location in the centre of a historic town has been one of the highlights of our trip. When we went to see our housekeeper yesterday to say we wouldn’t need breakfast in the morning as we would be leaving early, she asked what time we were going and said it was no problem they would do an early breakfast or us. It is typical of the level of service we have received. The accommodation has been fantastic, the people lovely and extremely accommodating and they show incredible attention to detail. An example of this was when we came back to base one ... read more

ALL BLACKS V AUSSIES – RUGBY WORLD CUP Another slightly chilly start to the day but the glorious blue sky promised another cracking day to come. After breakfast we headed down to the Fast Dal 1989 Bar Monterosso to confirm the All Black v Australia Rugby World Cup quarter final would be screened live – it was! I had my All Black Jersey to wear and Jeanette wore the NZ Football away top (Black with a white fern). We also had our full size New Zealand flag so we were well prepared. It was about an hour before kickoff and there was already one group of New Zealanders there – four friends who live in London and took advantage of some cheap flights to spend a few days in the area. By the time kickoff arrived ... read more

It was a bit colder this morning, but still warm enough (just) to have our breakfast in the garden. We discussed the best way to get from Monterosso to Siena - we leave for siena in a couple of days - with Fausto (our host at Giardino Incantato), he suggested rail was the most effective and offered to work out the best schedule with the least changes for us. A nice gesture which we very much appreciated, the level of service since we arrived has been outstanding. WALES V FRANCE WORLD CUP RUGBY Originally we were going to head off early to see the last two towns in Cinque Terre (Manarola and Riomaggiore). However last night we found a Pub that was screening the Wales v France Rugby World Cup semi final live – 10am our ... read more

'Today started with another breakfast in the enchanted garden, we made it for 9am to give us an extra half hour to sleep in. It really is a great way to start the day. CINQUE TERRE ON FOOT – THE BLUE TRAIL Afterwards we wandered down to the train station to buy our Cinque Terre Card. The card gives you access to the walking tracks between the five villages. We bought a 2 day pass; there is the option of including the local train which we also took. It means we can walk one way and train back which we figured meant we would be able to go slower and enjoy the experience more. That organised we headed back through the Old Town to the start of the track. We decided to take the Blue Track ... read more

BREAKFAST After a very good night’s sleep we started our day with breakfast in Giardino Incantato's lovely Ligurian garden. It is situated just across the alley from the B&B and the seating is set amongst Lemon and other Mediterranean trees and flowers. The weather was nice and mild so it was a great spot enjoy a quiet breakfast. In Italy they don’t typically have cooked breakfasts, I had a selection of ham, cheeses and breads, Jeanette had fruit, yogurt and cereal. The food was fresh, plentiful and delicious. ANGELO’S BOAT TRIP We were scheduled to take a boat cruise to Portovenere at 11.30pm so we had a wander around the centre of town and the weekly market which had lots of interesting bits and pieces (for Jeanette especially). It was a glorious day so we were ... read more

Today was a very interesting one to say the least, the shackles had been released (in the nicest possible way) from the strict routine required to get 38 people in a coach around 14 countries of Europe in 33 days, and we were on our own! GENOA We still needed our wits about us though as we had to report at Gatwick for our flight to Genoa Italy by 8.30pm (flight left 10.30am). In the end the decision to stay out by Gatwick was a good one as we could get organised, have breakfast and only need to leave the Hotel at around 8ish, although in the end we were a bit before that. Initially everything went smoothly. We checked in, our suitcases only weighed around 17kg each (allowance is 23kg) so questionable if we needed ... read more
